According to this article over at Thisweek, the Dakota County Commissioners and members of the MVTA took up a taxpayer funded opportunity to try out a $627,810 bus simulator meant to get MVTA bus drivers prepared for the Bus 2.0 system–something which was supposed to go into service in March but as of yet has not.
From the article:
Rosemount Mayor Bill Droste, a member of the MVTA board, compared the experience to a ride at Valleyfair, and County Commissioner Tom Egan said, “I’ve been through airplane simulators before, but nothing quite like that.”
The system has been found to increase safety and reliability by improving driver confidence while driving in narrow lanes.
Well isn’t that great. I’m so glad that $627,810 of our money is going to fund an amusement ride. How about putting that money to something of good use? Oh, right, the article claims that the simulator has been found to increase safety and reliability but from what I understand at least one driver does not feel that he has gained any benefit from the simulator and finds it to be, “nothing more than a huge video game.” Another mentioned it is an insult to professional drivers to assume that a simulator will help improve their already expert driving skills. Clearly this sentiment is something which at least one Dakota County Commissioner agrees with considering that he compares it to a ride at Valleyfair amusement park.
Boy am I pleased that the Dakota County Commissioners and MVTA representatives, the people who are supposed to be good stewards of our tax dollars, are playing gigantic video games all in the name of great public relations for a multimillion dollar program which is months behind schedule. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that those the system is supposed to assist find it useless and insulting. Can one of the County Commissioners please explain why this large expenditure was approved when it is clearly a waste of time and tax dollars and nothing has been said about why it has been delayed, please?
What do you think of the multimillion dollar Bus 2.0 program and the delays it has experienced so far? How about the PR article written by Thisweek which does nothing to dig into the background of why the system has been delayed and what the drivers think about it? Whatever you have to say about the MVTA’s Bus 2.0 program and Valleyfair amusement ride go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.
