Less than an hour ago an e-mail came to me from a reader who had it on good information that the Apple Valley Liquor Store #3 was burgled sometime on Monday. I immediately remembered noticing a Google search come through to the site which was looking for something about Apple Valley’s liquor store being robbed but I didn’t think much of it. After a quick look, it appears that one other person has also searched for information on it as well. Interesting.
Well, based on the e-mail tip, I called the Apple Valley Police Department and was eventually transferred to the Chief of Police who said that while they don’t comment on open investigations, it was a burglary which occurred at about 5:30 AM on Monday February 2nd. The back door was broken into and the liquor store’s safe was removed. The alarm was activated and the police did respond but by the time they arrived the burglars and the safe were long gone.
If you have any information about this, I suggest contacting the Apple Valley Police Department at 952-953-2700.

Unofficially the safe weighed about 600 lbs and there are rumors it may have been an inside job due to the fact that they knew exactly where the safe was and how to get it out easily.

Question: How many 5th graders does it take to carry a 600 lb safe?

More from the Apple Valley Thusweek:
“When Mayor Hamann-Roland and members of the Apple Valley City Council were contacted, they stressed that this underscores the need for a high-six figure fiber optic upgrade to the liquor store as soon as possible.
However, Farmington amateur HAM radio operator Nicholas Papagiorgio had a different take on the early morning robbery and slow police response.
‘The alarm call got to the station within seconds but there were at least a half-dozen squads reporting themselves hopelessly lost in the roundabout over by the post office. They radioed the dispatcher that they had to get a map from the hotel concierge to get out of there’.
When asked to confirm this, Hamann-Roland appeared to choke on her Fiji brand bottled spring water, abruptly cut off any further questioning from reporters and quickly retreated to the Apple Valley Cole’s Hair Salon to buy a lardon of conditioner.”

Of course they meant to say “larder” of conditioner. Gah.

MSPD’s hysterical post does bring up the interesting question of police response times. If the thieves were in and out of the Apple Valley Liquor Store fast enough to get off with a 600 lb safe (if the reports I have heard are factual about the weight of the safe) and the cops couldn’t get across town at 5:30 AM in time, how are they going to keep people from being burgled in their own homes (alarm system or not?)

Was it the same day as the free breakfast at Denny’s? Maybe they were “otherwise occupied?”

Wait, is this the Cobblestone Lake liquor store?! See what all those overpriced homes will do in this bad economy?!? Drives “upper middle class” people straight to a life of crime! The target demographic might not want to move into the “low income housing” over there now that the neighborhood is going to hell!

Why haven’t we heard anything about this on the news? As a nearby resident of this shopping establishment I really feel we should be informed when such crime occurs??

How do you just remove a 600-pound safe, anyway? Aren’t they usually bolted in to the floor or walls?

No more details were provided to me by my anonymous source or the AVPD so I really don’t know. I guess that those questions are why there are rumors that this is an inside job.

When we had a new safe installed about 8 years ago, they moved it in on small 1/4 round metal rods. Think of how the Egyptians moved massive stones on logs, and you get the picture. They rolled it in almost effortlessly, and even managed to take a few turns with no problem. It was really amazing to watch!

HMMMMMMM…… Greg seems to know an awful lot about moving safes… Where were you on Mon. Feb 2nd at 5:30 AM? Seriously though, scout the emergency rooms for hernias! I wouldn’t think you would need to bolt down a 600 pound safe. Besides, once you have the safe, how the hell do you open it?

This was a city run liquor store, right? No need for explosives, just use the numbers written on the post-it note taped to the front of the safe.
