Last week’s poll asked if you felt you were prepared for a tornado. While I finally completely and utterly exposed in our home when it comes to severe weather, especially with Dakota County’s absolutely useless warning system in effect, the vast majority of people said they do indeed feel safe. While I suppose we have less threat of severe weather in this area, I still cannot wait for the day when I no longer live in an area prone to tornadoes or where I at least have a basement to hide in.
This week’s poll comes courtesy of our service men and women dying for our country. While we like to celebrate their lives with a day off, lots of booze, and a ton of meat on the grill, we still should take time to reflect on all those who have served have given us all.
After spending all week in Los Angeles for work and eating some good food (I may write about it later this week in more detail), I decided to bring some of what I learned home to try here. One of the things I ate was a hamburger on a pretzel bun. While I’d had pretzel buns before, I never had one with a runny egg. The bread was able to soak up the burger grease and the runny egg and still stay together just fine. Excited at the prospect, I found a recipe for them and spent Saturday afternoon (it was raining after all) making them.
The burgers came out excellent. Grilled avocado, bacon (I made it in the oven but I had originally intended to grill it), Tillamook cheddar, and an over-easy egg on the homemade buns. They didn’t fall apart, they were very filling, and they added a really nice sweet contrasting flavor to the creaminess of the avocado and egg and the sharpness of the cheddar and smokiness of the bacon. Somehow everything tasted really good and was clearly distinct in its parts. I have to admit I was impressed with myself.
How about you? Aside from remembering our service men and women, how do you celebrate Memorial Day Weekend? Do you grill food? If so what kinds? Do you go camping or maybe watch parades? Whatever you have to say about this one vote on the sidebar and then comment on below. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or rea

We had a couple invites to BBQ bashes, but have instead chosen to stay home. We’ll be doing exciting things like laying mulch on the gardens, weeding the retaining wall and laundry. We have guests coming this week so there’s a lot of cleaning to do inside as well.
I imagine for dinner we’ll just throw whatever together.

I spent Friday night at a cookout with work friends. Yesterday was spent at a graduation party. Today I give platelets and will probably go to a movie since it is going to be gross hot and I don’t have a/c in yet. Hoping to get invited to a cookout again tomorrow, but will be happy doing nothing if it comes to that. Which means, a pretty normal weekend, just one day longer.
If I do go to a cookout tomorrow, I’ll bring brats from Seward Co-op. They have amazing meats, especially their in house sausages.

Looks like I will be able to grill again. Grill was acting up, decided it might be time to replace it. Instead, I actually got off my ass and took it apart to clean it. Believe it or not, they were right, spiders do build webs inside the burners! 3 of 4 of the burners were blocked. After cleaning them out, the grill is working great again. Maybe I’ll pay closer attention to it in the future.

We are grilling ribs on the charcoal grill today. Or trying to grill them! Hopefully they don’t turn into leather. Yesterday was a deep fryer day with homemade wontons and chicken wings….the hotter the better.
Happy Memorial Day to everyone out there! Didn’t sell any platelets but the air has been on.
