Last week’s poll asked about your favorite kind of cheese. Cheddar, unsurprisingly, was the #1 choice with pepperjack right behind in #2 (which I admit was a surprise for me). Plenty of interesting choices for those who chose “other” including some which made me cringe and others which made me seriously consider going out of my way to try what was recommended. Mmm cheese.
This week’s poll is about sleep. Last week was hell for me. I had a long final paper due for my class which I had to throw together, including 80% of the research, in a week’s time. With that came a lot of long days and long nights writing, researching, and editing (thanks to those of you out there who helped with that–you know who you are and you’re all the best!) Because of those long days and nights, and worry about my grade (91/100 which I thought was a bit on the low side boo), I didn’t get as much sleep as I normally do.
I’m a steady 8 to 8.5 hour a night sleeper. I have always required that much sleep (aside from a short time due to meds which made sleeping a near impossibility) and I cannot fathom how the vast majority of the US population gets by on as little as 3 – 5 hours a night. I am basically comatose if I sleep that little. Ugh.
Well, with all the school stuff going on I finally crashed on Friday afternoon. After submitting the paper and wrapping up work for the day I laid down on the couch for a quick 30 minute nap which turned into a quick 2.5 hour nap. I even slept in on Saturday morning until 8 AM! I plan on taking a much needed nap following my Father’s Day gorge session at Fogo de Chao later today (never been but know enough to fast before we go ;-))
So how much sleep do you need? Are you one of those crazy people who routinely functions on less than 5 hours of sleep? Perhaps you sleep very little during the week and make up for it all on the weekends? Are you a 8+ sleeper? Whatever you are go ahead and vote over there on the sidebar and then comment on with your sleep habits before checking out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

need 8hrs at least

I need a lot of sleep. I take a medication that renders me comatose, and have terrible insomnia if I miss it. Once I roll out of bed, I have another medication to help me wake up.
I sleep 8-9 hours until I am woken up by children, and then usually go back to sleep once they are taken to school. My nap can be anywhere from 1-4 hours. If I had my choice, I would sleep as long as 12 hours each night. And, who knows, I may still need a nap after that too.
Yeah, call me lazy, I agree.

7-8 is ideal for me; more than that and I’m too sluggish during the day. I usually get between 6-6.5 a night, though, which is something I’m trying to improve.

I get 5-7 hours a night. Since I work from home, I am able to take a nap to compensate some days. It usually stems from noisy people coming home late and dogs getting up at 5:15am. I am a very light sleeper. If I get more that 8 hours at a crack I am sluggish the next day.

I echo what Tim said. 7-8 would be ideal but I usually get somewhere between 5-6.5.
I think the sleep I get is very restful though. Although what concerns me is that the past few weeks, I’ve noticed that I wake up 20-30 minutes after I have fallen asleep because of a nightmare.

If I am busy at work, I can easily do 5 to 6 hour nights for a stretch. But if I’m going to have any extended idle time at work, I need 8 hours. I usually live with 7 hours during the week and a good 8 or 9 hours Saturday or Sunday.
when i was in high school, I could easily get by with 5 or 6 hours of sleep per week. A couple times, when working on research papers, I’d go with no sleep.
Also, I don’t take naps. My body wants at least 3 hours of sleep at a crack. If I fall asleep for just an hour or less, I’m not right until I get real sleep later.

Seven hours minimum. I was on a medicine until recently that had me sleeping 10 hours on weeknights and 12-14 on weekends, with naps. Now that I’m off it I find I’m sleeping less and less, though I think I’ll end up with about 7-8 being my normal.

Go to bed around 10pm and get up at 4am on days I work.
Off days I usually get up at 5am and go to bed anywhere from 8pm – 11pm. I will take a nap about twice a week on off days for 2-3 hours.
I’m still screwed up from working 6pm-6:30am for about 12 years with my current job and nights previous to that for several years. I’ve been working 6am-6:30pm for a couple years now (which doesn’t really help get back to “normal”) but I still can’t sleep for more than 6 hours at a stretch and often it’s more like 5 hours.
I just wake up after that amount of time and even though I set an alarm I usually don’t need it as I wake up around 3:30 – 3:45am on days I work.
Kinda sucks…

plenty of time to sleep when you’re dead

No poll option for 6-7. Booo.
June 20th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
I’ll be sure to add a ‘I am a poll option whiner’ category to future polls just for you Chad ;-)

I go to bed at 11:00. I get up at 6:00. I figure it takes a few minutes to settle in, say my prayers, etc. That means I sleep somewhere less than 7 hours, but certainly more than 6.
Your poll has caused me a great deal of consternation. I hope I can sleep tonight.

The more sleep the better.

If I want to feel good, I need 9-10 hours. However, I typically get 6-7 hours; and often only 5. It’s pretty rare for me to have a day where I don’t feel like curling up under my desk and taking a nap!

I’m doing well if I’m in bed by midnight and have to be up at 7 at the latest, so fit the 5-6 profile more than the 7-8, unfortunately. The earlier the kids have been getting to bed though, the better it’s gotten.
June 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 pm
I usually get between 5 and 6 hours a night.
June 25th, 2010 at 8:08 am
I try and be in bed by 10:30, or at least hitting the showers then. I tend to get up about 6-6:30, but will typically wake up once in the neighborhood of 5 when the birds chirp and sun pops up.
Weekends, I’m up by 7 or 8 unless I’m up till 4. I just cannot sleep away the day when there is so much to do, and so much nice weather to enjoy.
