James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery: Northfield, MN

After Kim went to work, I loaded Buddy into the car and headed down to Northfield to hang out with Josh and Penny for the day. Josh was a bit hungry and without anything in the house told me that we were going to go out instead. Josh, being Josh, didn’t even think that it was Easter Sunday and didn’t realize that 99% of businesses would be closed today.

After driving past Hogan Brothers and J. Grundy’s Rueb ‘n’ Stein we headed out towards Kurry Kabab on MN-3 just outside of Northfield’s downtown. Finding that Kurry Kabab was also closed, we noticed that a little coffeehouse/bistro was indeed open and Josh mentioned that he had eaten at a previously related location downtown before. So we stopped into the James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery which has recently come under new local ownership with a husband and wife team at the helm. James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery is a warm and inviting space decorated similarly to a small Panera with comfortable overstuffed seating in front of a small fireplace, plenty of magazines in a wooden rack, and a bunch of tables with recycled coffee bean bags under glass for you to sit down and whip out your laptop to suck up some free wifi.

Josh already knew what he wanted to have but I took a moment to look over the chalkboard menu and soon switched to a smaller printed handbill sized one tacked to the back of the front counter (you can check it out in PDF here). I was impressed with several of the options especially the signature sandwiches on 7-grain bread (arrr num num) but in the end I chose a panini as that’s what Josh suggested.

After mulling over all of the panini options, I ordered “The Hot Chick” (I later joked, “I ate a hot chick!”) which is listed as having seasoned chicken, grilled zucchini, red onion, tomato, provolone and bistro sauce for $7.49 which comes with chips and pickle. I don’t know if it was the seasoning or the bistro sauce but this sandwich had a nice little spice behind it. I wanted to ask the owners what the bistro sauce was but for now it will have to remain a mystery however it might have been a chipotle mayo. Josh ordered their “Goodfella” which has pepperoni, salami, ham, roasted red pepper, tomato, lettuce, provolone cheese, and their bistro sauce on cibatta bread. Josh, being the vegetable hater he is, decided to go sans red pepper which, to me, ruined the entire artistic expression that is the “Goodfella”. It would have just added the right amount of red to make it feel like Tommy DeVito and Henry Hill were eating along with you.

“The Hot Chick” was tasty, quite tasty actually. Now, I haven’t ever had a panini on cibatta bread, well, at least not as thick as this one was, and am used to it being more like a grilled cheese than a warm sandwich like this was but I enjoyed it. I had originally planned on only eating half and saving the other half, like Josh later chose to do, but ended up scarfing the entire thing down in one shot. Mmmm. In addition to Josh’s “Goodfella”, he also ordered a mocha which looked pretty damn good — I miss caffeine :(

After finishing lunch, we spent some time chatting with the owners about their new venture, other local restaurants (including The Ole Cafe which is replacing the Ole Store which has apparently been closed for several years — you can read more on Locally Grown here), and even restaurants all the way up this way including the now defunct Copper Bleu and the brand-new Panino Brothers.

Even though James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery is located outside of Northfield’s downtown area, it is definitely a nice stop if you’re in Northfield and especially if you’re traveling on MN-3 and are looking for a locally owned restaurant for a place to refuel or get a little pick-me-up with a caffeinated jolt.

Minnesota RollerGirls Spring Cleanup: St Paul, MN

Tonight headed out to the Minnesota RollerGirls Spring Cleanup (the second to last bout of the season) and I spent 1.5 hours listening to the people behind us in line voice their concerns, very low — Minnesota nice style, about the line jumpers. I wish that they would have joined with me in verbally abusing those that jumped line directly in front of us. I also wish those that I was complaining about had at least acknowledged their wrongs, apologized and moved to the end of the line instead of allowing their friends to try and make lame excuses for them (no, holding a place in line for your friends is NOT ok). When I told them they were jerks, I meant it. When their ignorant friends told me I was a jerk all I could do was smirk. Please note, Kevin and family were third in line and we did not hop in with them and honestly, everyone else should follow our lead and use some common decency.

As usual, we were waiting in line early to score one of the famed 2008 Minnesota RollerGirls tees. The t-shirts tonight were very, very, very, very cool (did someone that submits Threadless artwork come up with these?) Unfortunately, because of the content, I won’t be wearing this one to work. I have a feeling that bloody legs with roller skates still attached and bunnies with blood dripping from its jaws wouldn’t fly. But, I will happily wear it elsewhere and just smile when I get the weird looks :) I was really hoping to get an orange shirt (they had multiple pastel colors) but I ended up with a lime green one instead. Kim was thrilled to get her’s in pink.

