Dude had horrible mental issues in real life, but he was sure talented. My parents didn’t have cable when I was a kid, so I remember watching MTV as long as I possibly could when we were visiting my much older brother in college. I wanted to see the Thriller video and I was geeked as all shit when it finally came on.
Rock With You was probably one of my favorites.
And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone (Yeah)
You Know That Love Survives
So We Can Rock Forever, On………
Haven’t seen the coverage to know exactly what is in these particular tributes, but many news organizations have stock obits of famous people. The AP and some newspapers do this, and I’d assume that TV channels (especially the 24-hour networks) have video prepared in case of a death or even just breaking “news.” If they don’t have material prepared and something happens, they’re scooped and the audience goes elsewhere. Obviously details have to be added, but they already have all the history in place.
Plus with the case of MJ, I’m sure they had tons of video put together from when he was all over the media during the scandals/trial. There have already been lots of retrospectives in recent years. Again, I haven’t seen it today, but they might have even used some of the same video with new voiceovers.
Bill, Crystal is correct. I helped put together quite a few of those in my day — I’m 100% sure some of them are still living.
My sympathies are out to those that loved Michael Jackson. However, as someone who couldn’t stand his music, it’s driving me crazy that I have to hear it at every turn today….I have that stupid “ABC 123” song stuck in my head.
Mixed emotions here… 1) super talented no doubt. Highlight for me was preforming with his brothers on the Motown tribute in the late 70.. Did Bille Jean. .(Shit I’ve achieved “ancient” holy crap no wonder I’m drinking fiber drinks) however 2) He was an over pampered nut job who molested little boys and should have had the shit beat of him in prison. All these fans who look the other way and accuse the media of attacking him need to realized he brought this shit on himself.
I also cannot forgive him for having three kids in some sort of weird Beard thing or maybe for future bedmates. I don’t think he ever understood what being a parent was about.
Finally, I worry about Bubbles.. who’s going to take care of his chimp now? Sad to think about.
Personally I’m having trouble mourning America’s Favorite Child Molester.
Oh, and that weird friendship with America’s Original Cougar- Liz Taylor, another bullshit celeb… Sorry gotta go now.
In a 2003 documentary, Living with Michael Jackson, the singer revealed to journalist Martin Bashir that Bubbles had become overly aggressive. He was removed to an animal sanctuary over fears he may attack Jackson’s newborn son, Prince Michael II.
I’m with Sank on the mixed emotions bit: no doubt that the man was talented on a huge scale, but he was also messed up in a major way that couldn’t be ignored when he was alive, and shouldn’t be glossed over now that he’s dead. You gotta wonder, looking at those videos when he was five years old, and seeing more recent news footage, and wonder what confluence of events: money/abuse/ego/and whatever the hell else went on in the guys life, caused him to end up that way (and that’s just thinking about how he LOOKED); and you gotta wonder about the other freaky behavior and pedophilia (nature? nurture? both?). What a waste of talent.
Dude- you left out the best part of the Bubbles story in Wikipedia..
“In December 2003, it was reported that Bubbles had tried to commit suicide. The chimp was taken to a hospital in time to be saved.”
“he slept in a crib at the corner of Jackson’s bedroom. Bubbles was allowed to use Jackson’s private toilet, although the chimp sometimes wore a diaper.
If can catch my breath and stop laughing I’m sure I’ll something amusing to say about a suicidal chimpanzee living in the same room with a pedophile and using his can.. I’m imagining a chimp, sitting on a throne, pants at the ankles, reading the paper, a Winston hanging out of his mouth, telling Michael to “Shut the FUCK UP you FREAK I’m trying to do work in here…”

OMFG this ranks up there with the best comments of the year. I can’t wait till I run that poll at the end of 2009.
I haven’t been to many concerts, but I did see Michael Jackson perform at the Met Center back in May of ’88 on the Bad tour. My whole family went, since it was when he was still considered somewhat family-friendly. I think he did three shows here, all sold out (it was his first solo tour).
Yeah, he was a nutjob, and possibly did some very bad things. He had a family, though, and I do feel bad for them at their loss, as well as all the nonsense they had to get pulled into over the years.
