Meatloaf Sandwich originally uploaded by Su-Lin
Last week’s poll asked if you had a favorite fall dish to make and while the majority answered that they did in fact have a favorite they didn’t answer the other part of the poll which was to provide the recipe. I do plan on making Blada’s recipe for sausage and spaghetti squash in the next few days however as it sounds tasty as can be!
This week’s poll has to do with your favorite type of sandwich. My mother had a saying which went something like, “I like any sandwich which I didn’t make,” and I suppose I follow a similar mantra although I do have a few which I consider absolute favorites: liverwurst, egg salad, and meatloaf sandwiches. Although in addition I do love a Dagwood with tons of pickles, roasted red peppers, roast beef, turkey, mayo, etc, etc, etc especially just as I sit down to kickoff for the Vikings.
When I was a kid my favorite sandwich was a meatloaf sandwich. Nope, not PBJ because that is the most vile concoction on the face of the earth and anyone who eats, child or not, is insane and parents who feed it to their children are horrible. My mother would make a meatloaf on Sunday and then refrigerate it and cut it into slices for my sandwiches. A couple of packets of ketchup and I’d be set for the week. I know I had this every day for at least a year and I believe two even though my mother denies that she’d allow me to do that. Best part? No bully would steal my lunch because they couldn’t fathom eating meatloaf.
So what is your favorite sandwich? I have added a bunch of options to the poll on the sidebar and then an “other” option as well. Pick one or pick other and then talk about your favorites and why. If you make something special, especially if its worthy of a Sunday football snack, please do share as I’m always looking for a tasty sandwich to get washed down by my stash of imported Yuengling.
So go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

wow, i’m a meatloaf guy too, warmed up in a sammich of course. i don’t know if you can put a finger on the ‘best’. left over turkey or chicken is always a hit. warm super chunk peanut butter on sourdough is a hit with me. fresh rhodes rolls with anything is good too. one of my fav’s is braunschweiger on toast with a dab of spicy mayo.
now i’m hungry:)
it’ll be interesting to see what other folks fav’s are.

Weird – I agree with Bill on something! I love meatloaf sandwiches, too! My husband will take them to work for days after I make a giant meatloaf for dinner. I love braunschweiger with mayo and spicy sweet pickles. Another favorite is leftover turkey done up the same way with lots of salt. My dad always made us white bread slathered with butter topped by sliced radishes. An old stand by is fried bologna with yellow mustard. Another one that I had growing up was fried polish sausage sliced almost in half (makes an X shape after cooking) with ketchup and pickles. I do enjoy a good reuben, too. And of course PBJ’s!

I’m in the “any sandwich I didn’t make” category. :) I like pretty much all of the standards, though I don’t like yellow mustard on anything, ever (other kinds are OK). If I had to pick one, then it would be a proper Cubano sandwich.

I voted for turkey. I enjoy a nice deli turkey, sharp cheddar cheese, and good wheat bread sandwich often for lunch. I did not omit any ingredients which means I DO NOT want mayo or miracle whip on my sandwich. I will promptly through a fit if either condiment appears on ANY sandwich I consume (other than a small dab of Miracle Whip with tuna).
When we go to New York and get cold cuts from Wegmans (mmmm Wegmans) I will make a sandwich on white Italian bread, turkey, ham, deli American cheese, and tomatoes. Mmmmm that is the “vacation sandwich.”
The ultimate of course would be the post holiday REAL turkey sandwich – white bread, butter, salt, pepper…that is it, don’t foul it up with anything else.
I enjoy meatloaf sandwiches if made from the Lipton Onion Soup mix recipe, just meatloaf and bread, nothing else.
Any other day (including yesterday), I enjoy a lovely Jif peanut butter sandwich with Smucker’s Plum jam on 12 grain bread.
Damn, now I’m hungry for a sandwich but breakfast is done and it isn’t lunch time yet….thanks, Bill! <–sarcasm

I have a hard time choosing between Roast Beef and turkey. For a day to day sammie, I’d pick turkey, with tomato, mayo, pepper and green peppers in a pita. Yum. I love the occasional roast beast sam with tomatoes and swiss on a hard-crust-roll.

