Last week’s poll asked how you get your movie fix and to be honest, I was completely surprised by the number of people who waste $10 a month on only a few movies by going with Netflix instead of other, less expensive, options. Plenty of great discussion about why Netflix is so great and worth 5x as much as other options, but nothing that convinced me it would work in my situation. I suppose that in theory I’d love it but I just know it’s not going to give me the bang for the buck that kiosks do. Maybe if/when their streaming library becomes larger.
This week’s poll comes courtesy of Josh. Last night my wife and I hosted a BBQ for ~25 people in our lovely home in Apple Valley. We spent hours cooking, cleaning, and getting setup and everything went great–especially the weather. As my message on Twitter states, I made 22 hamburgers and had many hot dogs ready to go. While most people opted for cheeseburgers, a few of us, including Josh and myself went for the dogs. Now, as I have mentioned a few times in the past and especially via this post about hot dog eating etiquette back on the 4th of July 2008, there is absolutely no good reason why anyone over the age of 18 should eat a hot dog with ketchup on it. None, and no matter how many of you state otherwise, you’re dead fucking wrong. Ketchup is awesome, no doubt, but it does not belong on hot dogs. As if sauerkraut and ketchup go together? Ha!
Anyway, since I’m sure many of you disagree with me on this I’d like to know if you prefer ketchup or mustard on your hot dog. I’d also like to know what else you put on your hot dogs? I personally prefer horseradish mustard and sauerkraut, but in a pinch (like Friday’s preseason Vikings game against KC where there was no fucking sauerkraut to be had in the Dome–a travesty!) I’ll use onions, relish, and whatever else they might have. And I’d rather eat a hot dog plain than put fucking ketchup on it.
Hot Dogs: Ketchup or Mustard?
- Mustard (49.0%, 36 Votes)
- Both (22.0%, 16 Votes)
- Ketchup (18.0%, 13 Votes)
- Other (9.0%, 7 Votes)
- N/A (3.0%, 2 Votes)
Total Voters: 74
So go ahead and let us know if you’re a child or an adult (ketchup or mustard) and then comment on letting us know why you prefer one or the other as well as what other toppings you like on your dogs. After you do that please be sure to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

Dogs– A1 bold w/ a bit of the Kickers Ketchup & ton ‘o relish
… Off topic- sounds like you were at the Dome, for the Favre coronation… The Media coverage made it look like the Super Bowl… curious on your thoughts.
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
1. It made the crowd more energetic and Tavaris play better.
2. The LRT was fucking packed in and out of town that night–uncomfortably so.
3. It was pretty fucking cool to see that many flashes going off all around the Dome.
4. The “fans” showed just how fickle they are when they booed him after going 1-4 following the unbelievable ruckus they put up when he came out onto the field.

I go for either relish or kraut myself. I don’t enjoy sauces on my hotdogs because I am a messy eater & I hate having that stain on my shirt. My husband, is anti-ketchup in EVERYTHING. So, he usually has mustard on his dogs.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
As someone over 18 years old and eats hot dogs with ketchup (don’t judge me). I am eagerly waiting for Bill to invite his readers to a Hot Dog eating party with different kinds and styles of prepared hot dogs. I am happy and willing to learn.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Now that’s an idea!
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Ketchup for me. I like relish on them too and not a lot else usually. I’ll go with some mustard occasionally but it’s not my staple.
And the ketchup has to be Heinz! Yes, I am a bit of a snob about my ketchup…
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Never have liked dogs much. I think I’m probably un-American. I did enjoy the dog at the famous Gold Coast Dogs at O’Hare Airport. I don’t remember what I put on it, though. Probably ketchup! You’re never too old to be immature.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Mustard and onions, as god intended, with kraut when I feel the urge. Horseradish mustard is also great, but usually have that on brats
August 23rd, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Mustard. Onions if available, but ketchup is gross on anything at anytime.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:04 am
My favorite hot dog ever was served at Buck Hill several years ago when they had a hot dog “stand” in the chalet.
Deep fried dog sliced lengthwise with a slice of bacon down the middle and topped with cole slaw.
At home, I prefer mine well done on the grill with Sriracha and a toasted bun.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:18 am
I get three dogs every race day. Chicago dogs at Johnnys, no ketchup.By the way, whats the difference between ketchup and catsup? I do like a chilidog once in a while.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:47 am
Chili and onions!
August 24th, 2009 at 8:33 am
chili dwags from the gopher bar in st. paul!!!

