We went down to Blackbird on Saturday evening before the big concert to grab a bite to eat. We had eaten there a few weeks ago for the first time and while it was good, I don’t know if we ordered the right items as it was not “great” like everyone had been telling us.

The two of us split four small plates along with a couple of Furiouses. It was fantastic.

We started with the Ahi Poke lettuce wraps, followed by the daily special of grilled herring with salsa and avacodo and then the pork empanadas. Well, the empandas were so good we went with a second order and thus had our second Furiouses. Life was good on Saturday.

Everything we tried was wonderful. The service and staff was great and while it was about half full when we arrived at 6, every table was full by 6:45. We will be back often!

On a related note, we drove by Corner Table on the way there. It was open, but empty. Sad.

don’t blame the weather on the nicollet pot holes. they’ve been there much before the ‘thaw’. and stay off of 54th also, same deal.

Nicollet in that part of Mpls right now is like driving on a 3rd world side road…. pothole heaven.

I had been to the old space a few times and will swear by the Bahn Mi also. But I had the best soup ever there, a cold plum soup. It was so, so good.

And, you know, if you want to skip having to drive past Corner Table, you can always take the 36th street exit. A little more ghetto, but closer and less time spent on Nicollet.

We haven’t been to the new one yet, but we really liked the old one. I agree with Tom and Mulch that it is very reasonably priced for the quality and freshness. Besides, looking around online, aren’t crappy chain restaurants in the $8.95-11.95-range for burgers and sandwiches these days? And their food sucks!

My glorious spouse and I ate at the old BB several times. We always left saying “we need to do that again.” We do drink alcohol at brunches and I must say it adds to the over all dinning experience. It’s good to hear the new iteration stands up to the old. We’ll visit the new one soon.

PS: Bill – what is the criteria for winning a meal on your ticket? Inquiring minds (and newbies) want to know…

I had a great time hanging out with Bill at Blackbird. It was a good experience, even if the high cost means that Bill’s kids won’t be able to afford college. I call it a reasonable tradeoff. The kid will understand.

Also, before anyone takes my comments about Frittata’s seriously, you should notice a few things:
1. I don’t know the difference between a frittata and “a pile of scrambled eggs.”
2. The menu has a build-your-own approach to frittatas with a lengthy list of possible ingredients, and I chose what most people would consider the most boring combination possible: cheddar, bacon, mushroom.
3. I recently gave Denny’s a glowing review.

So that should tell you a little bit about who I am and why you might want to think twice about taking anything I say seriously. I had a great time with Bill at Blackbird, and I give the place two thumbs up. I’m just not sure I’m really their target crowd, know what I mean? My people eat at Denny’s, sometimes Perkins. And if we’re getting fancy: Bob Evans.

I havent been to the new location, but we enjoyed the old one, good ingredients, simple menu, reasonable prices and casual atmosphere. We wanted to go there for dinner on Sunday night as we had an event to attend in South Mpls, but they are closed for dinner on Sundays. We went to the Grand Cafe instead which was very good, but more pricey. I have heard good things about the New Blackbird, and i am glad to hear the service and kitchen speed was good, as some of the early anonymous reviews (taken with a grain of salt) were critical of service and kitchen speed.

on another note, we went to dinner on Saturday at Big Bowl, and walked around the Galleria, there is a new restaurant called people’s organic cafe and wine bar. it has counter service and has beer and wine (3 types of surly). I understand it is an offshoot of the French meadow owners.

I worked at the Blackbird’s old location for a few months when we first arrived in the Twin Cities, so I’ve had both the Longhorn and the Banh Mi a number of times. I have to say the Banh Mi wins out, though you really can’t go wrong with any of the sandwiches (especially not with the walleye po’ boy). Having worked there I’m obviously biased, but I think the prices are reasonable for food produced entirely from scratch from high quality ingredients. And unfortunately it looks like we can expect prices to rise everywhere.
