I really didn’t want to have to do this but I have outgrown Gallery on my website. With over 16,000 photos hosted and a requirement to move to Gallery2 to fix some issues and have continued updates to the software, I decided to move to a pay-for hosted solution. I hemmed and hawed over the decision but based on the simple uploading via e-mail Flickr won out over the competition from Google and others.
I have been uploading the photos I have taken over the last year that I have in their original state. The rest I have on Gallery will be uploaded at their maximum size (1024×768 in most cases) when I get around to it. Thankfully there is a handy-dandy perl script that uses the Flickr API to upload entire directories. The only thing I wish it did was create sets and add the photos to them. That would own me.
If you’re interested in seeing what I have so far, please check out my Flickr page here or on the left sidebar.

792 photos uploaded so far. I have the entire last year up and from here out it’ll be fairly fast to get them uploaded as they’re all 1024×768.
I am spending the time to geocode all the images (to the best of my ability — and unfortunately my curse is that I have a fantastic memory for specific, mundane and pointless details like this) so that they can be mapped.
It’s nice going back through the honeymoon photos and reliving all the exact locations (based on fairly good aerial shots) that we visited two years ago. Some day they’ll all be street level detail, woot! Kim wants to go back and I’ll just suggest she use Google Earth 2015 to check it out for free instead ;)

So, I move to Flickr to avoid doing anymore development and what do I decide to do? Develop a script to move my gallery1 installation to Flickr.
At least it didn’t take that long :)
