1. Valley Natural Foods has a couple of interesting articles for you to read. Start out with the fact that it’s almost local apple time and then continue with an article about some fantastic bleu cheese out of Faribault.
Speaking of apples, for those of you Honeycrisp fans, there may be a serious new contender coming up in the next few years called SweeTango. I’m not an apple fan but my wife is. But the thought of some apples and cheese is definitely making my mouth water.
2. Thisweek reports that Eagan is looking to change their mowing ordinance as more and more individuals and companies don’t want to spend the money on gas/time all while claiming it’s “earth friendly”.
3. Lifehacker shares a link to New York Times Restaurant critic Frank Bruni’s suggestions on what not to order at fancy restaurants (anything with truffle oil–something I agree with).
4. Not quite sure where this photo was taken but the caption is the relevant part. I wonder if Liz is behind door #1?
5. The Star Tribune has a great article on making the transition to eating more local foods easier on you and your wallet.
6. Thisweek has a great video tour of the new Apple Valley Senior Center (no, I will not call it whatever the City Council decided its name should be).
7. In addition, Jeff Achen from Thisweek (and the one who hosts their weekly The Show) has asked me to pass along their upcoming guest list and the call for questions we would like answered. So give ‘em what you got people!
8. If you aren’t following The Heavy Table, you really need to start especially following their awesome article on what is great at the 2009 Minnesota State Fair.
That’s all I have for this week’s South Metro News Roundup. I wonder what your thoughts are on the whole “earth friendly” lawn mowing ordinance. Is this really something that should be changed permanently when it may just really be due to economic downturn (i.e. a fad)? I’d also really like to hear what questions you have for upcoming guests on The Show so get working and let’s hear what you have to say!

Re: #3. Curious about the truffle oil. Is his issue the inferiority to just using the truffle itself? It’s an aggressive flavor, but I happen to love it.
Another item you should consider for the weekly roundup: http://www.startribune.com/yourvoices/55250517.html
There’s a storm brewing about restaurants responsibility regarding food allergens. Interesting read.
The “earth friendly” mowing ordinance sounds like a slippery slope that will lead to lazy homeowners letting their place go all to hell while claiming they are “green”.

No, it’s because they are using it on items that they want to make more expensive by adding truffle oil unnecessarily.

I LOVE apples and cheddar. It’s actually the only way I’ll typically eat cheddar.

I think changing the ordinance is a good idea, but they’ll need to be careful with how its worded. The amount of work and resources needed to maintain lawns can be ridiculous. It’s definitely possible to let lawns be more natural and still keep them looking good, but I agree that some people might unfortunately interpret it as meaning they don’t have to care.

I had the “Winter Blues” cheese they made last Winter with the Bleu cheese and Summit Winterfest…it was very good. I ate half of the package with a co-worker, and the other half was stuffed into Olives for Martinis.

I agree that the lawn ordinance should be changed, but I can see where it could be an issue with residential lawns. If my neighbor decided to mow his lawn twice a year that would be an issue.
I think we will see more and more of this kind of thing over time. As our cities get bigger and bigger and clean water becomes more and more scarce, we will probably have no choice but to stop wasting so much water. I just got our water bill and we used as much water in the last quarter as we do for the rest of the entire year. I love green, but that’s pretty bad.
