One of our planned activities for the week was to “Bike Down the Volcano” with Maui Mountain Cruisers. They provided van service, a bike, helmets, and “warmer” gear for the temperatures at 10,000 feet. The van picked us up at our hotel at 2:00 AM (yes, AM) and drove us to the top of the volcano crater to watch the sunrise at ~6:00 AM. I was a bit hypoxic (fingers and lips were tingling) for a while but eventually adjusted enough that I didn’t think I was going to have a heart attack.
We had some superb stargazing and then watched the pre-dawn colors prior to sunrise. The cloud-filled crater was beautiful with the sun coloring everything.
The trip down from the top was about 36 miles and included only about 400 yards of pedaling total. The views all around were spectacular but you had to spend so much time concentrating on those in front of you and making sure you didn’t veer off the side and into the ravine that you didn’t get to see too much. We stopped to eat breakfast at around 30 miles and then coasted through some sugar cane and pineapple fields (who knew they grew like that?) and stopped at a church parking lot before being driven back to the hotel by 11:30 AM.
Overall a great trip and one of the more exciting things we did in Maui.
After we arrived at the hotel we ate lunch and headed to the beach/pool for the rest of the day. We did some shopping at a nearby strip mall and we ate dinner at the Fish and Game Brewing and Rotisserie. Their beer selections were decent and they had some really good food. I tried their snapper (shitake mushroom sauce and came with asparagus and a portabello stuffed with spinach, aspasagus pieces, and cheeses) and their passionfruit tiramisu (amazing) while Kim had their rotisserie chicken.