Totally agree on the “no-ketchup on hot dogs” stance.
As for my dog preference? When feeling simple – I go mustard (lots) and relish (lots). Otherwise I go for the works – anything and everything…BUT ketchup.
The best Metrodome stand for the everything dog is the Top Dog stand. Amazing.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:40 am
annnnnnnd, we do like old fashioned hot dogs served on a bed of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, with mustard. try it:)

No one has suggested BBQ Sauce??
August 24th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Ditto bb stacker! Try the ones at the Ball Park Beer Garden at the State Fair. They are really good!
August 24th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Kind of off-topic….but for a day trip, head down to Nerstrand Meat Market (Hwy 3 to Northfield, 246 to Nerstrand)…great smoked meats (try the dried Beef), including old-fashioned Skin-on Hot Dogs. Good time of the year to hit the State Park as well

I like brown mustard (yellow mustard is an abomination) and sauerkraut on polish sausages and bratwurst, along with onions if there are any to be had. For hot dogs, I like relish and onions, but I will use ketchup if there’s no relish.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Ketchup (agree with the HEINZ only as Joey stated) and a little yellow mustard. I can go without the mustard if necessary but MUST have ketchup and lots of it. I love ketchup.
Difference between catsup and ketchup – I don’t know if this is 100% accurate but I’ve noticed that catsup is what HUNT’S calls their ‘tomato based condiment’ and ketchup is what HEINZ calls their delicious tomato based condiment.

“I like brown mustard (yellow mustard is an abomination)”
Tim – I usually agree w/you, but here we must part ways – but let’s not let it turn into a Coke vs Pepsi thing :) I’m all about the yellow mustard on a hot dog, “mit kraut” if available. Flame away.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination. It is allowed for humans under the age of 16 perhaps, as mustard, like scotch, is an acquired taste.
I am not anti-ketchup, it has its place, especially on hamburgers, and most importantly on french fries. But the frankfurter is of German origin should be served with mustard on historical grounds. I do like relish and kraut and am partial to a “loaded” Chicago dog as well…
I never have figured out the catsup vs. ketchup thing, although I think ketchup is winning. Heinz is my favorite, it can be argued it is heavy on the vinegar and Hunts has more tomato flavor and sweetness I suppose.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Mustard. Ketchup is a downer.
On a related note…..what kind of dogs do people prefer? After much scientific testing, I prefer Nathans. Nathans dog, fresh off the grill with mustard, on a toasted bun. That will give a good brat or polish a run for its money.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
i like Hebrew National, but Nathans are fine, and Vienna from Chicago too.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:49 am
Cleveland Municipal Stadium Mustard (originators of stadium mustard) was the best. Have to do dogs and brats with mustard. I like to mix it up from time to time between plain jane yellow mustard and spicy brown mustards. Ketchup is supposed to be used on fries (with vinegar).
Chilli dogs are good too, but only with yellow mustard.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Seriously, like mustard is even a fraction of the importance of Coca Cola!
Oscar Mayer regular hotdogs, nothing fancy. I only like them boiled in hot water, NEVER grilled. I know, I know, flame away.
I found this little gem on YouTube…

