To Make a Coffee originally uploaded by Michele M. F.
Last week’s poll asked about your milk preference while I am not a milk drinker I still prefer whole milk (although 2% is tolerable) and I find skim to be absolutely nasty. Even so, it appears that the majority of people like to drink light blue tinted cloudy water as most people responded with “skim”. Nasty.
This week’s poll is about how you like your coffee. I’m not much of a coffee drinker being that I’m mostly caffeine free (‘mostly’ in that I’ll have some decaf coffee or chocolate now and again) but recently I’ve had an uptick in the amount I’ve been drinking. On vacation we like to have coffee in the mornings and we purchased two bags of Dunkin Donuts decaf to make while we were there. Instead of wasting it and throwing it out after we were done, we brought it home and I’ve been slowly making my way through it.
I have always made up my coffee like my father did: extra cream and no sugar. I’ve never really cared for my coffee with sugar in it and just the other day my wife handed me a cup that I asked her to make for me and it was nearly undrinkable because it was so sweet. Ick. However, while I’ll still drink coffee with cream and sugar in it, I will absolutely not touch black coffee. Why anyone would want to drink coffee that way is unknown to me.
So what about you? How do you take your coffee and why? What brands do you prefer and do you usually go out to get coffee or do you make it yourself/drink the office coffee? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and vote on the sidebar over there —> and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I never have even liked the smell of coffee, let alone allow myself to become addicted to it, however I was a user of Diet Coke for many years. I also had high blood pressure those same years. I gave up all soft drinks and as much of anything with any refined sugars as is humanly possible, about 6 months ago and I feel and especially sleep, better than I have in several decades. (I am 64). About two weeks ago I tried a small glass of CocaCola with some pizza and the next morning I actually had a slight headache from the caffiene after having avoided it for so long. That proved to me that I am better off without it. Advertising is powerful and I shudder to think how many dollars I have spent in my lifetime on soft drinks just because everyone else does it.

There isn’t enough cream and sugar in the world to get me to drink coffee. I love the smell of coffee but have never liked the taste, I find it bitter and it doesn’t taste anything like it smells.

I take my coffee black and I prefer a full bodied/dark roast. Since moving out of MN I’ve had to find a new standard to brew at home, which I make every morning, taking a travel mug of it to work with me. Right now that standard is from Trader Joe’s, an organic fair trade variety (whose name is escaping me right now, proving that I need more before doing any complex tasks). Usually the stuff at any office I’ve worked at is too light and eventually I end up bringing in my spare pot so when I want more than is in my travel mug, I’m able to brew something that is satisfying.
While I freely admit to being a coffee junkie, and know even if I’m sick or hung over I’d better have at least a small cup to prevent a caffeine headache, I very much enjoy the flavor. Plus the smell of coffee brewing in the morning is a wonderful thing.

I love me some coffee. Best way to make for me, french press with Itialian Roast. I also like a Depth Charge some times- cup of black coffee with a shot of espresso added. My family makes Turkish coffee. Fine powdered coffee in a stove top craffe, brought to a boil and then let sit to cool and to let the grounds settle. Add a few table spoons of sugar and serve. Only time I take sugar in coffee.

I make most of my coffee at home with a Cuisinart Grind-n-brew. I buy the beans from European Roasterie in LeCenter MN. I would highly recommend them for those that like to support “local” business and also get very high quality beans.
On the road my favorite is Peet’s Coffee, however, they are only found on the East or West coast. Starbucks most of the time when no Peet’s.
I would ask everyone to boycott Dunkin Donuts as they are beyond evil to their franchisees:

I love strong coffee, dark roast, with caffeine, no cream, no sugar. I guess it’s because I love the smell and taste of coffee and am addicted to the caffeine. I can’t imagine putting anything else in my coffee. I can’t stand any flavored coffees either, like hazelnut. Ugh.
I’ve rarely missed morning coffee for going on 50 years.

Black, and the stronger the better, though I don’t drink nearly as much coffee as I used to. I get odd looks at Starbuck’s or Caribou sometimes when I order just an espresso, like people can’t comprehend that someone would just drink that on it’s own. But I will also order a latte or cafe au lait once in a while for a change.
I’m not all that picky about what kind of coffee I make at home, but I have found Dunkin Donuts to be consistently good.
As for preferred brewing method, I use one of those simple one-cup devices that looks like a funnel and put the filter and coffee in it, then pour hot water from my electric teakettle into the setup. Though I am looking at getting a french press, since everyone I know who uses one swears by it.

