Yesterday I mapped out my plan of attack for the rest of this series (if you haven’t been following along, check out my other lighthearted reviews here, here, and here) and it all started by going to Lakeville Liquors online ordering site and scoping their selection of single cans of horrendous beer to compare to the three good bottles I had left. Knowing that my next choice would be Keystone, I just had to find two horrible beers that would work. Unfortunately my research did not pan out the way I had hoped and I ended up buying three six packs of this garbage. Ugh, it’s going to be a long rest of the summer.
So, I looked in the fridge and sitting next to the tallboys of Keystone Light I had a Capital Brewery Munich Dark. Heh, get it? Light/Dark? Anyway, after giggling to myself for several seconds and attempting to explain this hystericalness to my wife, who was no more interested in my joke than she was in this experiment–or beer in general, I took my photos and sat down for the big pour.
Knowing that Keystone looks like a cup of piss, even though it comes from a “specially lined can”, I didn’t bother to take a closer look and used a red cup for the pour. It smells malty and shitty–much like any beer that costs all of $3.99 for six 16oz cans. The head on it was big and frothy and it took me several seconds of popping the bubbles to get it go down to a point where it was drinkable. I took a couple of sips and wondered how in the fuck I have had these several times this summer already. Seriously, Keystone Light is fucking nasty and their specially lined can apparently, at least to me, makes the beer taste like cow piss–I wonder if it would be worse without it? While my wife stated that she heard it comes out on top in blind taste tests I can tell you right now, unless you are not a beer drinker, this shit tastes like sweetened toilet water. Ugh.
After not even being able to finish the 16 oz, I switched to the Capital Brewery Munich Dark. The beer is a wonderful darkish amber color and had very little head. It had a faint malt smell with hints of some caramel. Even before I put it to my lips I was sure that this beer was going to be a very pleasant surprise–and it most definitely was. While it was super sweet from the malt and I wished it had some hops to it, it was a very drinkable beer that washed the taste of that fucking Keystone Light right out of my mouth. Even though this was a dark beer, it was pretty refreshing and something I could see myself drinking several of these regardless of the time of year. An excellent beer and definitely one that ranks up there for this challenge.
This particular can of Keystone Light: (1.5/10)
This particular bottle of Munich Dark (8.5/10)
Have you ever had Capital Brewery’s Munich Dark? If so, what did you think of it? Perhaps you are one of those people who were in the blind taste tests and thought Keystone, in the specially lined can, is great beer (if this is really you, please just go jump off a bridge already). Whatever you think about my tongue-in-cheek comparison please let me know and please make sure you check back for tomorrow’s beer choice vs Milwaukee’s Best Light (mmm, the Beast).

…and how do you know what cow piss tastes like? Eever had a Black Wattle Superior? A great dark ale from Oz. Deep dark color and woodsy aroma. Flavor fills your mouth with nutty flavor and slightly creamy. It has a moderate finish which is very satisfying. It’s on my short list.

I tried a Keystone once, but couldn’t finish it, for the same reasons you describe. It’s pretty foul.
