Headed out to the Dakota County Fairgrounds for the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. We watched some bagpipe players, Scottish dancers, sheep dog demonstrations, a falconry presentation, and ate overpriced food.
The Scottish dancers were interesting but after about 10 minutes I was bored. They all do the same dance over and over and all to the same music. There’s only so much bagpipe music a Polish/Irish guy can take.
The sheep dog demonstration was mildly interesting but in the end the sheep seemed to win. It was a bit hot so maybe the poor dog was dying in that furry coat of his.
The falconry presentation was put on by a representative from the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center. He had a couple different birds with him, none of which were terribly exicited to be tied to a glove and paraded around in front of a bunch of young kids and middle aged losers.
The food, to be quite honest, sucked. Not only was it overpriced, it wasn’t very Scottish. Sorry but doughnuts, chicken, and corn dogs are not acceptable fare at every outdoor event in Minnesota — save it for the State Fair, once a year is enough. To be fair, I didn’t have the meat pies and in order to take advantage of the “Scottish experience” I should have…
I did enjoy the stone tossing and weight throwing and also some of the reenactments… Perhaps if we had stayed for the Cabre tossing I would have enjoyed it even more.
Kimmy loved everything.
