I prefer to use the USPS. It's usually cheaper and nothing I ship is that important. I also prefer to receive packages USPS. I live in an apartment and it sucks big time to pick up at Fed Ex or UPS (I live in St Louis Park and driving to Brooklyn Park during rush hour sucks balls). I only have to drive a mile to pick it up at my local post office. There is a lady in my building that is the package-signer-forer which has made me less crabby about UPS.

i think fedex has the same 'hub' as ups in MEM. however, i don't know the numbers. what i do know is when we order something online, it may show up usps, fedex or ups? not my choice, it just shows up. if i/we have to return something, we'll get a postage paid label (deducted from the $$ of the item), i take it back to the uspo and away it goes. painless i guess.

i think lefty's stuff may be by wagon train, Ward Bond anyone:)

I ship critical documents, and receive them from overseas. We use Fedex as we have found them to be the most reliable, with the best tracking and very good customer service. If they tell you they will deliver prior to 12pm, they do. and their standard overnight service delivers before 3pm. With UPS I often get non guaranteed deliveries at 6:30pm at my door which I found poor service.

I use the USPS for sending merchandise samples domestically and overseas... the value of their Priority Mail and Global Priority Mail services is excellent. Tracing is not possible, but generally 99% of my packages arrive within or before the time period they offer. Also if you ship it to Western Europe or Japan they deliver usually well before the max 7 days they alot. I use their online click and ship service so that my packages are posted by me, so I only need to drop them off, also this avoids the issue of the 13 oz package dropping in the mailbox... if you use click and ship USPS allows you to drop packages without handing them to a person which usually requires waiting in line.

For gifts or personal packages I use either USPS, or Fedex Ground or Fedex Home delivery. I will add the caveat that we have a very active account with Fedex so our rates are not what you get quoted from them for an occasional package you might send...

I have no specific problem with UPS, I just tend to think Fedex's system is superior and they are much more professional. (DHL is ok, but also a bit less determinate; TNT is not good... avoid)

FedEx 100%.

In the last 20-or-so years, I've had jobs that required me to ship critical/time-sensitive shipments hundreds of times and the only carrier that has proven absolutely reliable time in and time out has been FedEx. In my experience they will deliver almost precisely when and how you choose to ship it. This has included hundreds of shipments to east Asia (Singapore, Japan, China, etc.)

I also really appreciate their office at the airport. I forget the exact hours, but I think they're open until about 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and have weekend hours as well. I've desperately needed that service for some work-related shipments.

I don't have an issue with UPS. I find them easy to use and reliable as well. But FedEx is my go-to so I have less experience with UPS.

Sorry Patti, but USPS has sometimes been a nightmare to deal with. In my last job, there were a couple times I was REQUIRED to use USPS to ship (when my company was making business proposals to the USPS). I encountered offices that close a few minutes early, shipments that aren't where they are supposed to be on time, and staff that will only do as much work as they are absolutely required to do. Contrast that with the FedEx people at the airport that will practically stand on a runway to stop a plane to make sure your box gets on there.

I will say that I've had many, many positive and pleasant transactions with USPS staff (buying stamps, asking questions, etc.). There are some very fine people at USPS. But, unfortunately, when I'm shipping something important, it's impossible to look past the less-than-helpful experiences.

I love UPS tracking. I have not had any problems with them. Every driver/employee I've ever dealt with has been great.

I have no recent experience with Fed Ex.

Hate USPS. Last year our Christmas package to North Carolina took 2 1/2 weeks to get there without explanation - and cost us $84 to send. They used to be cheaper than UPS, but now are more expensive (unless you can fit the goods into their tiny flat-rate boxes).

USPS tracking is abysmal.

My last contact with SpeeDee was several years ago when they took several weeks to deliver a box of food product to my place of employment. When the box finally arrived, it had been sitting in water and the food inside was wet and moldy.

