2. Lifehacker helps out all those camera toting foodies and links us to a CHOW topic about how to politely take photos of your food.
3. The MNSun gives us a schedule of upcoming free concerts in Apple Valley’s Kelley Park.
From the article: The Apple Music Festival hosted by the Apple Valley Arts Foundation is free. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, blankets and chairs.
4. Hastings follows in the footsteps of Burnsville and is considering allowing chickens in residential neighborhoods.
5. Burnsville to get a movie studio?
According to KSTP (video above), a 79 year old “movie pioneer” and three washed up individuals who I have never heard of (a stunt man, a former soap opera star, and Tawnja Zahradka who has the greatest website ever) are looking to raise $10 million to bring the movies to Burnsville. According to the video the old Menard’s along MN-13 would become a movie studio, acting school, stunt school, museum, and entertainment venue. Wow, that’s a mouthful and something which I find almost too good to be true.
Why don’t I believe this group of four unknowns? Well, that’s because their video press release (now MIA) seemed little more than a lame attempt to raise capital so that they don’t end up like Burnsville’s other recent failed attempt to bring business into the blighted area along MN-13 whose $27 million baseball stadium does not appear to be happening any time soon–if ever.
What do you think about the prospects of Burnsville becoming the hotbed of movie and TV activity behind the West and East coasts? Do you think that this was nothing more than a publicity stunt to attempt and get money for their venture or do you believe that this might really and actually happen? Maybe this will attract all the big stars to Burnsville’s many white tablecloth restaurants in the HOC! What do you think?
I had lunch backed up to study hall on either side of it (well a few days a week depending on whether I had gym or not) but we weren’t permitted to leave the “campus” even though we did sometimes anyway. Mmm taco bell. Did any of you have this type of option? Do you think that it’s something that should be eliminated and do you believe it’ll help academic rigor?
7. According to Thisweek, the MVTA loses even more funding and is being forced to dip into its reserves to cover their expenses. Guess that new $20 million transit station and those BRT buses weren’t such a good idea afterall eh?
Now where’s my fucking data eh Bev?
8. An absolutely beautiful photo of a grilled peach salad with chorizo and torn buffalo mozzarella topped with yummy balsamic and fresh herbs.
I have been following this photographer’s work for months (maybe over a year, dunno) and love everything she comes up with. Stunning stuff really.
9. A beautiful shot of an old shed along 190th in Lakeville between Cedar and Flagstaff.
10. An excellent topic started by a Chowhound about wanting to save Ramy’s in Apple Valley. I saw it as soon as it came up in my RSS reader but The Heavy Table also pimped it out during one of their recent Churn posts as well.
I am hoping to head over there for lunch around noon today. If anyone is interested in joining me stop in!

So the most important questions for today’s roundup are what you think about the prospects of a movie studio in Burnsville actually coming true and what your feelings are about the elimination of Burnsville’s ‘senior lunch’ and if it will actually help with upping academic rigor. So whatever you feel about any of the topics above and especially the two I have singled out, go ahead and comment on as it’ll be great to hear what others have to say!

I just went to Ramy’s for lunch. They have a $3.50 lunch special daily which is two slices and a pop. Let me tell you, I have never been so very excited about pizza in the South Metro before but I have been telling anyone and everyone who will listen that this is some damn good pizza.
Finally, Apple Valley has NY Style pizza by the slice! Get out there now and eat!

Hi Bill,
I’ve been reading your blog for a little while and was hoping to rouse a bit more controversy than simply an honorable mention.
In any case, I’m working on a follow-up article for some national blogs. I greatly appreciate what Jeff Achen is doing to improve the declining state of local journalism, but I also didn’t really get enough time discussing health care to really make my case. Someone needs to.
Here’s a sneak peek at my first draft:

Why is it every time some half baked out there idea is proposed it’s always in Burnsville???
June 27th, 2009 at 6:15 am
Because Burnsville is so business-friendly! [cough, cough]

I WANT that recipe for the grilled peach salad. Can that be provided?

A movie studio won’t bring more movie business to Minnesota. Other states offer much better financial incentives for filming in them.

if the ‘movie studio’ would bring in bubbles from his secluded sanctuary, and pair him with lizzie k, the dynamic duo would bring in millions to the depleted burnsville coffers.

Regarding #6.
That’s too bad for the senior class. I remember off campus lunch was being grandfathered out (mine was the last class to have it for sophomore and junior years) and it seems like they’ve just kept on taking away from those kids.
My senior year spring semester was what solidified the importance of managing my time and being responsible. The amount of freedom we had was almost like a nice happy medium between high school and college.
Fall semester I had late arrival, 2 classes, study hall/lunch and then 3 classes over at senior campus with early release where I went to go work at my part-time job. Spring semester I had late arrival, 2 classes, lunch, 1 more class and then work program.
While I enjoyed a good amount of freedom for a kid in high school it kind of forces you to either grow up or suffer the consequences. By taking away that freedom these kids will be even less prepared for the real world.

For #6 – I think it’s B.S. that the school is claiming anything about rigor. For christs sake, the’ve had a long time to run their curriculum. Squeezing in one more hour in the final year I think is a bit of a stretch. They set the credits necessary for graduation. If the kids have it covered, what’s their issue? for the Kids that want to get more money out of their tax dollars, there are the AP classes, many of which aren’t even on the high school campus.
In the story I think I found the real reason for doing this. To even up schedules with others schools so kids can move around and take classes at different sites.
Burnsville movie production? Um, yeah… right. Sounds like some old buddies got to drinking a bit too much around the back yard fire pit and the next morning kept rolling with what they talked about. Considering the taxes and the labor rates in Minnesota, I just don’t see how it could ever work.

Hey
Just so you know…that washed up Hollywood has been..passed away the day after Christmas 2009..because the United States Army had his platoon witness a nuclear bomb blast…test…for FREE!
Ed died a slow painful death at our very own Minnesota VA…
His dying wish was to have us four “unkowns” continue his dream of a movie studio in Minnesota…which won’t happen now…
Thank you for saying my website is nice…maybe Ed staged a publicity stunt…..koodos to him..I just thought he was trying to leave a legacy and help our state..he was a good man–with a BIG heart…
Perhaps –you should contact the poor souls you are speculating upon—before you publish your thoughts…..I’m sure you just didn’t know all the facts-
You seem like a kind person..just perhaps misinformed….Tawnja

I got nothing…MSPD? Whit? Anyone?

Too bad his dying wish wasn’t a pizza place, a “diner”, or a soup/salad/sandwich/coffee restaurant in the south metro.

All I know is, my dying wish is going to be for 100 more wishes.
