Last week’s poll asked if you were rocking the HDTVs or still stuck with the old school CRTs. While we’re still using a CRT TV, we’re in the market for a new one. I figured a lot of people had already upgraded but I was surprised at just how few people were still in the dark ages like we are. Lots of great pointers on where to find a new and inexpensive HDTV outside of Black Friday deals and we’ll be looking at all of those, thanks!
This week’s poll comes after I viewed the above video a few days ago. While hilarious, a regular YouTube occurrence when people video loved ones coming out of anestesia, my reactions are much more miserable and violent. I have never reacted well to the drug on the few occasions I’ve had it. I wake up sick to my stomach (the first time I had it I went home with a bucket and puked for what felt like days), more miserable than usual, and usually screaming obscenities. The last time I went under for my wisdom teeth extraction, I woke up yelling and screaming so violently that the staff didn’t know what to do with me. I just kept telling them, “I told you I didn’t react well to the drug; you were warned.”
So what about you? Have you ever been put under anestesia? If so, when you come around are you funny, sick, miserable or something else? Has anyone ever recorded you while you were coming out of it? Did you remember anything right after? Have you done anything to make the experience better? Whatever you have to say about this one, go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I get horribly sick everytime. We are talking vomiting for days. I have had several surgeries and I always tell them beforehand that I get sick and they tell me not to worry they will give me something else to help with nausea or that this anethesiologist is the best and will only admister as much as I need to keep me asleep. I still have puked everytime, usually once I get home. But once, I threw up all over the nurse in the recovery room. I felt bad, but could only think, “I told you so”.

I do okay with general anesthesia. Nothing funny or violent and not too sick. Which is amazing since almost all medication makes me sick. All opiates make me violently ill. I had a numb spot the size of my hand for over six months on my leg where I had morphine injected. I can’t take more than one Tylenol without puking. Most vitamins and some supplements also make me puke. Cold medicine makes me sick too, and makes me feel like I’m on speed and my hair is standing on end. The only drugs I’ve been able to take regularly without getting sick are birth control pills, Novocaine and low dose chewable vitamins.

Historically my wife does poorly with anesthesia. She will be sick for at least the day and may take up to 2 days to recover. The last surgery she had where she had General was on her knee, and the anesthesiologist listed to her stories and said he would add something to try and counteract that. After that surgery she seemed to have no effects from the anesthesia. Not sure what they did.
I broke my collar bone when I was 8 or so. Had stitches near my eye due to a dog bite, and then stitches for my finger when I put my hand through a headlight. I had a tooth pulled, and a cap installed. all just local. Never been put under to find out how I’d handle it. (knocking on wood)

Too funny. I want to see the video of you being violent, Bill.
I took my partner Lynnette for wisdom tooth extraction last year. She was fine immediately afterwards, and even wanted to drive (I didn’t let her). She had a little trouble standing up straight (“the ground is all crookedy”) but insisted that we stop at the pharmacy, where she had a very reasonable conversation with the pharmacist, and then at the grocery store because she wanted pudding. Once we got home she dozed briefly, and was ready to go back to work after a few hours. Then she said “Oh, but we should go to the pharmacy and get my prescriptions filled.” When I explained that we’d already gone, she didn’t believe me. She didn’t remember a thing from our whole long trip home.

My youngest son was hysterically funny. Told me this stuff was ” the bomb” ( pointing to his IV). He wanted to be photographed, kept chatting (despite his mouth being full of gauze and was very agreeable to everything I told him. I cry and don’t feel well.

I’ve had general and I’ve had ‘twilight sleep’. The general was for my gallbladder surgery. In by 9, out by noon, and puking as my mom drove over the High Bridge on the way home from St. Joe’s (with my dad encouraging me from the back seat, LOL). First ‘twilight sleep’ was in 2002 for knee surgery. My surgeon told my parents afterward that I chattered nonstop the whole time, asked a lot of questions and tried to get closer to see the video screen (arthroscopic surgery) and then asked for my glasses because I couldn’t see well enough. I did not remember a thing. Had it again in 2007 (same knee), but I think he had them put me under further that time LOL…

I had general twice when I had my appendix out and then again when I had to have that surgery revised. The first experience left me feeling mildly ill (my mom said my skin was grey, though) and I couldn’t pee for hours. I called my supervisor while I was still kind of out of it to let them know I’d be out for a few weeks, apparently. The second time, the surgeon started me on an epidural so they didn’t have to use so much general. MUCH better experience (although I still couldn’t pee). Earlier this summer, I had to have an Upper GI and got the twilight (Fentanyl and a boatload of IV Valium) and that was a nice experience (remembered exactly nothing and chattered like an idiot for hours later. When I had to have it redone a few months later, the experience wasn’t as awesome (he went lighter on the Valium and heavier on the Fentanyl) and my BP was kind of low for a little while and I felt rotten for the rest of the day. The lesson on that one is Valium is your friend but there is no way to ask for it without sounding like a drug seeker to your doc.
On a tangent, docs are more likely to prescribe someone Oxycontin or Vicodin than benzos, even though narcs are way worse in my opinion and don’t do a great job of controlling some types of pain. Neurontin is another scary one, too.
