Last week’s poll asked whether you were staying at home or going away for vacation this year. The majority of you, even though the economy is still tanked and ‘staycations’ are now becoming more popular, are heading out-of-town. However, the biggest surprise for me were the number of people who consider any time away from home/work a ‘vacation’.
This week’s poll comes after I read this article in the MSP Business Journal about Supervalu’s new rules regarding bagging groceries. Instead of bagging heavy items in plastic, they’re training staff to keep them out of bags and place them in the cart separate in, “an effort to save millions of dollars a year on bag costs.”
The most surprising thing here is the statement that they’re training their staff to do something with bagging of groceries at all. While I know that Supervalu owns more than just Cub, I am still to this day surprised that Cub doesn’t bag your groceries for you. While bagging my own isn’t a huge deal, I hope they realize that I’m in no way going to conserve their bags for them–especially when I’m in need of a restocked dog poop pickup bag stash.
But the real question here is do you use paper or plastic when you shop? Do you use one solely over the other or do you do a mix depending on the items or the need for the bags at home? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on and then vote on the sidebar. After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

Paper. Always paper..I hate plastic bags unless I’m only buying a few things.

We do most refrigerated items in plastic and everything else in paper. Reuse the plastic bags for lunches before recycling and the paper winds up sorting the recycling (have to separate in Minneapolis).

reusable. unless we need to restock the dog poop supply, then plastic.

I pretty much use plastic so I can have cat poop bags. Mr Marcos prefers paper for heavier items. If he’s shopping and doing the bagging, he can use whatever he likes! :)

Paper if I have a lot of groceries, but usually plastic if I just have a few things. If I only am getting one or two things, I will usually tell them I don’t need a bag.

Resuable if I remember (5 cent discount at Target), otherwise paper.

I usually remember my reusable bags. But I have to keep paper bags on hand to recycle, so I generally need to make sure I get at least three paper bags every two weeks for the recycling. Occasionally I get a plastic bag, but that’s often because the Lunds in NE almost always does plastic bags for everyone.
But the SuperValu by my house is crazy when it comes to bags. The joke is always, “did you get more food items or more bags?” They only put a couple items in each bag, and each bag consists of paper bag inside TWO plastic bags. If you bought a chicken, a pepper and a half gallon of milk, you would get at least two bags.

I try to remember my reusable bags, but, like Sank, I am old and the memory ain’t what it used to be. When given a choice. I prefer paper all the way. After all, we can plant new trees, but we can’t grow any new dinosaurs (Jurassic Park aside). I do grab the occasional plastic bag for the girls’ cat box duties, but I hate that they can’t stand up by themselves in the trunk.

If you’re looking for free dog poop bags, Menards often has the “Go Green” brand for free after rebate, limit 10 boxes (a box is 20 bags so you can get 200). Rebate is in the form of a merchandise credit check. I have several hundred stocked up.
At the grocery store I go paper for most things, but plastic for produce, frozen veggies or frozen juices.
I save the paper bags and use them for fire starters in our bonfire pit, or book covers for the kids.

Oh, and I prefer to bag my own groceries.

A few weeks ago I would have said plastic for restocking kitty poop bags, but now that I’m in NE I need paper for recycling.

Reuseable bags. We also have a supply of paper bags from Target that we reuse when we go back. We do use plastic bags to wrap meat so it doesn’t leak into our reuseable bags.

Plastic or reusable when we remember (like for a SAMS’s run) – Nice to have the plastic baggies for the small trash cans in bedrooms and bathrooms around the house, and I use them in the garage for things as well..
Not really the best for the enviro, but better than using a 50gallon hefty bag for your aforementioned cat poop..

Reusable if I remember to bring them. Otherwise whatever the person bagging the groceries decides to use. The paper bags get reused for the recycling or the plastic bags get reused for bringing a lunch to work, cleaning the litter box, or picking up dog poo.

We use both paper and plastic depending on what we are bagging. We have one of the cardboard boxes you can get at Cub to box your groceries in but I never seem to remember it when I go. It really is a lot easier to put the heavy items in those boxes so I should work harder to remember…

Usually paper, but sometimes plastic if I just have a few items. I shop for groceries at various places–Target they always ask ‘Is plastic OK?’ and I reply I want paper and they usually proceed to put everything in one paper bag that is stuffed to the top. They must have been told to conserve paper bags… At Kowalski’s, they carefully pack the items into almost too many paper bags..(and carry them out to the car for me). I don’t mind bagging my own at Cub–I can get everything sorted how I like it to make it easier to put away when I get home. At Rainbow, you end up with a conglomerate of paper and plastic bags, each with a couple of items in them. I do have some reuseable bags, but usually forget those in the car when I go in! Can’t seem to remeber to bring them! I buy dog poop bags at the dollar store–they are very thin so would not recommend them if you have a big dog :-)

We usually use our reusables, unless we’re out of paper bags for recycling in Minneapolis (which is rare since my mom, out in Savage, saves her paper bags for us, as well as plastic for dog poo!).
April 12th, 2011 at 1:18 pm
Paper or plastic? Neither! Reusables all the way!
As for having my groceries bagged for me, it depends on the store. Byerly’s/Lunds has always done a great job of making sure their baggers understand how to bag groceries (no, the fresh mushrooms do not belong under the canned goods), that’s not always the case. When it’s not the case, I’d much rather bag my own.
