Last week’s poll asked whether all of your shopping revolved around the local grocery store. The vast majority said that it does not, possibly invalidating the hopes and dreams of the Farmington City Council that a newly revamped grocery store in the downtown area will save the town from the draw that other local towns with other grocers have on its residents. Me? I’m not at all partial to a single grocery store and I routinely shop all over the place depending on what’s convenient for me at the time. I agree that this is nothing more that politicians wishing for a reality which simply does not really exist.
This week’s poll is about flossing. It’s the one thing that your dentist tells you to do all the time that you may not do all that often. It’s supposed to promote healthy gums and teeth. Dentists scare the living you-know-what out of you in the office but as time goes on following your appointment it just seems to go by the wayside leaving you with the next appointment and sore and bleeding gums as the Dental Assistant assails your mouth as if they were trying to cut down trees.
So what about you? How often do you floss? Do you floss regularly but still find yourself with sore and bleeding gums after an appointment? Do you think you should floss more but just can’t seem to do it? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on and vote on the side bar and then feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I don’t floss, and decided long ago there would be a better way someday. I switched to an ultrasonic toothbrush a few years ago, and that has made the dentist very happy. They compliment me on how much better I floss now than I used to. Heh.

I floss. I use one of those little reachy thingies and floss while sitting on the couch. I have a hard time finding non-mint floss sometimes, so I stock up when I do.

Phillips Sonicare is awesome. Eliminates the need for flossing.

Religiously floss. Every night before bed. It’s one of the better habits with big payoffs that I’ve realized.
1) Stopped going to the dentist every 6 months. Go yearly now. And, spend 5 minutes with the hygienist.
2) I’m avoiding having my gums operated on like my brother in law and a few people my age at work. I pass the “pocket” check with flying colors every time. Nothing deeper than a 3.
3) When you floss, you help prevent your gums from becoming inflamed. That’s a good thing. What is happening when your gums are inflamed is that you have a chronic bacterial infection in your mouth. This harms your arteries through two mechanisms: the bacteria find their way in to your arteries and hang out (causing plaques), and your body mounts an immune response to the bacteria in your mouth, causing inflammation (which in turn can cause your arteries to narrow). This makes it hard for your heart to do its job and can lead to heart disease.
I don’t have many good habits but this is certainly one.

use something called Dent-o-tape. It’s less of a string and more of a ribbon and works pretty well. Flossing never became a habit when I was young. Parents never pushed me hard enough I guess, one of the down sides of divorce and a mom who isn’t home all the time because she has to work.
If your gums are sore and bleeding after visiting the dentist, you haven’t been taking very good care. Normal, healthy gums usually do not bleed from dental cleaning. I’m kinda down on Dentist’s in general. I feel like the charge a bit too much for basic services, and that they work to optimize the insurance money they can get rather than what will actually be good for the patient. I.e. teeth sealant for kids teeth that are just gonna fall out anyways? WTF? In fact for kids I want to have to deal with the consequences of their not staying on top of brushing and flossing. Learning on a tooth that will fall out anyway seems like a good time to learn that lesson.
all that said, yes, tooth decay can lead to significant bacterial infections in the human body. That bacteria in our mouth is not supposed to be in our blood stream. So take care of your teeth.