I like to throw mustard, and Frank’s Hot Sauce on my Nathan’s dog. Good stuff.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Nils, that’s yellow mustard, right? :)
August 25th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I’ll put ketchup on a dog if nothing else is available but it obviously doesn’t belong on a Chicago dog or something.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Mrs Marcos………….really? Boiled hot dogs bring nasty flash backs of school food.
Funny though, I was at the in laws for 4th of July and they boiled hot dogs. Who boils hot dogs instead of grilling on the friggen 4th of July????????!!!!!!!!!
Nathans grilled, although I do like Hebrew National as well. When grilling is not an option we pan fry them in a grill pan, and then put some ice cubes in the pan and put the lid on for some steam. Not sure why, but it seems to make them really yummy.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I prefer them boiled to be honest. As the juices seep out, the hot dogs sit in the oily water and gain more flavor as the day progresses. This is the whole process behind the world famous Sabrett Hot Dogs in NYC.
Dirty Water Dogs FTW!

I’ve been busy and have glossed over reading this for far too long.
Bill, I think the next Lazy Lightning meetup should be at The Wienery in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis. The Wienery is to hot dogs what King’s Place is to burgers.
My favorite lately is “The Upsetter”: Hot dog wrapped in bacon and griddled, then served with American cheese and an egg on top (made to order, but it just begs for a medium cooked yolk…just a bit of ooze).
The fries are excellent.
It’s a total dump….I love it.
Done right and on a fresh bun, I could eat a hot dog without any condiments at all. The only common things I don’t like on there are ketchup (any spelling) or BBQ sauce.
Chicago style, chili-cheese, just mustard…it’s all good.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Ketchup never. Still my motto.
I didn’t know you could boil hot dogs until I was 15. I’d always microwaved them when I ate them.
I have a “gift certificate” from a friend for a free meal at the weinery (just her buying me dinner) ’cause I’ve always wanted to go there. I dig dogs.
I prefer homemade brats if given the option though. I can never turn down a brat.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
I usually nuke hot dogs but I think I will try boiling them in the future. I’d heard people swore by dirty water hot dogs, but didn’t know why until now.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Tim, please don’t let my statement confuse you. Unless you are boiling a good number of dogs and then plan to let them sit in the fatty water for a couple hours, you aren’t going to see the benefit.
Now, anything, and I mean fucking anything is better than nuking a hot dog. For fuck’s sake man, you shouldn’t use your microwave for anything except microwave popcorn or leftovers.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
How does microwaving negatively affect the hot dog?
August 25th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
It negatively affects all food and should never be used. Yuck.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
dawnmarie,
The Wienery has brats and polish sausage as well, FYI.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
the Weinery sounds interesting.
Chris and Rob’s has 2 or three spots in the Twin Cities… check it out for a good Chicago dog… locally owned. There is one on 42nd near Roosevelt High School… it is next to a bible beating gospel singing small church that was letting out when i went there on an early Sunday afternoon…big crowd of well dressed mostly African immigrant congregants… my daughter practices floor hockey at Roosevelt so i go there in the evenings sometimes too… Buster’s is just a few blocks away… great burgers

Look for Bills new book “How to Cook a Fucking Hotdog you Moron” by Bill Roehl Its on the NY Times best sellers list and available at Amazon.com and your local book store. Its a great read.

I always thought that the Mustard and Ketchup thing was divided by the Mississippi river. East of it and you prefer ketchup. West of it and you know better and would never touch a hot dog with ketchup on it. Mustard a must, ketchup a bust.
September 2nd, 2011 at 11:54 am
My husband put ketchup on both the corndog & foot long hotdog that we were sharing at the fair. It pissed me off.

The Magic Bus hot dog (mexacali?) with the refried beans and other Mexican style toppings is my go to dog.
September 3rd, 2011 at 9:57 am
No one else eats them with miracle whip or mayo like I do? I like ketchup as a dipping sauce, but not on foods. Mustard is starting to grow on me a bit, but I still prefer the white stuff.

As long as this is being revived, I will also mention peanut butter. Or, better yet, peanut butter and bacon!

This thread just reminded me that the Magic Bus moved to Denver over the winter.
Say what you like about how great Nate Dogs is (and it is), but Magic Bus easily had the best food truck (bus) dogs in town last year.
