Following through on last week’s Thanksgiving themed poll for travel plans and loosely based on another suggested poll by reader Vickie, I decided to go with the all important Thanksgiving question: white or dark meat? Personally I’ve always been a dark meat fan and I still cannot understand, to this day, why people prefer white meat. No matter who has cooked it, where I’ve eaten it, or how great it is supposed to be, the white meat is always dry, boring, and nearly tasteless while the dark meat is juicy, tasty, and tender. Yum.
Now, you might say, “well you’re a fucking weirdo that likes to eat steak rare (duh), eat pizza the right way (not square pieces), refuses to put ketchup on hot dogs (I’m not under the age of 18), and who obviously knows what good food should taste like,” but even with all of that, I really want to see if I’m in the minority of people with good taste or not ;-)
So, vote on, and let us know what you think!
Turkey Meat
- White (51.0%, 18 Votes)
- Dark (46.0%, 16 Votes)
- N/A (3.0%, 1 Votes)
Total Voters: 35

Some of each, we don’t discriminate.

Dark meat Thanksgiving day, but I think white meat tastes better in the leftover sandwich with gravy and cranberry sauce.

Dark meat all the way for me. Most of my family prefers it too.

Thigh meat please… with extra skin

dark meat creeps me out. ketchup is nothing but rotten, squished tomatoes, and rare steak has the most flavor. I agree with you on a lot of food related things, but dark meat is creepy.

I am all about the white meat and am very much a breast man. Yes, I just said that.

N/A for me = both
If I had a gun to my head, it would be dark. Give me the wing, neck, “pope’s hat” and the giblets and I’m good to go.
If it’s a smoked turkey, the drumstick can’t be beat. Especially if I’m walking around the State Fair.

@MSPD Eating a drumstick always requires brandishing of said drumstick first.
If I had to choose one or the other, I’d go with the dark meat. I like a little of both, though.
Also, if you’re cooking your own turkey, do not be afraid to use the oven bag. It feels like cheating, but it totally works.

Neither – my first holiday as a vegan.
But, I have to agree with you, Bill. I always went white meat, and it was very bland.

Bland and dry white meat? That’s what the gravy is for..

1. brine your turkey, 2. roast it for the first 1/2 cooking time with the breast down, 3. make a good quality gravy…
and then you have juicy tasty white meat, which is my preference.
I also think it is un American to eat ketchup on a hot dog.

I agree that white meat is usually almost always done wrong. But I’ve also had it done correctly many times. Get yourself invited to geocacher Norvina’s place for Thanksgiving. A cooking genius.
What’s with the “no ketchup” on hotdog thing being unAmerican? There’s nothing better than a fake dog covered in ketchup and mustard.

Dark meat. Any bird except a turkey. If you must eat turkey, brine it, butterfly it, and roast it at high temp ( a la America’s Test Kitchen advice).
