Last week’s poll asked what your favorite part of fall was and unsurprisingly “changing leavings” was the winner. While football coming in second wasn’t a big shocker to me, the fact that “other” was right there with it. Pretty crazy to think about all the things that make fall great in some people’s minds. For me I continue to hate every second of fall knowing that we’re now just that much closer to seeing the white stuff fall from the sky. Boo.
But since football was such a big winner, clearly we have some sports fans in our midst. While not normally a topic I cover here, it was covered and received some good discussion when Chad did a guest post about Favre, so why not have a poll which asks what your favorite sport is (thanks to Joey for the idea).
Prior to college I was never into watching sports. It just wasn’t something we did in my house. While I listened to the Phillies many nights growing up, it was never on TV. I didn’t know how to throw a football until I got to high school, something which was incredibly embarrassing when football was all we did for two years of gym. While I had played t-ball and attended some baseball games, it was regarded by my father as something which was terribly boring–much like all sports. So I never really go into any of them until college when I began watching football every Sunday with the guys I swam with. When I moved here I became a Vikings fan by default (they don’t really show any other teams here aside from the team which we will not mention out loud) and have been a football fan since.
So the poll for this week is, which sport are you the biggest fan of? While you may like them all, there has to be one which you look forward to most. What is it and why? Feel free to vote on the sidebar, pick one of the preselected options or “Other” and write in your own. Go ahead vote and then comment on and then feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I just see the results from last week’s poll, not a new one.

I’ve always been a big rhythmic gymnastics (featuring colored ribbons) fan.

Fixed the poll. Sorry!

Mr. Sank has much love for hoops. I was a GS Warrior season ticket holder for 10 years during the Chris Mullin/Tim Hardaway years. I now attend as many Wolves games as I can.. I love the game, I must to sit through 25 years of those two teams.

Lacrosse all the way. We are Minnesota Swarm season ticket-holders and just came back from a trip to Oklahoma to watch 100 Cherokee players face off in a big traditional lacrosse game at our reservation. That was a real blast — Jesse got a chance to see how the game was played originally (with two sticks, no pads and full contact). I think I’ll take my sticks and play next year. Pray for me…

Soccer is my favorite for watching. Though, I don’t go to games because they are in Blaine and that’s just too far away. I did get to a couple games when they were holding them at St. Paul Central.
For games I go to, I only go to baseball. Though, I haven’t been to a game in the new stadium.
For playing, I loved playing hockey. It was awesome. I would play basketball again if I could find anyone to start a team.

Hockey, all levels from youth to high school to college to professional. I know local kids in the NHL and it has been rewarding watching them blossom from youth leagues to the big league. My daughter is best friends with one and he is still the same kid as he always has been. Minnesota is the State of Hockey. I had a Bobby Orr shrine in my bedroom as a kid.
I have taken a shining to football just because I like Brett Favre.
I started liking the Twins this year as I have developed favorites on the team.
Lacrosse is the booming youth sport in the state right now. For my youngest, it is her favorite sport right. She is a three sport athlete, but lacrosse is new and exciting.
The Olympic Games, in particular the Winter ones are something that I stayed glued to the TV for for their duration.
The not so much are basketball, golf and tennis.

Football is my favorite to watch, followed by hockey. Those are the main two I will watch on TV, though I’ll also watch as much of the Olympics as I can in those years. I got pretty into the World Cup this year too.
I will watch most sports live if given the chance (except golf), but there are some where that’s the only way I will usually watch it. Baseball is a good example, since I just can’t get into it when watching on TV.

Baseball is first, St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins.
College basketball is probably second. My dad is from North Carolina so I’m a big Tar Heels fan.
Football is close behind. Go Packers!

Only watch football, except I have to work every Sunday so I only can catch night games. Go Pack Go!

I watch the entire Tour de France every year — it’s really the only sporting event I will watch religiously.
I’m also an Olympics geek. Any sport, summer or winter.
As far as team sports, Gopher Hockey is #1. Our family is also huge into baseball and the Twins, although I’m the least passionate. My wife is a Twins freak.
Anything else, I’m just a fairweather fan.

Football for me, especially with a few fantasy football teams in the house. My husband and I have been carefully cultivating our daughters to enjoy it too. Just make every Sunday a party with snacks and they are on board.
I’ve also gained an appreciation for attending swim meets now that my oldest is swimming.
I’m looking forward to my first trip to Target Field in a couple of weeks, but expect that the novelty will wear off long before the ninth inning.

Pro Football – Vikings and Falcons.
Baseball is a distant second, although I am a pretty big Braves fan and cheer for the Twins.
I like the Olympics, probably winter more than summer, but the coverage is so horrible as to make it nearly unwatchable.
September 12th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Somehow forgot March Madness. Not really a big basketball fan, but love the first couple days and the coverage is generally great. The Olympic coverage could take notes.
September 12th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Chad, watching the first week of March Madness in Las Vegas is something to behold. I’ve done it a couple times — there’s another poster on here that I know has gone every year at that time for 20+ years. I’d recommend it if you’re into college basketball.

I’ll catch the superbowl, and maybe if the Queens are doing well, watch more than one or two games, but I do love NASCAR, and any auto racing, especially rally.
September 13th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Pro Football for me. Mostly because it happens over the winter when I’m not able to be out doing other things. I don’t have time for baseball or basketball. Too many games and I loath pro basketball in general.
I used to watch the olympics, I really enjoyed the “Wide World of Sports” back when I was young, dumb, and had spare time. I’ll watch the Strongman competitions, who doesn’t get a kick out of a guy pulling a 747 100 yards with a rope?

Baseball is the fave, although i had been a football no1 fan most of my life, as I age I prefer baseball… football nowadays has become too violent. The combination of speed and athleticism and violence has had an inverse effect on me. I was looking on comcast on demand today and watched 10 minutes of the 1959 Big Ten football season highlights… its like watching a different game completely… now it is all like extreme damage on steroids, the intent appears to be to injure the other player.
Having said that , i prefer college football and watch alot. I will watch the NFL too, but the combo of speed athleticism and violence there is even higher in ratio and i really only watch the Vikings or the playoffs …
But the Twins and baseball have become my favorite.

As for spectator sports, college football reigns #1 in my book. The NFL, I can take or leave. I agree with the comments on the Olympics–I’d like to watch, but the TV coverage is horrible. (Just show us the events!) I have zero interest in hockey, basketball, auto racing. I do watch some of the majors in golf.
Participatory sports–mountain biking, golf, skiing.

Professional football remains my most favorite sport to watch and keep tabs on. Most of this has to do with the environment I grew up in (sports fans).
The funny thing is that even though football is the number one golf is the second on my list. I can actually watch the grass grow if there’s a tournament on TV.
