I live fairly close to Rahn, so I’m not surprised the school is so empty — there’s just not that many children around here. Even in the single-family homes, I get the impression that there are a lot of older residents whose kids are out of the house or at least past elementary school age. I know there’s been discussion of closing it at some point in the future, but it seems like it would make more sense to close an elementary school further west if it came to that, not one way over on the edge of the district.

The attendance boundaries around here are weird, though. Sioux Trail is a ways west of Rahn, but pretty much draws from all the way up Highway 13 and to the northeast of here. And then there’s that ISD 196 salient near here that juts up into 191 and is surrounded by it on three sides. I don’t know if that was caused by just a strange population distribution, or what happened.

The Jimmy John’s robbery fits right in with most of what we’ve seen in Burnsville lately. I used to live in this area and it was not all that great back then. Just in the last few months I’ve read about a murder, this robbery, and another shooting all within a mile or so of where I lived. Just last weekend there was an article about a shooting at a gas station a few miles away.

In general Burnsville has a lot of lower income housing on Hwy 13 from about Cliff Rd. all the way past County Rd 5. I don’t think this area is going to age very well and I think we will see more and more of this in that area in the future. You can’t have that high a density of low income apartments and not expect this to happen.

Old Chicago? I dunno. I got take out there once and thought the place seemed awful big and would probably be pretty noisy when full. The ceiling was soo high.

Jimmy Johns… I am a little suprised that Jack Bower didn’t crack that one already as well. My guess is it might have been an inside job. they must have had some major cash on hand to make it worth it.

Art at the library? I guess I don’t have a problem with it. I’d want to know more about the background behind the budgeted funds. I.e. is that money that was given to the city marked for use in art, and thus they picked this? Sometimes there are funds where cities are required to spend the money for specific uses, maybe this is one.

perhaps ISD 191 just needs to do one of two things. 1) have a romantic movie night for the district’s parents and give away free condoms with strategiclly placed holes. 2) slightly change the sex education program to promote premarital sex? Both result in more tax payers in the region?

Really though, I’m not sure what is up. Is enrollment dropping? Maybe find out why.

Arts- personally, the more venues for artists to play the better. Personally these smaller venues are the “minor leagues” for the preformers. They hone thier craft and draw bigger audiences until they can sell out bigger venues, like the PAC.. Issues with the expense aside.. there’s really not a serious reason that the place isn’t booked with better acts more often, that the management company.. That and the economy.. i don’t know how Mystic Lake is doing with their shows.. seems that I haven’t heard of as many things going on there of late.

library – a place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials are kept for use but not for sale. (Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary).
It would seem the statue would fall within the realm of artistic materials. Books with pictures of sculptures and statues would not be the same as being able to view actual sculptures and statues. There may be people who wish to “study” the sculpture as part of an artistic learning endeavor. It would appear that the statue fits the bill of something capable of use for research. To begin to debate its “value” as art, or as a research material, invites the same debate for every book, manuscript, film, etc. in the library. Just because something is of no current use to me does not mean it is without use.
