Last week’s poll asked how you went about moving your stuff. While I had been helping someone move to build up karma, I wondered if others would ask their friends/family to help them move or hire the pros instead. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised that “Pros” won out over the “free” option but as I look at the bruises on my biceps and remember the soreness that lingered for days, I suppose I should consider the pros next time too ;-)
This week’s poll comes after The Wife and I sat down to watch the movie Higher Learning (trailer above) last evening on Amazon Instant. The movie itself wasn’t terrible, aside from the ending, but being that it was released in 1995, it reminded me that I loved the mid-late 1990s. As a child of the 90s, I really came to appreciate the clothing, music, etc especially now as I listen to the rebirth of pop that dominates the top 40 stations these days and look as many younger kids rediscover the awfulness of the clothing styles worn during the 1980s.
So the question for today is what was your favorite decade. Obviously I wasn’t able to put enough numbers in there to list Chapter&Verse’s favorite decade so he’ll just have to write in the BCE dates in the comment section below. Otherwise choose yours on the sidebar and comment on below to say why. Was it the music? The clothing? Simply the fact that it’s the only you best remember? Maybe it was the politics of the time or just the memories you had. Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The 1990 Toyota Camry was my first and only true (vehicular) love.

It really depends on what we’re talking about.
Music? The 90′s, undoubtedly.
Fashion? Tough to beat the 40′s and 50′s.
Movies? Hard to deny the genius of the early films, and the comedic grasp of teen life that was John Hughes in the 80′s.

The 80′s hold my favorite memories of Saturday morning cartoons and toys, which I still hold onto. I don’t think any other toys or cartoons have come close.

I voted other, because I want my favorite decade to be the one in progress, then the one after that, and then the one after that, and so on.

Music?
70s, 90s, 00s. No 80s – yuk.
60s music gave birth to the great stuff of the 70s, but in and of itself wasn’t really very good. It did get better towards the end of the 60s.
80s bad. Very bad. Slick cutesie syncopated drivel.

Bahh… there is good and junk music released just about every day of every year. You just have to be a little more selective. Yes, the popular tides can shift into some abhorrent areas, but the good stuff is always around some where.
Personally my best Decade was the 70′s, more so because I was young and dumb and didn’t have a care in the world. My parents getting divorced hardly put a blip in my enjoying life.
Once you become responsible for others, I don’t know any particular time is better than the other. For the most part you’re just doing the best you can do to keep things moving forward. What decade it happens to be when you’re doing that doesn’t really matter. The last few years have 2000′s looking pretty bad overall. I’ve been lucky myself, but with a number of people around me being directly affected by the economy, it tends to be a bit of a downer. Especially when you see how ineffective those we put in charge have been. With the upcoming election, I remain dubious that any improvement is forthcoming. I just keep my head down and cross my fingers.

The 80′s certainly had good music. Mikeh is right that there is always good stuff coming out, though it may not be the Top 40 stuff. A lot of the good music in the 90′s had its roots in the 80′s, for example.

Style/music-wise, I like the 60′s a lot (though I wasn’t born until 1979!).
I am most wistful for the period between 1995 & 2000. I was a teen & did most of college in those years, so there’s that. But I also feel that it was some kind of last gasp of creativity, vitality, and social engagement before everything became impossibly corporatized to the point where you have to be omnipotent to really be engaged because it’s all such a tangle. I guess I’m worried that the U.S. has sold out to the point of no return, and the 90s were our last chance to enjoy real freedom. I hope I’m wrong!