I think braunschweiger with cream cheese and raw onion on a bagel is my number one sandwich. But I love many others including tortas, especially from Manny’s Tortas, and tuna melts.
But now I’m going to have to make a meatloaf tonight because as soon as I saw that picture above I was craving it. I haven’t had meatloaf in years.

I love a veggie sandwich, with all the harmful mayos and oils added, of course. I did make one yesterday from canned salmon and mashed up avocado. It wasn’t bad, but it needed mayo. EVERYTHING needs mayo. : )

I don’t think much about sandwiches, although I do eat them a lot. I would have to say the best is a turkey sandwich made later in the day on Thanksgiving. Still warm turkey pieces, Hellmann’s mayo, salt & pepper. Maybe better than that is two of those!

Good call on the meatloaf, I didn’t think there was anyone else that ate meatloaf sandwiches, and I see a couple people on here that do. Unfathomable, but yummy.

lets not forget fried spam that includes a weeks worth of your daily salt intake:)

My favorite is a BLT with lots of mayo! I love liverwurst too, but like it best with just plain old butter on soft wheat. It’s hard to beat a turkey sandwich made with Thanksgiving leftovers so you can sneak some stuffing on it too!

Dayna,
Liverwurst with butter? Never done it that way (usually mayo, mustard and onions). Do you toast the bread when you do it that way?

The fact that PBJ was left out is a smack in the face to sandwiches. Like it or not, when most people think of a “sandwich,” they think of a PBJ. They were my lunch staple at work when I was a bachelor. Doesn’t get much easier for a lunch.
Okay, so it’s not exactly my favorite…but I still eat one almost every day. It’s just too cheap and easy.

I was prejudiced by the poll choices. I redact my previous comment and vote and change it to tomato sandwich on toast with mayo.

I loves me a good meatloaf sammich. I also like a roastbeef with cream cheese and jalapeno jelly sandwich. Mmmm. I can taste it and I havent’ had one in a while.
I like brawnswiger aka liverwurst. Once in a while a good, and it has to be really good, tuna melt.

Chopped liver with bacon and tomatoes on fresh egg twist. Yum. Good peanut butter on rustic whole grain. Bacon and egg on a toasted buttered bagel.
October 3rd, 2010 at 8:57 pm
NO jam/jelly on the peanut butter. Ever.
October 3rd, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Cream cheese, chopped veggies, cheddar, sunflower seeds, and fresh dill make a great sandwich.

I had to give Turkey the nod, mostly because that is my primary option. I prefer making my own sub sandwiches with turkey, ham, cheddar cheese, bacon sometimes heated up, and then adding fresh cut tomatoes and lettuce all on a fresh sub roll.
and just for bill, I made 2 peanut butter & grape jelly sandwiches yesterday as a snack. Yum.

Leftover pot roast makes a a ridiculously good sandwich. I also like pulled pork. My favorite right now is probably Pastrami though.

