According to this Dakota County Criminal Complaint a West St. Paul man allegedly terrorized his mother with a butter knife and death threats in order to try and snap her out of a bout of depression.
From the complaint:
On June 13, 2013 at approximately 12:38 p.m., a West St. Paul Police Officer was dispatched to a residence located in West St. Paul, Dakota County, Minnesota to investigate an assault complaint. Upon arrival at the residence, the officer made contact with M.E. M.E. reported that at approximately midnight on June 13, 2013, her son Cody Allan England, grabbed her by the feet and pulled her on the bed. She explained England yelled, swore, and slapped her on the stomach. M.E. stated England also got on top of her, pinned her to the bed, and occasionally covered her mouth while she was yelling. M.E. reported that England retrieved a knife at some point during the incident. She stated England held the knife to her throat and he stated he “oughta slit [her] throat.” M.E. stated she later realized the knife was a butter knife. However, she explained that at the time England threatened her she believed the knife was not a butter knife and that the threat was a genuine threat.
England stated he had consumed some alcohol and came home to find M.E. in a depressed state. He stated he was infuriated by M.E.’s mood and explained she had been in an ongoing state of depression for a while now. M.E. explained he tried to speak with M.E. and then began yelling at her because he felt she was not listening to him. He stated M.E. began flailing her hands in his face and screaming in his ear so he threw her to the bed and got on top of her. England admitted he then pinned M.E. down and yelled at her. England admitted he occasionally placed his hand over M.E.’s mouth during the incident. He claimed he did this to get her to listen to him. England denied brandishing a knife during the incident. However, he admitted he told M.E. he should “finish her.” He admitted that in hindsight that the comment that he should “finish her” could have been construed as threatening to M.E.
This kid should win son of the year! I mean, what better way to solve depression in your family member than to get drunk and pin them down threatening their life! Man, if only more people thought of this method to bring their family members out of a depressed state we’d have less suicides and more fun loving people roaming the streets partying! This kid should receive a medal for his quick thinking and innovative research into the disease.
Seriously, this kid should be put away and learn what depression is really like. While those who are depressed do create stress for other family members, supportive actions and therapy are the best ways to handle the situation. Escalating it to the point of adding more negative stimulus is obviously the worst thing someone could do.
What do you think about this one? Can you believe this person seriously said he was annoyed with the depressive state of his mother and decided to threaten her life because of it? Have you personally had to deal with depression either directly or indirectly? Would this have made you even more depressed? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear what you have to say.
