I have noticed that we are getting a ton more comments than ever before and I decided that it would be kinda nerdy but kinda cool to graph it out and see the differences. Well, it was surprising to say the least.

Just a quick fun fact, ~74% of all comments (totaling 3201) have come in 2008!

So, what changed in January to start the hockey stick comment growth? And do overall visits to the site show a similar increase, or did you just acquire some new comment-happy visitors?

Steve,
A couple of differences are probably at work here:
1. The switch to WordPress allowed for readers to comment more easily and not require me to force every comment into moderation to thwart spam. This was probably the #1 biggest reason.
2. While overall visits have remained close to historical numbers, the type of traffic has changed with a much larger percentage of return visitors (nearing 20%, up from single digits) coming back again and again.
3. More posts coming more frequently. It is possible that by the end of November or more likely, the beginning of December, I will have had more posts this year than in 2006 and 2007 combined. Obviously more posts gives more opportunity for commenting.
There could be other forces at work but I’d guess that those are the big ones.

You own everyone with your charts and graphs. If you could just add some color and maybe a graphics you would definitely be the tallest midget!

I have to think it’s a byproduct of the oodles of MNSpeak love you get.

While traffic goes up a bit (depending on the MNspeak link I generally get ~35 to ~100 visits) rarely do those visitors convert to comments.
