After Kim went to work, I loaded Buddy into the car and headed down to Northfield to hang out with Josh and Penny for the day. Josh was a bit hungry and without anything in the house told me that we were going to go out instead. Josh, being Josh, didn’t even think that it was Easter Sunday and didn’t realize that 99% of businesses would be closed today.
After driving past Hogan Brothers and J. Grundy’s Rueb ‘n’ Stein we headed out towards Kurry Kabab on MN-3 just outside of Northfield’s downtown. Finding that Kurry Kabab was also closed, we noticed that a little coffeehouse/bistro was indeed open and Josh mentioned that he had eaten at a previously related location downtown before. So we stopped into the James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery which has recently come under new local ownership with a husband and wife team at the helm. James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery is a warm and inviting space decorated similarly to a small Panera with comfortable overstuffed seating in front of a small fireplace, plenty of magazines in a wooden rack, and a bunch of tables with recycled coffee bean bags under glass for you to sit down and whip out your laptop to suck up some free wifi.
Josh already knew what he wanted to have but I took a moment to look over the chalkboard menu and soon switched to a smaller printed handbill sized one tacked to the back of the front counter (you can check it out in PDF here). I was impressed with several of the options especially the signature sandwiches on 7-grain bread (arrr num num) but in the end I chose a panini as that’s what Josh suggested.
After mulling over all of the panini options, I ordered “The Hot Chick” (I later joked, “I ate a hot chick!”) which is listed as having seasoned chicken, grilled zucchini, red onion, tomato, provolone and bistro sauce for $7.49 which comes with chips and pickle. I don’t know if it was the seasoning or the bistro sauce but this sandwich had a nice little spice behind it. I wanted to ask the owners what the bistro sauce was but for now it will have to remain a mystery however it might have been a chipotle mayo. Josh ordered their “Goodfella” which has pepperoni, salami, ham, roasted red pepper, tomato, lettuce, provolone cheese, and their bistro sauce on cibatta bread. Josh, being the vegetable hater he is, decided to go sans red pepper which, to me, ruined the entire artistic expression that is the “Goodfella”. It would have just added the right amount of red to make it feel like Tommy DeVito and Henry Hill were eating along with you.
“The Hot Chick” was tasty, quite tasty actually. Now, I haven’t ever had a panini on cibatta bread, well, at least not as thick as this one was, and am used to it being more like a grilled cheese than a warm sandwich like this was but I enjoyed it. I had originally planned on only eating half and saving the other half, like Josh later chose to do, but ended up scarfing the entire thing down in one shot. Mmmm. In addition to Josh’s “Goodfella”, he also ordered a mocha which looked pretty damn good — I miss caffeine :(
After finishing lunch, we spent some time chatting with the owners about their new venture, other local restaurants (including The Ole Cafe which is replacing the Ole Store which has apparently been closed for several years — you can read more on Locally Grown here), and even restaurants all the way up this way including the now defunct Copper Bleu and the brand-new Panino Brothers.
Even though James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery is located outside of Northfield’s downtown area, it is definitely a nice stop if you’re in Northfield and especially if you’re traveling on MN-3 and are looking for a locally owned restaurant for a place to refuel or get a little pick-me-up with a caffeinated jolt.
