This site spends a lot of time discussing the negative impacts that certain city council members from across the South Metro have on our lives. A suggested twist to this was to ask what the readers think about those that may be on the losing end of poorly decided votes.
In a new series of threads I have planned, I’m going to post a city and the list of city council members for each. I’m asking that you give your input on any (or all) of the members and the work they have done for you and your fellow citizens. Even if you don’t live in the city being discussed, feel free to add your thoughts, comments and suggestions. You can take the high road, the low road, or even the funny road in each of these discussions.
From the City of Burnsville’s list of City Council members:
Mayor Elizabeth Kautz
—
Charlie Crichton
Dan Kealey
Dan Gustafson
Mary Sherry
Have fun with this and let’s see who comes out on top as the favorite city council member for each city and possibly the entire South Metro!

No question: Charlie is the best, most respected council member! He lends an OBJECTIVE voice to the council and I love his dry sense of humor. He cares about the city’s money like it was his own and is adult enough to be comfortable when he’s the lone voice for an unpopular position. Plus, he always looks dapper in the Firemuster parade! Gotta love Charlie!
Dan K. and Mary are too new to judge but, based on last Tuesday, show promise in voting their convictions.

Okay. My thoughts on the matter…
Mary Sherry is cool because her name rhymes.
Charlie is a crazy old nut, but by and large he has the best interest of Burnsville in mind. He didn’t give me Halloween candy one year but it was at least better than the Vote Kautz stickers I got from Miss Elizabeth. (Seriously lady, if you really wanted to make an impression on those too young to vote, King Size candy bars would have been appreciated.)
I don’t know anything about Dan squared.
I don’t like Kautz. No one should be in power from my DARE graduation to now… especially given the way she has ruined Burnsville. (And what’s up with the stupid starfish story? Get a different annecdote.)
So. Based on this I’d say Charlie is the best. Despite his lack of Halloween treats.

Charlie is my man, but he unfortunately comes off a little crotchety at times. I think he’s sometimes thought of as the voice of the senior citizens in town, which really isn’t true. A younger voice articulating Charlie’s conservative message would be nice.
Honorable mention: It was always fun to watch Liz Workman with her rolling eyes, inappropriate laughter and caustic attitude. Great theater.

This would be easier if it called for us to pick our least favorite! However, I think that Charlie and Dan K. give thoughtful rationales for their decisions, though sometimes Charlie is a bit hard to understand. So, of the two, I guess Dan K. has my vote. Mary Sherry is a bit of an unknown quantity, but I like what I’ve seen so far. She’s been able to resist becoming a Liz Workman-like figure and has not fallen under the Mayor’s control, which is a plus, and I hope it continues. I worry about what is going to happen if Charlie decides not to run again, as it would appear that the Mayor is grooming her neighbor Dee Dee Currier as a possible candidate to move up from the planning commission, which does not make me happy, as DDC has lots of name recognition from her days on the school board, and I have not been pleased with her voting record on the planning commission.

Whit o’ wit, you made it sound like Dee Dee was a former school board member. She’s actually a current member. Her term expires in 2012.

My favorite is Mayor Elizabeth Kautz.
No, I’m serious. The woman is a goldmine for great quotes and post topics that I’m 100% positive I would not be able to get from anyone else. While Dan Gustafson had that one great outburst, the rest of the Burnsville City Council members are more or less left in the dust by the antics of Kautz.
If you look at the sidebar over there and the counts of topics that come out of Burnsville are astounding–and many of those are about local politics. If you went through those posts and compared them to the other local cities, you’d find that Burnsville trounces the other cities. Burnsville’s mayor, hands down, makes the worst decisions–and thus the juiciest ones–in all the South Metro. If it weren’t for her, I’d probably still be scrounging for posts to write.
So for that, Mayor Liz is my favorite.

Lyn: whoops. Good point. I remember she had retired from something, but that must have been her job as principal.
