According to this article in the Pioneer Press, a Burnsville woman is offering a $1000 reward for the return of her husband’s ashes after they were stolen from her home on or around February 11th, 2013.
From the article:
Patricia Eriksen’s annual vacation is supposed to help take her mind off the anniversary of her husband’s death.
But whoever burglarized her Burnsville house last month — and took the urn containing her late husband’s remains — had other ideas.
“I think they thought there was something valuable,” the 58-year-old woman said. “The only one it’s valuable to is me and my family.”
Now, Eriksen is offering a $1,000 reward for the return of the urn. She hopes if the burglar, who also took jewelry, coins and a laptop, was “somebody who’s down on their luck,” the money might inspire them to return the urn.
Her dog’s urn also was stolen. “I think they were just grabbing stuff, not knowing what it was,” Eriksen said.
Do you think the burglars even knew what it was when they opened it later? Do you think if they did they kept it around knowing it wasn’t something that could be sold? Do you ever leave your home unlocked when you go away? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This story pissed me off. Just give her the ashes back..jeez, talk about insult to injury. I hope they take it to Pawn America and get caught looking like the ass—– they are.
p.s. We have our first dog’s ashes in a small box. He died when we were living in another state a few years ago and I just couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him behind in the ground, so I can understand her reasoning. And yes, we keep our doors locked always, even when home.

I’m not going to question someone’s spirituality, even if it may be foreign to me. I think families of murder victims whose bodies may never be found, soldiers who perished in wars abroad, etc. find a lot of meaning in having their loved ones “come home” (whatever their definition may be). Maybe there comes a time when they would be ready to let go and spread or bury the ashes, but they’re not quite there yet. Who knows. Death, grieving, and the associated rites/rituals are intensely personal experiences that often don’t seem to make much sense.
For the practical response, I know these people and they live close to me. Enough that I would be happy to contribute to the reward (I just found out about this yesterday myself). Patricia has been very kind to my kids and myself.
Really, hearing about this just makes me want to find the nearest petty criminal and repeatedly punch them in the face. These people have no regard for/conscience of the impact they do.
Anyway, I just really hope these guys get their urn(s) back.

Never met these people but drive by their house everyday and I’m saddened by the whole thing. I really hope they get the urn back.

I wouldn’t call this a petty crime. Breaking into a home and not stealing anything is already a felony. Start stealing stuff and it doesn’t get any better. I also would love to pummel these type of folks.
For many, the ashes of a loved one have deep meaning. When my Grandmother passed recently, my mom wanted to know if I wanted any of her ashes. Apparently my 2 sisters and brother did. I was like, thanks but no thanks. But that is just me.

To be clear: I was not implying THIS was a petty crime.

Quoting a particular twitter page,
“lefty
@sextusmaximus”
“I am lefty. You are not. I win. I probably know more about Food, Music and Beer than you do. Supermodels follow me and all the good Food Trucks love me.”…………….REALLY????? So much BS…………. This particular “Urn” subject shows your lack of sensitivity towards someone other than yourself…………..So pathetic.

Will,
Heh. Lefty owns you. The fact that you think his Twitter profile or how he makes jokes on here (98.5% of the time) somehow reflects what he’s like in person shows you should work harder on your sarcasm and joke detection skill.

Will,
You’re an idiot. You probably spent more time looking for my twitter page than I have thinking about you. I am also pretty sure I haven’t seen the other 353 times you have apparently said something on this blog.
Also, as much as I like to joke around, the lefty twitter handle is spot on.
How many food trucks have named a menu item after you? I am guessing zero.

I hit submit too early. This is an actual picture of the menu. lefty is revered at The Sushi Fix. Go in there and ask.

Will, what Bill and lefty aren’t telling you is how incredibly hideous he is to look at. You know that face transplant lady that got mauled by a chimp over in the UK? Yes. He makes Michael Jackson’s corpse’s nose look good. Plus, that photo of the “back of his head” on his Twitter profile is actually not his head, it’s a growth on his lower torso. All that Japanese writing next to “Lefty roll” on that menu photo translates to “avert your eyes from this Medusa”. Supermodels “follow him” because they want nothing to do with the front side of him.
Let’s just say the only urn he’ll be put in when he’s gone is the one you put at the end of your driveway on Tuesday morning, and even that container will object.

I would suggest that MSPD is mildly exaggerating.
I am not as good looking as he says.
(That Japanese writing actually does translate to “left roll” though).

Bill, your blog has finally reached a level of non relevance. Your choice of words such as my lack of understanding the word, “sarcasm” referring to my comment regarding lefty’s is totally inexcusable. When a neighbor of mine looses a remembrance of her mate, ie; an urn filled with his ashes, and your “friend” makes a “sarcastic” comment towards her that you support? No wonder you have lost contributors. Mrs Marcos you were so right……….. I’m done!!!!