It’s interesting to see the bent towards things that are made at home. Maybe that’s a function of how Bill wrote the post. I guess I’m going to take a different angle since, to me, the best sandwiches are found in restaurants, etc.
If I had to choose a single “favorite” sandwich, anywhere in the world, right now I would say the corned beef on Jewish rye at Jake’s Deli in Milwaukee. Everything about it — from the quality of the ingredients, the decadence of the meat, the way it’s served , the freshness of the bread, to the surroundings and nostalgia — is perfect.
A close second just might be right here in Burnsville if you can believe that. The “Cubana” Torta at Olmeca is an outstanding sandwich. The torta rolls are made every day, on-site and griddled. They cut a whole avocado to order for the sandwich. The chorizo has a nice kick, beefed up by the breaded pork patty and a slice of ham. Refried beans, jalapenos, mayo and white cheese. Not to mention, it’s an absolute monster — this is a two-hand sandwich without question. I just ate one 30 minutes ago and I will put Olmeca’s torta up against any in Minneapolis, including Manny’s. Olmeca’s torta blows Manny’s out of the water.
Along those lines, in December, I had a spectacular Cubano at Exquisito Restaurant on Calle Ocho in Miami. That ranks high on the “favorite sandwich” list. Waiting for takeout on the sidewalk, listening to Christmas carols on an 85-degree sunny day added to the mystique of the sandwich.
The pastrami sandwich from Katz’s in Manhattan is a favorite, much for the same reasons as Jake’s corned beef. Same for the cheesesteak at Pat’s in Philly, although the “experience” factor starts to take over vs. the actual ingredients themselves.
Locally, I love the pastrami sandwich at Be’wiched in Minneapolis. This is a different pastrami experience than the Jewish style delis. If you appreciate very high-quality preparation of deli meats, get the pastrami from Be’wiched and take a generous pinch of the meat out of the sandwich and taste it.
In the “local, made out of beef” genre, I like the Italian Beef sandwich at Brianno’s in Eagan and the roast beef sandwiches from Maverick’s in Roseville, which are probably the simplest sandwiches on my “favorites” list.
Of the “open-faced” sandwich options, I guess that’s where I would put one of my favorite food combinations on the planet — warm bagels or bialys with cream cheese and sable (smoked black cod with paprika dusting). Of course, you can’t get any of that here in MSP unless you mail-order. If I’m ever in Manhattan, Russ & Daughters is a must-stop to grab some sable.
Open-faced meatloaf, turkey, roast beef, etc. come from Wally’s in Bloomington or Emily’s F&M in north Minneapolis for me. Usually Wally’s because I work close by.
By the way, great topic Bill.

I love hot, grilled sandwiches or paninis the best. My faves are Reuben and Cuban!

Congrats to MSPD on becoming the second person to reach the 1000 comment milestone. Chad was the first: http://www.lazylightning.org/apple-valley-plans-to-spend-77600-on-website#comment-54488
It took MSPD 3 years, 2 months, 28 days, 19 hours and 24 minutes to reach 1000 comments.
In appreciation of his milestone I would like to present him with a $25 gift certificate to Chateau Lamothe. They were kind enough to put forth $15 towards the gift certificate. Thanks guys!

Favorite Sammich (local): Degideo’s on west 7th in St. Paul: the sloppy dago. A thick Italian sausage patty on fresh bread, smothered with sauce.
Unless, because you have to eat it with a fork it no longer qualifies as a sandwich, then it would be a toss up between grilled cheese (with yellow mustard!!) and a reuben.

Good lord, I’ve been hanging around here THAT LONG?!?
I need a life.

What the hell is wrong with PB&J?
October 10th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
It has to be said. Why would turkey win? Is it the influence of a marketing campaign touting the supposed health of turkey? Is it the emotional impact of the Thanksgiving/Pilgrim bird idea?
Face it, turkey these days is the most chemical-injected, genetically altered, brined-and-flavored-up meat that exists. Yet, after all of the scientists’ best efforts, what little taste the turkey has isn’t that good. Really.
The low-fat thing? As a concept, low-fat is wrong. We need to eat fat to be healthy. Calories from fat don’t count any more than other calories. Also, turkey isn’t always that low-fat, anyway.
Anyway, I think that the IDEA of turkey easily trumps the TASTE of turkey.
Don’t care for it. Never did. So sue me.

Is this poll over? I love Panera’s chicken salad on tomato basil bread. The chicken is organ and so tender. They use good mayo and the mustard gives it a zing.

I agree with virtually every comment that MPSD said – spot on. However, I do have a unique sandwich I make at home that I get an unbelieveable craving for every now and then. It sends my family running for the door, but sometimes I just gotta have it.
Take 2 slices of toasted crusty sourdough bread, butter, peanut butter, generous portion of sommersausage, American cheese. Slap it together, and there you have it. None of it should work, but it does for me.
Oh, and a good meatloaf sandwich really is hard to beat, too!
