Last week’s poll asked about your willingness/desire to travel for work. I have been doing it more and more and have generally thought it was fun depending on the location and amount of time. It would seem that based on the responses provided that most of you agree. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it better when you are traveling–especially with young kids?
This week’s poll comes from this Savage Pacer article regarding the rapid rise in the number of gun permits granted in Scott County in 2012 and how it mirrors similar trends in other metro counties.
From the article:
Permit-to-carry handgun applications are up 60 percent over last year. On this day last year, the county had 272 permit-to-carry applications. Right now, it has had 456 for the year.
[...]
Hennepin County is experiencing a similar trend, with a 54-percent increase in 2012 compared to 2011, according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune.
While the article doesn’t go into specific motivations for why individual people are applying, one has to wonder if people are just doing it because they can or because they feel a need to protect themselves more than what existed when the law was enacted in 2003.
Do you have a carry permit and if so why did you choose to get one? Do you feel less safe now than you did say 5 years ago and that you may want to carry a gun for your own protection? Do you have plans to add a permit in the near future? If you don’t carry one on your person do you have guns in your home to protect yourself and your family from some possible future threat? Do you think the current law should be changed and that people should not be able to carry firearms on their person?
Whatever you have to say about this one vote on the sidebar and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I have a permit to carry. I have had it for a few years. I have always said that if I got a hand gun that I would get a permit to carry it. When people ask me why I have a hand gun I tell them that its 90% for sport and 10% for protection. I think that in the right place with the right people they can be a lot of fun to shoot. I don’t think that a gun should ever be used to protect your property or to give you any sense of courage that you wouldn’t have if you didn’t have a gun. I truly hope that I never have to use the gun but if it meant protecting my wife and children I would.

I believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to have the means to protect himself and his family from predators. It has been proven time and again that weapons in the hands of honest people save lives. The Police can not be everywhere. I had a concealed carry permit for many years, long before laws were changed to make it a “shall issue” decision, if you are sane and have a clean record. My sons carry, many people I know carry and we are all safer because of it. I let my permit expire when I became totally disabled, but no one would want to attempt to break in to my home. That would be a mistake. The schools and the lying media would have you believe that if there were no guns, all crime would just go away. We need courts that enforce the laws we already have and keep bad people locked up. Repeat offenders repeat, how hard is it to understand that?

I teach the class required to get a carry permit. Based on my experience, most people that get their carry permits don’t carry every day. Its more for a “just in case” or the fact it also works as a purchase permit for 5 years, instead of the annual one that is needed to purchase.
I do have a permit, but don’t carry very frequently.
I’d welcome you to come sit in on a class sometime. Drop me a note and we can make it happen :)
(BTW, I tried to respond via your mobile website and it gave me a weird error and didn’t post..)

mark, the mobile site gives errors but it seems to post anyway for me. The plugin is the latest version but I’ll test it some more and see if I can fix whatever issues it’s having. Thanks for the heads up.

I have one, but I never carry. In Minnesota if you want buy a gun you have to get a permit to do so from your local police. This has to be renewed annually. If you get a concel and carry permit you don’t have mess with that, you’re legeal to buy for 5 years. Seeems eaiser since I never know when I’m goning to be at that gun show somewhere and see the Rugar 1911 with the walnut grip i’ve been dreaming about.

I carry a concealed firearm regularly, but I don’t have a permit. Why would I want the man to know I have a gun? That is worse than those liquor stores that scan your driver’s license.

I don’t own a gun or hold any permits. I just don’t like guns and don’t have a need for one. I support the ability for people to carry and don’t believe restrictive gun laws are beneficial. I also think I may get a gun when my kids are older and I have the extra income to support that kind of hobby. It’s definitely not a cheap hobby!

I have gun and plan to get my carry permit this year. I will probably not carry much but it will help me feel safer at home especially if I move to a rural home.

BTW, for home protection my plan is not to go for the handgun, rather the 12 gauge since if someone was breaking into myhouse I would be a little nervious about being dead on with a handgun. Besides, my hope is racking the shotgun would make the right sound to let the bad guys know to get the hell outta the house.

Seeing as how outside of Joey, the entire population of the Metro area is armed and ready to shoot someone at a moment’s notice, I’m going “one up”.
I’m now driving to and from work in a Humvee I just bought from the Military Surplus place down on University. The bonus is that I was able to find and hire an Iraq War veteran to man the roof-mounted turret.
I’ve also lined my driveway and the perimeter of my lawn with IEDs, laser guided missiles, and remote surveillance cameras/detonators. I have 24/7, multiple-angle views (even on my smart phone). I suggest using my neighbor’s driveway to turn around now. If I see an uninvited vehicle entering my home’s security perimeter, I’ll reduce it, and everything within 50 yards to shrapnel and ash. Nobody’s gettin’ my 64-inch plasma TV, dammit.
Frankly, I’m just going to start mowing down random groups of people with an AK-47 because, from the sounds of the posts above and my gun-toting step-in-laws, you just can’t trust anyone anywhere/anytime and my family is in constant danger of being raped, kidnapped, robbed, and murdered.
Statistics be damned. I need to arm myself to the hilt, STAT.

It’s true that the statistics in Dakota County are very good. But self-defense is a fundamental right. If someone wants to jump through the hoops required to get a CC permit, more power to ‘em. It’s not something to take lightly, and I think most people recognize that.

I personally hate guns. I also hate motorcycles for the same reason.. I will never own one because I don’t want one in my house. Call me a tree hugger or whatever…but it’s a personal choice.
I don’t care if others carry, own, or feel safer when carrying. As long as those carrying attend the training and know how to use the device properly, I see no issues. That doesn’t take into account the “sane” factor, but that is the same with anything. I think the reason for the increase is strictly just because they can. I doubt these people that applied this year all carry daily, or even regularly, although maybe they do.

The problem with getting a C&C permit is that if you have a gun on you and you are above .04 blood alcohol content, you are breaking the law.
That is the other reason I didn’t get a permit since I am pretty much over .04 all the time.

Every rare time we’ve had any crime issue in the past decade, the Lakeville Police has done an excellent job. I feel more than safe with nothing more than a baseball bat for protection. I know too many people who are constantly paralyzed with fear who would shoot in the bushes if they heard noises, so I have strong reservations about the position that everyone must own a gun.
However, I support the right to carry responsibly. Many towns out-state cannot afford enough police on patrol 24-7 with such short response times. If one needs a gun, it’s your Second Amendment right.
Also, I was a good marksman when I attended military school and enjoy target shooting and trap.
