Last week’s poll asked whether you preferred old-school books to e-books and if you were an e-book fan which you used. This provided a bunch of information to our favorite Chili’s eating, Coke drinking reader, Mrs. Marcos. I believe she’s currently looking at a Nook Color but being that she can’t make up her mind about anything, including giving up Coke for more than a couple weeks, who knows what she’s going to do. Thanks everyone for your input to help her (and many others I’m sure pick their future new tech gadget).
This week’s poll comes after a long evening out with friends last night following a too short of a set from local band 4onthefloor. After arriving home around 3 AM (I was DD again) I went to bed only to hear the cries from The Rooster’s bedroom at 6:45 AM. Ugh.
After a morning of grocery and meal planning and then 2.5 hours of grocery shopping at Valley Natural, Rainbow, and Cub we came home to eat a quick lunch of leftovers and had family nap time until 5 PM when The Rooster woke up again just in time for dinner.
I’m not much of an “in-bed” napper as I end up spending entirely too much time napping. While I know others think that the days are meant to be wasted through napping, I much prefer shorter naps (15 to 45 minutes) on the couch, under an afghan, while watching a terribly boring movie like Blade Runner (nothing puts me to sleep faster or better–I’ve never made it further than the first 15 minutes of that movie before I’m out like a light).
Do you nap? If so do you prefer in-bed naps or do you use the couch, recliner, or something else? How often do you nap (Daily? Weekly? Occasionally? Only on Thanksgiving?) Whatever you have to say about napping go ahead and vote and then comment on below.
After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I NEVER ever take naps, unless I am very sick. I stopped napping when I was 2 and never looked back, they make me feel worse and mess up my whole sleep pattern. Plus sleeping is a waste of time when you have too many other things to do!

While I do like the couch for a good nap here and there, they are few and far between since I don’t sit still.
As a side note, I do have this great ability to pretty much zonk out anywhere, and can tune out most distractions.. it’s pretty great..

I don’t nap often (like Kristi, it tends to only be when I am sick), but when I do it’s in my bed.

I’ve never been able to nap, so I would choose that in the poll, but it’s not an option.

Greg, that would be “Blondie is out of Dagwood’s league”.

Nothing better than a Saturday afternoon nap. 30 min on the sofa watching boring TV. Sunday foe some reason feels to precious to waste time napping. Pro bably because the monday clock is ticking.

My wife and youngest son are experts at napping. We bought a new couch about 8 years ago, a good couch, and it became the napping battle ground for both of them. I tried the nap route during high school when I had a particularly long night, and in the end determined naps and I don’t compute. I need a good 5 hours of sleep otherwise I’m just cranky.
Given all that, I’ve found that nothing works better than a 15 minute or so snooze outdoors in the shade when waiting for the call to staging. For the past few years I go drag racing on a couple weekends a year, typically camping over the Friday or Saturday night. At those types of events folks are partying until 4am both nights, thus getting sleep is rough. I drift off a couple times in the morning, under the trees in my chair. Ends up being just what the doctor ordered.

I nap. I usually nap every weekend day, if I can. Though lately I’ve been too busy. I also often nap when I work from home instead of taking a lunch break. I nap in my bed, with the lights off, with an alarm set. If I could take a nap everyday, I would. I would probably be a more productive employee if they let me nap at work.

In 1987, I took a nap.
The End.

I HATE napping – you forgot to include that choice!!!! IF I am able to actually fall asleep, I wake up feeling TERRIBLE. I stopped napping when I was six months old, according to my mother. I don’t even sleep when I’m sick. I’ve had hospital stays when I haven’t napped.
My son (22 years old), on the other hand, still naps frequently. He can decide that he has twenty extra minutes available, fall asleep instantly, and wake up refreshed and alert exactly when he needs to. What a talent.

You’re very wrong about sleep being a waste of time! It’s when your brain does its most creative work, and when it tries to solve the problems that you’ve kept on the back burner. Also, it’s the best weapon you have against the germs floating around out there.
I only nap occasionally, and it’s important not to nap too long, or you’ll wake up during the wrong sleep cycle. I’ve heard fifteen minutes is the optimum for nap time? Don’t know if that’s true.
More parents need give their kids regular naps. I can always tell when it’s lunch or naptime in the stores; the kids get whiny and mean. I can hear it in their voices, and I wonder why the parents can’t hear it, too. THEIR body clocks know that it’s time to sleep. Also, so many kids out there with rings under their eyes! I wonder how much their parents are paying in OTC medications and doctor visits, when regular sleep would probably do the trick. It’s the parents’ job, IMO, to follow a child’s needs, not the other way around. It’s not the child’s fault that life has gotten more hectic for the parents.
All this talk is making me sleepy ….

Michelle,
You had me for your first paragraph and third…but 15 minutes for a nap? Why bother?!
I nap every chance I get…literally. I can fall asleep in the car before we make it to Cedar Avenue (less than 1/2 mile). I can fall asleep on the bus during the 45 minute commute from Cedar Avenue Transit Station to the MOA. I nap almost every Saturday AND Sunday (in fact, I’m gearing up for a little afternoon snooze now). If I happen to be sick, well then I just triple my usual nap time.
This won’t be a big surprise to those of you that know me, but I’m a big slug. I love to sleep. Recipe for awesome nap? Bad weather, soft pajamas, a dog and/or cat, soft blanket…mmmmmzzzzzzzzzzz

Couch or chair for me. I don’t nap often. Actually, the only times I nap are when I sleep 4-5 hours and get to the end of the day and am toast. When that happens though I’m out cold for 2-4 hours and that screws up my night since I don’t nap until between 6 and 8 in the evening. I never take afternoon naps. This week I took a 2-hour nap one evening folded up sideways in a chair – and not a recliner either.

Although I know that later in my life I will regret napping (think of all i could have gotten DONE!), I love a good nap.

Nap report – this afternoon’s nap was sponsored by the couch, I believe Casper and Leo (cats) as well as Telly (dog) joined me. It was lovely.

in another life i got up at oh dark :30 to get to work by 0505. then after work off to babysit grandkidz for 2+30, then home. if i had a chance before the kidz woke up or got home, i could watch weather on mute and take a :15 or minute or so catnap to get the batteries recharged.
i never went ‘hard down’ in the afternoon as i would stay up later at night and have a hard time getting up again at oh dark :30 the next morning.
bottom line, short naps are good:)

Mrs. Marcos – My husband told me about the fifteen minutes a long time ago, and it does seem to work, when you have to have an “emergency nap.”
The CBS morning show did a piece on sleep this morning, and nap advice was 45 minutes max, and never after 3 p.m.
The focus of the piece was the disruptive effect of LED light in bedrooms: it emits a blue light that simulates daylight. The advice there was to get rid of your LED in your bedroom – computers, tv’s, etc. (Although I don’t know how I’ll talk my husband out of his alarm clock.) Also, not to use your electronics right before bedtime.

Wasn’t there a Seinfeld episode where Kramer was sleeping like 15 mins of every hour?
I have a huge beanbag chair in my basement that claims my sleep all too often.

“never after 3pm”
I can just see the havoc wreaked by my hour 5 class. “But Mr. Principal, I had to get my nap in before 3!!!”