Honestly have not had a problem with delivery of anything from either UPS or Fedex, though it seems as of late our UPS deliveries are getting made later and later in the day. One of the last ones was an overnight package that wasn't delivered to my door until after 7:00 PM. (Not entirely the fault of UPS - the vendor used the most inexpensive overnight option, and they do indicate thir deliveries may be made later into the evening, particularly for residential properties.).

If it has to be tracked, it goes via whomever is cheapest between UPS and FedEx. If not, it can go via USPS flat rate boxes (which actually are a pretty good deal and I haven't had one not make it). Overnight, I prefer FedEx.

DHL took a week on a two day shipment to figure out where to deliver it to, but this was years ago. Not impressed.

The times that I do much shipping I've used USPS flat rate boxes or priority mail envelopes because a people in my group I ship to are often from Canada, and USPS stuff flows through to Canada at much more predictable costs than UPS or Fedx.

I love the tracking I get from UPS and Fedx and prefer to go to a Fedx or UPS shipping location vs a Post office because they tend to not be as busy. Both UPS and Fedx are very interesting companies to follow. They both are extremely focused on cost control within the organization. And due to their scale, they can benefit from what would seem to be small optimizations.

I've also used Yellow Freight (when they were around) to ship an engine, and I've worked with DHL.

While I've typically had no trouble with UPS, I prefer USPS and FedEx (who also deliver on Saturday, btw). This last 2 months has been absolutely awful with UPS:

- 2 day shipping from Amazon - received by UPS on Dec 27. Per their own tracking, arrived in Eagan and was scheduled to be delivered Dec 28. Arrives at my door Jan 2. All beat up. And smelling like smoke.

- There's also the package that tracking said was delivered to my door (we were home all day) - the next day one of the neighbors from the next court over brought it over to me (thankful for honest neighbors).

- Finally, and the package that was shipped from Target on November 27 via UPS that still hasn't arrived. (Yes, I finally got my money back but had to wait 3 weeks).

Two of these incidents can't be blamed on how busy they are in Kentucky as, per their own fabulous tracking, the packages were already 15 miles from my house.

I don't ship things myself too often, but like Patti I tend to go with USPS just because of the Priority Mail flat rate boxes and the automated kiosks. Plus they don't charge extra for Saturday delivery (of course, that may not be available at all in the future) and can deliver to mail boxes. At my company, we tend to use FedEx the most.

As far as receiving goes when buying something, I tend to go with the cheapest option unless I really need something fast, and that is usually USPS (and companies that force me to use UPS or FedEx when it isn't necessary make me less likely to buy from them).

Disclaimer: I work for the USPS.

That being said...I tend to use the Priority Mail flat rate boxes for heavier items being sent to family and friends. Cheap, easy to mail, don't have to worry about the weight, can stop and use the automated kiosk at 5:30AM on my way to work and not have to deal with a cranky window clerk.

For things being shipped to me, I do prefer UPS because their online tracking is top-notch and I can even get a text alert when something has been delivered. I've only had one UPS item go missing in the 19 years I've lived here and it was just a few months ago and it was due to a misdelivery. They always tuck it away out of sight on my patio so that it can't be seen from the street or driveway.

I had the same rural carrier for 19 years until his retirement in June. The only time anything went missing was during his vacations or on his day off. My mail has been a mess ever since! Part of the problem is the townhouse next to mine has been a rental unit for 3 years now, and anything that gets misdelivered to them doesn't appear to get passed along. (I've also told the owners of the unit that the next time anything of value goes missing, I'm calling the Postal Inspectors...)

I agree with DM.

Most of my shipping is done by UPS when available. They have accurate and updated tracking information.

Both FedEx and UPS have a release on file to leave packages without my signature, in a secure location on my premise, so I don't have to worry about having to drive to pick up a package. Also, UPS seems to be my default as most places I buy from online have UPS as the default.

DHL is used by one of my vendors and they are damn quick as well when shipping from the midwest region.

An alternative I've recently found for regional stuff, which is quicker and far cheaper than just about anyone else, is SpeeDee. They severely lack in the tracking details, but I can save about 1/3-1/2 over UPS when shipping things to a Client with their service..
