On Monday night the Burnsville City Council met and discussed the 2010 budget. While I wasn’t there nor did I watch the stream, I was surfing the web and saw that Pioneer Press reporter Jessica Fleming said two things (here and here) which caught my eye:
Council now complaining about how press covered last budget session. Last I checked, I wrote what they said.
Now, I don’t really remember what the Pioneer Press said about the last budget session nor do I care to find out but I have to agree with Jessica Fleming that it’s highly unlikely that she did not report exactly what they had to say. The funny thing is that just a few years ago (and in some cases–like Thisweek still does) the newspapers would bend over backwards to reprint the bullshit that came directly from Mayor Kautz’s mouth as if it were gospel. During those golden times, Mayor Kautz would do anything and everything in her power to ensure that the newspapers were praised by her highness because they did what she said. Now that some in the media (mainly Fleming) are reporting what is actually going on there, the tables have turned and the mayor is trying the last thing she can think of to stop people from hearing the truth…
Mayor tells citizens to watch council stream, not read newspapers.
I’m sure you’re asking yourselves why I would state that the mayor is trying to stop people from hearing the truth by requesting that they watch the stream instead of reading the newspapers. In fact, I recommend nearly every single time I post something about any city council that you watch the fucking streams too! But Queen Kautz is banking on the fact that if she tells people not to read the newspapers and to instead watch the stream that they will get bored with the long and drawn out processes and not pay any attention and will only hear the words, “don’t read the newspapers!” Better to not have people watch at all than to read the summarized content!
Personally I’m a little surprised with the mayor. This is a real gamble. If people do end up watching the streams and paying attention to them, doesn’t she realize that people will eventually catch on to the fact that time and time again they’re proving how horrible they lead and that by watching the council streams and becoming more and more involved with local government happenings that people are going to vote against her? I can count at least three times when the mayor has tried to shut down discussion by pushing for votes on matters she wanted in her favor. Does she really want the public to see that she’s doing so? Does she really want them to see her flat out fucking lie through her teeth about how taxes will not be raised to pay for the PAC when in fact they are definitely going to be?
What do you think about Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz’s comments about the newspapers’ coverage of Burnsville city business? Do you think that she’s pissed off because they are actually telling the public what’s happening without bowing to her made-for-newspaper press releases? Maybe you believe that she really does think that what she’s doing is right and forgets that there are numerous archived videos which prove she’s a fucking lying bitch. But whatever it is that you think about the mayor’s comments, go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear what you have to say about this one!

“Mayor tells citizens to watch council stream, not read newspapers.”
I’ll agree, by this comment she is either going to let the public in on what’s really happening by watching the streams, /if/ in fact the media is spinning the truth of what’s really being said. If the media is reporting verbatim, then we now have two places to get accurate details on council matters… Well, three if you include LL. :)

Tried to watch the council meeting last night on Burnsville cable…….. NO AUDIO FOR THE ENTIRE MEETING !!!! This is NOT the first time that “technical problems” have been caused by incompetent city government. Look at the foul smelling, foul tasting city water issue. Look at the HOC “MONEY PIT” issue. OMG maybe I experienced CENSORSHIP last night!!

Yeah.. looks like a small time mayor of 3rd tier bedroom community with a 800Million dollar pink elephant doesn’t now how to handle a communication strategy. Shocking.

When’s the next mayoral election for Burnsville? Of course if she gets voted out, then half of this blogs content goes away. ;)

Two articles in today’s Strib . one regarding the recommendation by burnsville staffer Tom Hansen to drop membership in National League of Cities, saving the City $6,000 per year. In another article Burnsville WINS an award from the National League of Cities for the New surface water treatment plant. That IS the plant that is emanating the foul smelling/tasting water. HUM………maybe if we return the award we can get our $6,000 back.

2012 is the next mayor election in Burnsville. She just got re-elected last year. It’s gonna be a while.

Kudos to Jessica Fleming at the Pioneer Press for her unbiased, fact checked, reporting on the City of Burnsville. Frankly, while I understand that while newspapers include the occasional fluff piece, I appreciate fact based reporting with some in depth analysis as well. The truth of the matter is, its not always going to be “good news.” I appreciate that Jessica is willing to report the “bad news” too, and not just the information the City/Mayor wants to highlight. Hmm. Makes me think about subscribing…any good deals out there on the PiPress?
And the Mayor’s quote, well, it would just make me want to dig a little bit more and have Jessica ask even tougher questions.

I think the PiPress has a cheap e-edition option. A electronic copy of the daily paper for $60 a year…

So if you only pay attention to the streams, how exactly do you find out what is going on when the government decides it doesn’t need to be recorded. I.e. the work sessions in Farmington, or the Dakota County Commissioners holding their “informal” meetings?
It seems the idea from the Burnsville Mayor is to stop looking behind the curtain and just watch what you’re given to watch.
