Out with my parents and Kim at Juleps on Hilton Head Island, SC. Originally we had reservations for 7 but 3 of our friends ended up dropping out because they “didn’t feel like” the food on their menu… I guess a varied and interesting menu (on paper) isn’t better than Arby’s or Starbucks.
Juleps’ location was less than spectacular. Located within the “Gallery of Shops”, it looks more like an afterthought from the outside. The inside, however, is warm and inviting. With deep reds and wood and lit with candles, it was a little dark towards the front but as we were seated the windows lit up the room and let us enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
A simple menu of “southren delights” was presented to us and we made our choices. I went with the fried oysters, swordfish special, and eventually ended with the Islander Key Lime Custard. Kim had fried green tomatoes, crab stuffed shrimp, and white chocolate cheesecake.
The service was friendly and well paced. Definitly southren hospitality :)
My dinner was very well done although a bit light on the sides. The swordfish was tender, tasty, and covered in lump crab meat. It came with four pieces of grilled asparagus and some garlic mashed potatoes. Yum.
My dessert was very good and was almost over the top sweet but somehow they managed to keep it just under the threshold :)
Their prices ranged in the $22 range and they certainly weren’t the best place I have ever eaten on the island but they were a nice change of pace.
