Last week I didn’t author a poll, the first missed post in more years than I can count (probably 4+) because I just didn’t feel like it. No, it didn’t feel good to skip a day but it happened and I’m still working to ensure that I don’t do it again. So, here I am back at it again at 6:19 AM on a Sunday morning before we take a long day trip, fun!
This week’s poll comes after I fed The Rooster some oatmeal and he wasn’t having it. After feeding the rest of the bowl to him myself, The Wife pointed out that I simply was not making it correctly. Apparently the way I ate it growing up, which may have been why I hated it, was that it was fairly runny. The way that The Rooster usually eats it is apparently “hard”. I apologized for not knowing how to make oatmeal in The Wife’s way and went about my day.
The question for you today is, if you like oatmeal at all (yuck), do you prefer to eat it watery or thick? Did you eat it one way and later change to a different method? Are you like me and ate it as a kid but avoid it at all costs now that you’re an adult (heck, I hate all cereal)? What’s your favorite way to make oatmeal? Do you do instant or do you make it from scratch? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below as I’d love to hear what you have to say.

You never ate oatmeal as a kid. You hated it, instead you would eat farina a favorite of your father’s family. Therefore, you might remember eating something runny.

The only oatmeal I ate as a kid, and it was only occassionally in the winter, was the packets of quick, sweetened oatmeal. I didn’t really enjoy it but I ate it. Now I avoid those packets and regular, grown up oatmeal at all costs. The only oatmeal I’ve made was a steel cut oatmeal dish where it was pressed into a baking pan and then when set, seared and served with a fruit chutney.

I won’t be surprised if the majority of comments are similar to what Kris said. It seems like the only way people “enjoy” oatmeal is when it has a pile of added sweetness, like brown sugar, sugar sugar or fruit. It is because oatmeal is terrible, runny or whatever way you eat it, and it should be banned as a food forever along with green tea and anything from Rusty Taco.

I can eat the Quaker Oats instant, mainly the apples & cinnamon flavor, but I don’t very often. I will do Cream of Wheat, which I enjoy with a little bit of sugar & cinnamon as well as half & half. Yummy!

By the way, the poll is still the old about about infomercials.

I think I have a texture issue with oatmeal and can only eat a small amount, whether instant or steel cut. I know this is more like dessert, but I enjoy making baked oatmeal on occasion. It transforms it into a texture I can handle.

I never ate oatmeal as a kid and only started eating it a few years ago. I actually like it. Not hard, not runny, somewhere in between.

I keep oatmeal packets in my desk at work and eat it fairly regularly. I make oatmeal at home occasionally and prefer Steel Cut at home. A little maple syrup and some dried fruit and it is a really nice breakfast. At home I make it fairly thick, but I like the packets to be a little thinner, more like a soup.

I love oatmeal. I make it thick, not runny. Steel cut from the co-op, McCanns, or or Bob’s. I like it especially with dried fruits, particularly cranberries or apricots, and slivered almonds or broken walnuts. Fresh berries or peaches are good too. The only time I might put a little brown sugar or milk on it is when I have it with fresh fruit.
I also most other hot cereals. It’s a taste I developed later in life; did not like anything but farina as a kid and especially hated then and still hate the packaged overly sweet stuff like Malt o Meal.

Try McCann’s five minute oatmeal (from Costco) with honey and bananas. It will change your mind about oatmeal.

I’ve always liked oatmeal as long as it’s really thick (nearly cement-like) and rocket hot. I can eat it unsweetened, but I do like a bit of half and half, a sprinkle of brown sugar (or honey if there’s no brown sugar), and a shake of cinnamon. Sometimes I’ll get crazy and throw some banana slices in there. I really like steel cut oatmeal, but it, how should I put this delicately, makes me gassier than a politician. So I stick to the Old Fashioned oats.

