Tearitup,

Thanks for the comment. As I started to read your comment I was seriously hoping to hear that you had an all together different experience opening up the possibility that it was just an off night due to the snow storm or whatever.

I'm truly saddened to hear that your experience was nearly identical food-wise. At least the service was better. I really wonder if it wasn't a breakdown in communications because our waiter was apparently a non-native speaker.

Enjoy the holiday season!

I’m going to confess that I went to Stefano’s this weekend. I was so disappointed with what you guys had encountered and wanted to see for myself what was happening there. After being there this weekend to satisfy my own morbid curiosity I won’t be going back. The décor of the place was just as I remembered it. We show up and are shown to a table and given menus to look over. Funny thing, once the waitress came to take out orders I inadvertently ordered the same steak dish as you had Bill. But, I was told right away that they were no longer serving steak (!) except for a sirloin special they had that was not on the menu. We settled on the tortellini with ham and peas. The service we had was fine and I have no complaint about that. The food however left a lot to be desired. The tortellini was frozen and the sauce tasted jarred. I don’t have any problem with frozen pasta and jarred sauce, I’ve eaten plenty of it in fact. I did however expect better from a nice Italian restaurant. Business may be off at restaurants all over and I understand the need to contain costs but that was just unacceptable for the per plate charge. We finished with the Tiramisu (a favorite dessert of mine) and it tasted like it had been in the walk-in way too long. Like I said, I went to satisfy my curiosity. I find your reviews to be really spot on Bill and we have similar taste. Sad to say I have to agree with you about Stefano’s and I won’t be going back.

Tearitup,

No kidding. I was appalled at the behavior of the waiter and Stephano who honestly believed that their suggestion of throwing some spinach on the side of my shitty dish would work.

You apologize, profusely and swear no one else will receive the same issue again. Then you berate the waiter in the back of the house and make certain that they are well aware that if something is being substituted on the menu that the guests are aware of it before it arrives in front of them.

Well, unfortunately for Stephano's they did nothing of the sort and end up banned from our list of acceptable choices of restaurants. While I was originally shocked by the multitude of negative comments already posted all over the web about the restaurant, I can now see exactly how those poor individuals came to their conclusions.

An unfortunate end to a restaurant that really had made my transition to Minnesota a more pleasant one.

I'm sorry to hear that things have gotten so awful at Stephano's. It had always been a place I was quick to recommend when asked for something decent south of the river. Admittedly I haven’t been there myself in a few years but I would not have suspected such a huge decline.