I’ve tried drinking coffee once, and that was enough for me. I believe it was with sugar, no cream then. Over the years, various people have tried to convince me that if I just put in the right combination of add-ons I would enjoy it, but I think I’m fine just not drinking it. Besides, coffee is one of my least favorite smells.
I don’t regularly have a lot of caffeine…an iced tea here, a pop there, chocolate everywhere. I can really feel the effect of it when I do, so I’m not sure I’d be a good candidate for coffee (though maybe my tolerance would increase if I was a regular drinker).

Pretty much what Mrs. M said to the letter. I used to drink oodles of caffeine, but gave it up a couple months ago (for the most part) because my migranes were worse and more frequent. Now I have an occasional caffeinated soda and benadryl when I feel one coming on and *poof* it goes away. It’s cheaper than Imitrex.

I’ve taken to drinking my coffee with a lot of milk in in it just to cool it off. I also enjoy coffee black. If I want it sweetened, I gotta use saccharine. I am happy with some of the darker roasts I can get in K-Kups for my Keurig coffee maker.

Tried all sorts of methods and while working at home for the last year ended up back to the french press because I would go through at least a pound of beans a week when I made cold press (1lb would last several weeks of french press). Now that I’m back in an office setting I usually drink the stuff made in the office, though we do have a bean grinder which makes the office stuff pretty good. I like cream in my coffee and stopped using sugar this year.
I recently was introduced to the areo press at work as well, which has turned out to be an awesome way to make a single cup of coffee however you like it. I prefer to use the aero press to make iced coffee, especially after biking to the office.

I don’t drink a lot of coffee. I make it at home once a month tops. But what I like is a light roast coffee, brewed strong, with cream.

