Last year Kim had me take her out to Mission American Kitchen in Minneapolis, MN for Valentines Day.
Normally this would have been cool with me but earlier that month I had learned from a friend that White Castle does special candle lit dinners with reservations on February 14th and that’s what I really wanted to do.
While Mission American Kitchen was ok food wise, Kim claims I ended the evening with the comment, “we would have been better off at White Castle.”
This year, Kim being the kickin’ wife she is, made reservations for us at White Castle on East Lake in Minneapolis. Surprisingly, this is a popular thing to do, as two other locations (Woodbury and Bloomington) were booked for the evening.
Kim made 7:30 reservations and we arrived a bit early. There were quite a few people inside and huddled around their tiny booths. At first, Kim was concerned we wouldn’t eat by candlelight, but sure enough, there were two small scented red candles at each table!
We walked inside and were met by the hostess who seated us quickly. Yes, I said hostess! The tables were cheaply decorated but in a cute way with red plastic table covers, doily place mats, cheap valentine candy, etc.
They asked if we would like them to take a photo of us and snapped a quick shot with a Polaroid. We ended up taking that home later in the evening free of charge.
They had nice little menus for Valentines day that included a Valentines Day special item. I ordered 10 hamburgers and Kim got a couple herself along with a chocolate shake and some onion peels.
The food was definitely White Castle and while we had fun, I don’t think this will become a yearly tradition by any means.
If you’re looking for something inexpensive (we paid $13.80) and different, call up your local White Castle HQ and see if they are one of the 18 or so cities nationwide that do this.
A fun time tonight — thanks honey!

Mindy and I stopped by to see if you were there but we must have just missed you. Saw all the table dressings and candles… quite surprising how seriously they take it!
