According to this article in the Savage Pacer, the City of Savage recently received a $150,000 gift from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community which could be used for almost anything except tax relief. The City has come up with a few ideas, none of which are all that excited or interesting. Seriously, if this is the best the City can do, they have a lot of work ahead of them.
From the article:
The Council weeded out the splash park, upgrades to the Warren Butler baseball field and the trail along County Road 27 providing access to Cleary Lake Park because of the price tags. They also nixed both the Bluff Trail project because of uncertainties related to the Keystone Communities development and the trail system around the indoor sports dome because the city does not currently own that land.
Additional information on the remaining projects will be brought back to the council at a future work session.
The list includes items like: Statue or bust of M.W. Savage placed somewhere on City Campus ($30,000-$75,000); McColl Pond Fountain ($30,000-$50,000); and entrance signage and landscaping in downtown Savage ($40,000-$75,000) similar to what Burnsville considered wasting too much money on recently.
Seriously? A Statue or bust of M.W. Savage for $75,000? or a fountain? What is this, SimCity 2000? You get a gift from the game and you need to choose the most ridiculous way to utilize the money which has absolutely no benefit to the city? How many residents are going to care at all about a statue or a bust of a dead person? How many people really care about entrance signs to the city (let me help you here: NO ONE AT ALL). Some of the best ideas were the ones which were ignored at the outset, ugh.
What do you think a city receiving $150,000 should do with the money? Should they erect statues or build fountains or should they be looking to spend that money on something worthwhile? Do you like the idea floated about expanding the public library’s computer lab or do you think that should be a county function only? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and comment on as I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I hope some citizens in Savage wake up and hear this, it would be pretty sad to waste $150,000 on those choices.
How about build a fountain that is part of a splash park?

What was funny (and by “funny” I mean typically infuriating) about the article was how they are coming up with all these ideas themselves, debating them, deciding what they think is best, moving forward with plans…..and THEN….
In other words, invite them to see the project they already committed to and decided they are going to cram down their throats whether they like it or not.

Sounds a lot like how Burnsville settled on a new City logo. (Ignore the talent in your own city, hire a guy from somewhere else — with no competitive bidding process — to create a few “finalist” logos, decide on one, and reveal it to the public while simultaneously revealing the fact that there is a process going on AT ALL).

I agree with Alan, some sort of a playground/splash park would be a way better idea than some useless statue.

How about a small business stimulous package? Or an after-school jobs program for teens? Or an upgraded community safety program? New/better streetlights? Just off the top of my head….

Not shocking! Always easier to use someone else’s money for stupid things!
