Last week was Spring Break for ISD196 which meant, for some odd reason, that they felt the need to not offer after school activities. So I was without swimming all last week (including Saturday). Because of the new job (which starts today — yes, a Wednesday, it’s not weird — no) I can no longer go at 6pm as my hours are 10 to 6… I switched my timeslot to MWF from 6:45 AM to 7:45 AM. I can only go on Mon and Wed because my hours on Friday at work are 7:30 to 3:30.
Anyway, so I get up early today, get ready and head out the door. I realize that I haven’t checked to see exactly where this swim is located so I double check — good thing — this one was supposed to be at Valley Middle School in Apple Valley (fairly close by!)
I head over there and arrive at 6:30. The instructions say to go in through the main entrance and through the cafeteria to the pool entrance. Easy enough. I find the non-descript door with the “Pool” tag. A girl’s locker room is next door but no Men’s locker room in sight. After a couple of minutes (and passing a large and conspicuous video camera stationed outside yet another girl’s locker room) I locate the men’s locker room. The door is open and the place is empty. The door to the pool from this locker room is also locked.
I wander around noticing more and more kids wandering the halls aimlessly. Weird that they would be at school early — even weirder that they are alone. I felt uncomfortable standing around with them there. It’s not cool being a fat, hairy, weirdo (with uncombed hair!) at a Middle School with no other adults around.
At 6:50 I packed it in and left. Not a single soul was waiting and the doors remained locked. Not cool!
I came home and double checked that I was at the right location, at the right time, and that they did have swimming today. Yup! Blah. I’ll have to give them a call and see what’s up. Maybe they moved it and didn’t update the website or maybe the lifeguard is getting paid for nothing and no one was there to be the wiser?
