From the Star Tribune’s South Metro Police Blotter:
If you’re going to get ticketed for DUI at 16, you better do it right:
Traffic. After a vehicle accident at 4428 W. 133rd St., one of the drivers, a 16-year-old Savage boy, was cited for open bottle, underage drinking and driving, reckless driving and driving without a license.
Awww, he likes her:
Fight. A 12-year-old boy from Savage and a 13-year-old girl from Burnsville were involved in a fight at Eagle Ridge Junior High School, 13955 Glendale Road.
First, didn’t anyone ever teach this 12 year old kid that hitting girls isn’t something you do? Second, why is this even in the police blotter? What is it about schools these days that they can’t handle this sort of stuff themselves?
Yeah, yeah, they may have some sort of liaison officer but why? It’s a junior high school serving grades 7 to 9. If the cops need to be called for a 6th grade boy fighting with a girl in 7th grade, then something is seriously wrong with the world, right? Aren’t there better things we should be spending our tax dollars on than sending the cops in over a fight caused by snapped bras and raging hormones? What do you think?

Bill, you just made a scary strong argument for home school. Just saying…

HAHAHA
Im sorry but that picture is hillarious

Blaine, you are going to hell for laughing at that photo.
And, so am I. =:-D
January 27th, 2010 at 10:56 am
Guess I’m joining jorn and Blaine then. It was tough to read the rest of the post after starting with that photo! I don’t know where you got it Bill but it’s excellent stuff.

If teachers and schools discipline students these days, they get railed by parents for this that or the other thing.. I think it’s just easier to get the police involved. – On one side, it’s overkill, but it may also ward off future altercations by the young students if that first experience with the police made them cry.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Unreal. Where’d you get that photo from Bill?
Kids are a product of their environment. Bad parenting and lack of involvement from the parents with the kids. My guess is the boy that hit the girl, has seen his mom slapped around a few times by the old man. Unfortunate.

I took the photo, thus the lack of attribution.

What’d you say to make her cry?

You didn’t give her that black eye did you? I am a mandated reporter!
January 27th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Schools take a hands-off approach to discipline these days. Teachers can’t even look cross-ways at students any more without getting reported.
January 27th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
When I was younger (grade school) we went to a private church school and the parents all signed off on a release that allowed the pastor to spank us if we were bad, ah yes, the good ole’ days!

Sister Margaret used to pull me out of my chair by my ear lobe in Jr. High when I was screwing around.

That report isn’t very descriptive. I could just be making this up in my head–but I think that there was already a full time cop on duty at Nicollet Jr. High in Burnsville when I went there 16 years ago. Even if there wasn’t one on staff, they visited often. We had random drug/weapon checks. There was definitely a FT cop + security guards at Burnsville High School when I was there 94-97. Even all the way back then I can recall some pretty violent fights (where people went to the hospital). Which then sometimes became assault charges (my brother was hauled out of there with a concussion once!).
I am totally in favor of giving the teachers/staff more power to discipline kids that are out of control. And I totally believe that kids are out of control in the first place because their parents don’t discipline them. But, based on what I know about B’ville schools, I’m not sure that I can argue against calling the cops.
Final thoughts: Won’t that boy be ruthlessly mocked for fighting with a girl? If she didn’t kick his ass, somebody else might just do it on principle!
January 27th, 2010 at 1:51 pm
One of the first lessons I will teach my son, right AFTER don’t piss all over my bathroom, just hit the big hole, will be that you CAN NOT win a fight with a girl. If you kick her ass, you will be branded as a little asshole who beats on girls and deservedly get you ass kicked by others. If you get your ass kicked by her, you will be branded as the little asshole who got his ass kicked by a girl and deservedly get your ass kicked by others. In either event, I will be the first in line to kick your ass. ‘Nuff said.
As for the picture, cute kid, she looks like the mouthy sort and probably had it coming.

“I took the photo, thus the lack of attribution.”
That explains it all. We need to ensure this poor girl receives counseling and that Bill is invoiced for these services.

At that age, the difference between boys and girls is often a little weird, at least in the minds of kids that age. And I can recall girls when I was that age that gave me plenty of reason to give them a smack, just as hard as my male buddies. Kids at that age can be pretty cruel.
That said, it is not the schools fault it happens. If they have an officer on duty it is going to be because that school has actually had problems in the past. Parents are solely to blame for their child’s behavior, even more so when they are young teens. While we don’t have the details, my guess is both kids involved in the fight have some issues with parents.
For that boy and his DUI. His insurance is going to be ridiculously expensive! It would be interesting to know more about his parents. My guess is they haven’t been providing enough oversight for their kid.

Hmmm, that is strange, that is the address I send my property taxes to, yet every invoice sent to that address remains unpaid or are returned stamped “insufficient funds”.

On my daughter’s first day of student teaching on Monday, there was a fight in the classroom between two high school girls. Both were throwing punches and pulling hair. The teacher that she is working with stepped in between and ended up being on the receiving end of some punches. My daughter had to call and get some security. The female teacher ended up with a broken jaw and is pressing assault charges. What a great way to start teaching! This happened in Duluth in case anyone was wondering.

Savage PD has two School Resource Officers (SRO’s). From what I recall from the Citizen’s Police Academy I was in two years ago, one is assigned to Prior Lake High School and the other one splits his time up between the remaining schools, Eagle Ridge JH being the one with the most need for an SRO.

I think it’s clear you haven’t been in a middle school for awhile, at least on a regular basis. When I was in a fourth grade classroom I had to physically restrain kids from leaping on each other.
I have a scar on my arm from restraining a student from throwing punches earlier this year.
I also think it’s important to note that these kids are a rarity, and in general, middle schoolers are highly misrepresented and misunderstood. Out of my 149 students, I would say that 140 of them are good, achieving, respectful, fun to teach students who are honestly just trying to survive an incredible emotional and hormonal time. 6 are “bad” kids who screw around in class seeking attention and 3 are hard-core, sometimes frightening, I wouldn’t want them to know where I live because if I fail them they will kill me in my sleep, students. These are also the ones it’s hardest to discipline because a: they don’t care and they are the first ones to bring a lawsuit if a teacher looks at them the wrong way.
Giving teachers the “ability” to use physical discipline likely wouldn’t do much good for these students because a large percentage of the time, they’re already getting smacked around at home so it’s just one more adult beating them down.
Slightly off topic, sorry.
My guess is the cops weren’t called so much as the officer assigned to duty there was called in.
