Dave gave me a call while I was waiting in the 3F temps for the 477 and asked if I was going to be home tonight. I answered in the affirmative and he showed up around 7:30 after Kim and I had finished dinner. He came bearing the best gift ever, an assortment of hand-picked stouts and porters from Blue Max in Burnsville. He knows I’m a huge stout fan and asked the staff at Blue Max what would make my day. What they came up with was nothing short of stellar.
While I’m not going to go into all of the details, the picture tells it all. Tonight I tried two of the beers, beginning with the Imperial Extra Double Stout and ending with the Rush River Lost Arrow porter ale. The Double Stout was fucking fantastic and was the first beer that I have tried which was purposefully aged and corked. The beer poured like cough syrup and tasted like heaven. I am no beer snob but this was some good shit. It’s 9% alcohol and packed quite the punch both in flavor, with heavy coffee notes, and buzz factor. I was impressed. Dave said, “I’d like to see you finish off a case of those in one sitting.” While I doubt I could handle that, it would be nice to try ;-)
The Rush River porter ale was more ale than porter and had a fruity finish. I wasn’t nearly as impressed with this beer but that was because I started the evening off with the heaviest beer I’ve ever had. If I had known I was going to go with the Rush River I would have had it first so my taste buds wouldn’t have been ruined. A beer out of River Falls, this was a nice local beer that I’d try again in the future for sure. While not my typical beer of choice, being that it was fairly light for a “porter”, it was certainly tasty. Mmm mmm, good.
There are a couple other beers for me to try, including some in very large bottles that will definitely require my full attention to finish ;-) It was a nice first gift for the holiday season and one that I certainly appreciated. If anyone else is interested, you can deliver beer to my home any day :)
Have you received any presents already this holiday season? If so, what were they? If you haven’t what are you hoping that Santa will bring you? What do you hope to get that you probably won’t? Comment on, I’d like to hear your wish list for 2008!

Barack Obama. Best. Present. EVER! ;)

Some drunk guy (who shall remain nameless) told me tonight “Barack is a shitt present.” Very articulate, no? Then followed up with “It would have been so much better to have Palin as president. The jokes would have been much better.” While I agree the jokes would have been better, I have to say the past 8 years have been a huge joke at the expense of the citizens of this country…frankly, I’m tired of laughing!! ;)

If “Mr. Whit” wants to get out of the hole he’s dug by, (among other things), letting the whole “Santa” thing slip in front of Mini-Whit, he’ll get me a dog. Or the promise of a dog, better yet, so that I can pick HER out.
I agree with Mrs. M. about Palin, but fear that she will not be fading into the woodwork anytime soon.

I think more reviews of beer are in order. :)

Nils, tonight I’ll be trying the Irish Cream Stout that Dave gave me. I’ll be sure to let you know how it is :-)

Mrs Whit (I presume) – I’m a huge advocate of http://www.petfinder.com …we got our girl, Stella, from there 4.5 years ago. Happy dog shopping! If ANYTHING could lessen the sting of finding out Santa Claus is merely a legend, it would be a dog.