We love coffee in our home. Our brew is Yuban. It’s a little expensive but well worth it. We also grind beans from time to time and enjoy espresso. Last week Dr. Oz had a program about the health benefits of coffee. No wonder it tastes so good….. and it is good for you too. :)
August 28th, 2011 at 7:35 pm
Will, amphetamines also have health benefits when taken in moderation too ;-)
August 28th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Bill, but it’s legal. :)
August 28th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Interesting that the poll numbers aren’t reflecting the comments. 45% of the votes are “N/A” but the comments seem to be overwhelmingly in favor of drinking the horrid stuff. Drinking coffee kills brain cells. ;)
August 28th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
I am drinking a 20-ounce mug of Starbucks with creamer as I write this. I have a couple of these each day. I also grab a venti Americano with a drizzle of half-and-half when I’m out and around. I prefer Starbucks, but will drink Caribou in a pinch. Really don’t like Dunn Bros. Tastes burnt to me. I usually will drink my coffee with creamer or half-and-half. But I drink it black if there’s only powdered creamer available. That stuff sucks. I’m with Bill about sugar. Coffee shouldn’t be sweet.
August 28th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
Will, so were “Bath Salts” (which were basically amphetamines) ;-)
August 28th, 2011 at 7:51 pm
Tobacco is legal too. Many things that harm us are legal, we just have to choose what we ingest. For me, it’s not coffee. But I love soda. Love. Choose your poison peopls.
August 28th, 2011 at 7:55 pm
Geez Bill, just wait until they legalize …P-O-T… Then we can have a discussion. :)
August 29th, 2011 at 8:26 am
Sank’s the man. I should just copy and paste his post.
I’ll put in a plug for the coffee share through the Harmony Valley CSA — from Kickapoo Coffee in Viroqua, WI. http://www.kickapoocoffee.com Some really great stuff.
We do a pot via French press. On the mornings (like today) when I have to leave for work before the kids are awake I don’t run the grinder, so I stop off at Caribou. Usually I get a depth charge, although I’ll mix in a cold press.
Expanding on the earlier post re: milk, I use Coffee Mate instead of 1/2 and 1/2. I know, I know…fancy organic, fair trade, carefully roasted coffee and Coffee Mate. But I don’t use so much that it kills the flavor of the coffee.
Any hardcore coffee afficianados that haven’t tried it yet — get up to Kopplins at Randolph and Hamline (next door to the Nook). They do a great job there.
I also like the Angry Catfish (bikes and coffee) up in South Mpls. Good coffee there.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:37 am
Why is N/A an option on the poll? Doesn’t seem to add anything interesting.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:38 am
Coffee is only good if it’s iced. I don’t drink it very often, maybe twice a month max. Due to the fact I hate to pay 4.00+ for the frou-frou coffee I like from Caribou, I usually end up getting a vanilla iced coffee from McDonalds.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:37 am
Other: I take mine… decaf. Mostly espresso-based drinks, preferably with copious amounts of chocolate and milk. I was super excited when Caribou changed chocolates, because now all of their chocolate types are decaf.
August 29th, 2011 at 11:02 am
I take my coffee black, with all the caffeine I can get.
When I read this poll, my first inkling was to make fun of all of those that need to mess with the goodness of black coffee and call you pretenders or something like that. But then I had dinner at Corner Table on Saturday night…
My dessert was a ridiculously uncomplicated item of malted vanilla ice cream with a shot of hot espresso that you dumped over the top of it. Basically we added coffee to our cream and sugar. It was a perfect ending to the best meal I have had there yet. Of the 5 plates presented to us that night, every single one of them went back completely cleaned off. It would seem as if the transition from Chef Paumpich to the new guy has started working. I wish there would have been more people eating there however.
I will no longer make fun of the cream and sugar crowd.
August 29th, 2011 at 3:32 pm
Ben, it’s for those of us who don’t drink coffee.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:20 pm
Sean, Rainbow sells Peets coffee right now. It’s delish. Also, TJ’s New Mexico Pinon blend is really nice.
I started out drinking coffee black and my dad was so proud. :) Now I prefer it with creamer because that’s the only way I can choke down the swill at work. Oh, and it has to be rocket hot. I mean flay the skin off the roof of your mouth hot.
If I’m getting it to go, I usually get Starbucks because I’ve never seen faster baristas. Christ, I can see the moss growing on those folks at Caribou waiting for their lattes. However, the most awesome cup of coffee I’ve had lately is the Dogwood Single Source bold at YoYo Donuts. They do that method where they brew it a cup at a time. Plus they have Maple Bacon doughnuts.
August 29th, 2011 at 8:21 pm
Oh, and I love the cold press at Spyhouse almost more than my own mother.
August 29th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
I take my coffee black, with full caffeine and for the caffeine as I’m an addict. :) I usually procure my daily cup from the office cafeteria where they serve City Kid Java, which I think is pretty good for cafeteria coffee. When out and about, I usually drink Caribou light roast drip coffee and at home it’s Folger’s Classic Roast. I don’t mind the taste of the coffee black, and my reasoning behind leaving out the sugar/creamer is to avoid the extra calories. On occasion though, I’ll add a little cream to my coffee as a special treat. As far as decaf goes, it’s one of those great mysteries I’ll never understand, like drinking non-alcoholic beer.
August 30th, 2011 at 10:01 am
ick, coffee. Never could understand why people drink it. Thus I never understand why people want to ruin perfectly good food by making it taste like coffee.
Now folks that drink coffee only with lots of sugar and creme, well you are wimps. Either you like it or you don’t. Adding all that junk doesn’t mean you like coffee, just means you like sugar and creme.
August 30th, 2011 at 10:05 am
Mikeh,
I like the taste of coffee when it includes milk or half and half. I don’t particularly care for the taste of either of those dairy products by themselves however.
I personally prefer ribs slathered with BBQ sauce than ribs plain with no seasoning/sauce. Does that mean I don’t like ribs?
August 30th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
I used to drink far to much coffee (always black) but cut way back to limit my intake of caffeine. Now my caffeinated drink of choice is whole leaf tea. I never realized great a cup of tea could taste. Not the Lipton’s crap, mind you, but the quality whole leaf teas you can find at places like Indigo Tea in Burnsville, or the Tea Source. Black, green, or oolong, it’s great stuff.
August 30th, 2011 at 5:59 pm
I only drink iced coffee and use a toddy (cold brewing really cuts the acidity and bitterness in coffee.) Use a french/italian roast, some skim milk, and ya got a lovely cup o’ joe …
September 1st, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Well there is a difference between prefer, and won’t touch. I know people that won’t touch black coffee but if it is creme and sugared, it’s yummy. But say you won’t eat ribs without bbq sauce, then yes, I’d say you don’t like ribs.
It’s a twisted world, my pov is.

I think this poll might’ve been more interesting if it were titled, “What is your preferred delivery method of caffeine?” In which case an ice cold can of Mountain Dew takes care of my crave. Yeah I know it’s bad in large quantities, but it’s so tasty. To each his own.
