Out at Rascal’s Apple Valley Bar and Grill with Kimmy. We were looking for something a little different tonight and while we had seen this place numerous times we had never ventured inside.
A warm and vibrant fire was burning in the fireplace and two staff members were ready to take us to our table in the dining room. We passed the spacious bar and noticed plenty of happy faces playing darts, Golden Tee, and watching one of the numerous TVs.
We sat down and began to peruse the varied and lengthy menu. Most of their entrees for dinners were in the $11 to $15 range including my choice of the $14.95 8 oz filet mignon! Kim ordered a half rack of ribs. She was torn between those and a blue-burger. Tough choices! :)
We started off with their Maryland Crab Cake dip for an appetizer. I couldn’t tell if it was the tortilla chips or the dip but something was VERY salty. Kim originally said she couldn’t taste the crab and we certainly couldn’t see it but towards the last bits of dip it finally revealed itself. I have to admit that it was quite tasty.
The meals came out soon after we finished the appetizer and came loaded with food. They did not skimp on the sides here! The “dinner vegetables” were piled high alongside the double scoops of garlic mashed potatoes. The filet mignon was a bit overcooked and thus lost some of its tenderness but was decent overall.
Kim’s ribs were meaty and slathered in a spicy but brown sugary sauce that was quite excellent IMHO. It sure beat out the “competitors” and “champions” at this past summer’s Rockin’ Ribfest in St. Paul.
My sole “complaint” lies not with the food but with the overpowered P.A. system they have to alert the wait staff to grab ready orders for serving. If that was only a couple notches lower, the quiet and pleasant ambiance would have been maintained and would have really made it 100% enjoyable.
If you’re looking for some really excellent and different suburban dinner fare for decent prices ($40 for our meal before tip) served by friendly and excellent servers, I *highly* suggest trying Rascal’s Apple Valley Bar and Grill located at 7721 147th St W in Apple Valley.

Rascal’s offers *free* bar games on Monday nights from 9 until 11pm.
Golden Tee, SuperStrike, darts, jukebox, Big Buck Hunter! I’ve never been anywhere that offers its customers free money but there they were begging us to take cash.
There was $15 in the Golden Tee machine. I think that was enough :)

We tried Rascals because we had heard it has good food and is a family-run establishment. I was surprised at the lack of ambience. The building was like an open warehouse; it reminded me of a Wal-Mart store. We went on a Monday because on Mondays Rascal’s has a burger and fries special for $4.99. Actually, the sign at the entrance says the $4.99 special is for a burger and one side. So my wife had a burger and coleslaw. We found out that there is an extra charge if anything is added to the burger. My wife had lettuce and tomato, which was 50¢. We were told that adding bacon is $1; I cannot remember what was the added charge for cheese. I assume that an onion slice would cost something extra — maybe 50¢. I added a side of coleslaw for $1. But I did not get as many fries as my son and his wife did. I figured that they put the little bowl on slaw on the plate with the burger and there wasn’t much room left for a lot of fries. Our two young granddaughters split an order of chicken fingers for $4.75. Our son asked for a serving of barbecue sauce to go with the children’s chicken. It turned out that there was a charge of 50¢ for that. I found that out when the bill came and I inquired as to what Misc. Ram. for 50¢ was. I understand that “Misc.” is miscellaneous. But what is “Ram.”? I did not pursue the matter.

AM: “Ram.” likely stands for ramekin, which is the name for the little dish they put the sauce/side in. I could be wrong, but that’s what I’m thinking.

The additional charges sound a bit, ‘cheesy’ and probably will defeat the purpose of their special. If you get everything on the burger, it may be more expensive than the regular price! I don’t like going to places that nickel and dime.
We have been to Rascal’s once before and thought it was alright. We could tell it is a place with many regulars. I actually liked the AV Legion better than Rascal’s.

sparksals, talk about a place with a lot of regulars…
Anyway, yeah they do nickle and dime you a bit even if it’s not a special offering however I’m less likely to care about the extra cost at a $4.99 special than on a general night. But complaining about $1 for bacon? Really?

I can see a buck for bacon – that is pretty typical. I think charges for toppings is too much. If I have my typical ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions, that adds $2 to $7. IT’s still cheap, but those who like everything, say lettuce, tomato, mayo brings it to $8.50. No deal in that at all. It just seems dishonest to charge for all the sides under a guise of a $4.99 deal.
Speaking of the Legion – DH and I went there a couple weeks ago to honour my dad as he died in August and it was his first birthday after losing him. He spent many a time in the Royal Canadian Legion and I thought that would be the most fitting place to honour him.
Anyway, we had a fabulous meal there, for very little money. All told, we shared two pitchers of beer… yeah, I was hammered. lol We both had their prime rib sandwich which was fab and I think the bill was something like $30. Good home cooking there and the service was really good. Friendly people to chat with at the bar too. My husband is a vet and hasn’t been able to connect with the Rosemount VFW.

My advice to Rascal’s:
Charge a fair price for a loaded burger and stop being so tacky. You’re shooting yourselves in the foot.