My mother fucked up oatmeal so bad that I hated it my whole life. She made it too watery and served it in a dinner plate with powdered sugar on it, looked like a plate of hummus which is probably what she thought it was.
Lame.
In my adult years I had a bowl at the Good Earth in Los Gatos CA. Never knew it could be that good. Now it’s one of my favorites. I prefer it not runny, steel cut and with brown sugar and dried cranberries.
Mmmmm Oatmeal.

Oatmeal is a regular at my place. I like it especially on these cold days.
Grew up with the Instant Oatmeal made running with plenty of brown sugar.
A few years ago I was introduced to steel cut oats at work. I’m not sure you really can make these running. The texture is great though.
My wife showed me that you can make “hard” oats at home a couple years ago. Since then I’ve never gone back to running oats.
The number of options with oatmeal toppings is amazing. Basically and fruit or nut will mix well. Sometimes Coconut and brown sugar. Sometimes banana and peanut butter. Pecan and walnuts work too. Strawberries and half-and-half (not sure the last time we had cream that wasn’t earmarked for something.)

Made with milk, not water. On the stove, not in a microwave. Consistency of a lumpy pudding. Sugar, a dash of nutmeg, and a drizzle of cream or half-and-half over the top.

As I type this, I have a pot of steel cut oats cooking on the stove. I HATED oatmeal and could never cook it properly for the men in the house without screwing it up. Finally, I was at a restaurant last year and tried steel cut oats. It was a revelation. It had texture and flavor that is completely lacking in rolled oats. I use Alton Brown’s technique, except I use all regular milk, not buttermilk and I add one diced Granny Smith apple, a teaspoon of vanilla and a 1/4 tsp of nutmeg. It’s amazing, and just as good-if not better-the second day. We top it with craisins and pecans.

Still no oatmeal poll. Oh well. Not a big fan of the stuff, does pretty well in cookies for sure. Probably become something i take a look at when I get much older and have trouble eating solid foods.

Love it. Eat it daily. Growing up, my mom would always make oatmeal, cream of wheat, or malt-o-meal. I think oatmeal was my favorite because anything with accidental lumps in it made me gag. Also she would top it with a little butter and brown sugar so it really was eating candy for breakfast.
Now I grab a handful of old-fashioned oats and throw it in a bowl, sprinkle it with salt (this is key), fill the bowl with water just to cover the oats, and microwave for 2 minutes. Top with Greek yogurt and, of course, whatever jam happens to be in the fridge.

Poll added.

I don’t understand how people can eat Cream of Wheat. It’s got the texture of wet sand. Blargh.
February 18th, 2013 at 11:22 pm
I like oatmeal when it’s good quality and prepared well (i.e. not runny and not the stuff that comes in packets), particularly with fruit, nuts, or other toppings on it.
I’m not a fan of Cream of Wheat, though, or grits, for that matter.

Whoever voted ‘yuck’, you’re not alone.
Sorry boatmeal, though you agree with my stomach, I hate you mixed with water or milk, resulting in a congealed blob that sits in my stomach like a rock. I will grind you up to make my bread though!

I like rolled oatmeal with raisins and a little brown sugar or real maple syrup in them. I don’t like the mix to be too solid, and if it is, I’ll thin it out with some milk. I also like make ahead refrigerator oatmeal with raspberries, vanilla extract, almond milk, and some Greek yogurt. Yum!

Tried to send you a picture of my oatmeal at La Peep in San Antonio but misspelt your twitter account name! Think Texas huge! Cinnamon sprinkled all over the edge of the bowl, apples in the middle and accompanied by a condiment platter of raisins, cream and brown sugar. yum!! My only complaint is that of most restaurant food, the portion was too much.

Today I had a bowl of Steelcut Oatmeal that was amazing. The steelcut oats were lightly toasted in unsalted butter, then I added the water and a bit of sea salt. They simmered for about 25 minutes, then I added some heavy cream and simmered for a few more minutes. Served with (real) maple syrup and a few broken pecans, it was amazingly good.