After we picked up our shirts, we headed deeper into the Roy Wilkins and found that Kevin and his wife were sitting in our usual spots as they were again available! We were thrilled! I actually did a little dance because I thought was damn cool. After we sat down, Kevin’s wife noticed that the reserved seating I complained about last week was moved to the ends of the seating areas and the back rows instead of where they were located during the Irish Eyes Are Shining bout. I have no idea if it was due to airing my concerns or if it was strictly coincidental, but it was very nice and we appreciated the change. We also noticed that everyone was a little closer to the action with our floor seats almost butting up to the trackside spots. We also noted that it appeared that the penalty box was shifted a bit to accommodate more seating behind it. It’s obvious that someone took the time to revamp the seating to ensure everyone was just that much closer to the action and the vibe from the crowd tonight showed that it did the trick!

The first match up was the Bombshells vs the Dagger Dolls. Straight out of the gate this bout was *physical* and *dirty* although any time Buffy the Vampire Skater is out on the track things are bound to get filthy. Buffy was just downright nasty tonight going so far as to blatantly trip other girls and then watch as they were booted for falling and mowing her down. I love how she just smiles when her evil little plans come together at the expense of the fairly blind referees. Later in the match, during a Dagger Dolls timeout, Wetspot skates out with a huge t-shirt cannon and shoots it clear across the venue and halfway up into the upper deck to the loud cheers and general excitement of the entire crowd. Definitely cool. I don’t know where they picked up this cannon but it was a pretty cool addition tonight.

I won’t bore you with any more play by plays for the remainder of the bout but overall it was more physical with tons more fights, an even mix of scoring and defensive plays and it definitely got the crowd really going for what seemed like the first time all season.

As a side note, it was announced that Jawbreaker will be competing as part of the National Rollergirls all-star team in San Diego as a captain. A special congrats go out to her for her accomplishment! Kudos go out to all of the rollergirls and the announcers tonight. Definitely a step above and a welcome change that has me excited for the championship bout.

Two quick videos for you. The first is a classic all-star match up between Jawbreaker and Rebel Stella. While Jawbreaker ends up cleaning up during the jam, it still shows just how powerful both of these two skaters are. Make sure to check out when Jawbreaker narrowly misses an attempted hit. While I missed videoing her stepping over another skater while avoiding a serious hit later, this one will have to do:

This video is from the final seconds of the Garda Belts vs Atomic Bombshells bout when all hell breaks loose, twice. This will give you just an inkling of how dirty the entire night was:

Apple Valley to Allow Further Degradation of Central Village Plan?

The original intent of the Apple Valley Central Village, at least according to the comprehensive plan, was that the area would be a pedestrian-oriented development with plenty of mixed use development plots. However it would seem that Apple Valley’s Planning Commission, in its infinite wisdom and desire to become Woodbury, might allow changes to have this area come to resemble something more similar to what’s already available in the real downtown at Cedar/42.

According to a public notice, the Apple Valley Planning Commission is considering altering the original zoning plan to accommodate the desire of a commercial property owner (Legacy Holdings - AVN, LLC) to build more straight commercial properties rather than what is currently permitted which is mixed use residential/commercial. The parcel in question is located at the NE corner of Galaxie and 153rd (across from Two Guys From Italy, Luxury Sweets, Kami Japanese Steakhouse and the former location of Jan’s Brown Bag Deli). While nothing has been determined yet, I would hope that all residents, especially those living in the townhomes nearby as well as those living in the apartments just down the street, join up and voice their concern about the possibility of altering the look and feel of this area to make it very much the same as we already have spread across the rest of Apple Valley. How would you feel if the home you just purchased, with plans to look out over a “old-fashioned downtown” only to find out that you are instead on the outskirts of more chain-owned coffee shops, greasy smoke spewing restaurants and high-turnover commercial locations?

If you’re interested in attending the Planning Commission’s hearing about altering this zoning ordnance, please head out to the Apple Valley Municipal Center on April 2nd at 7PM.

Dakota County Glitch Caused Unreasonable Police Response Times

A known issue, which began in late February, created serious issues for 911 callers between February 23rd and March 17th. One such issue, according to this article over at ThisWeek, was that the Apple Valley Police Department took over 30 minutes to respond to a call from a terrified woman who saw someone outside her front door. The Apple Valley Police did eventually respond, and later claimed that they did so as soon as they were alerted by the dispatcher.

While Dakota County was attempting to fix the issue, they did nothing to alert the public and aside from the issue mentioned above, it also caused some 911 callers to be disconnected without reaching a 911 operator. Dakota County did attempt to put procedures in place to help mitigate the issues but I wonder if the recent rise in homicides, stabbings and other violent crimes in the South Metro might have been avoided if this problem was handled differently.

Knowing that criminals might take advantage of slower police response due to the issues being experienced, do you believe that the Dakota County Communication Center acted properly by choosing security through obscurity rather than full public disclosure?

You’re Worthless, but…

From the Inver Grove Heights Police Reports on the Pioneer Press:

Harassment: A woman in the 3300 block of 78th Street East reported March 5 that she had broken up with a man and he was sending her harassing text messages. The messages included remarks about how she was worthless and that he wanted to be with her forever. Police called the man, but he would not provide his full name.
