More Lakeville Transit Tax Whining

Looks like Lakeville is at it again, whining about the fact that they are being pressured by politicians that represent municipalities already in the transit taxing district but they just can’t understand how a $40 increase in property tax will benefit them.

I have talked about the rising taxes in Dakota County due to transit and have directly mentioned that those that aren’t a part of the taxing district should not have free access to the same services available to those of us that are paying. I have been following several articles about this topic recently and there are some opposing viewpoints mostly because of an amended bill introduced by Rep. Shelley Madore, DFL-Apple Valley which Lakeville’s politicians feel was introduced improperly.

I personally feel that their arrogance and blatant refusal to give a shit that their residents are using transit facilities paid for by others, in very large numbers, and the give us what we want or fuck off and die, rhetoric is abhorrent. Thankfully, it appears that the Met Council isn’t going to put up with that sort of bullying and they said that unless Lakeville begins to pay up, new transit stations will not go into Lakeville along the 35W corridor.

While I admit what Madore did is a shit move, I believe it pales in comparison to the childish politics that is pouring out of Lakeville. I say pony up the dough or stop whining that you aren’t being treated fairly while you step all over everyone else and allow your citizenry to take advantage of transit options that you haven’t helped fund.

Childish Behavior?!

From the PiPress’ Inver Grove Heights Police Calls:

Girl Scout cookies are quite fattening you know:

Hungry child: A 6-year-old boy in the 100 block of Wentworth Avenue West called 911 because his older brother wouldn’t let him have cookies, the older brother reported March 18. Police advised the 6-year-old to call 911 only in an emergency.

Honey, do you think this haircut makes me look fat?

Interfering with a 911 call: Police responded March 14 to a 911 hang-up call in the 4800 block of Ashley Lane. A woman at the residence said her boyfriend woke her by cutting her hair with scissors. She said she began pushing and yelling at him and tried to call 911, but he grabbed the phone from her. The 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of interfering with a 911 call.

Panino Brothers: Apple Valley, MN

As promised Kim, Aaron and I headed over to Panino Brothers in Apple Valley located right next to my absolute favorite landmark, the dreaded roundabout at 153rd and Gallivant Pl, and under the relatively new GrandStay Hotel.

All three of us visited Panino Brothers on their opening night, Friday March 21st, and enjoyed the atmosphere so much that we decided that we had to return just to check out their famed “panino” sandwiches which is their signature menu item. Knowing that Panino Brothers offers a lunch special, every single day, from 11 AM - 2 PM, we figured that we could get more bang for our buck if we ordered their Panino Ino sandwiches at a reduced rate ($5.50 for the sandwich, drink, chips or fries, and a pickle instead of the usual range of $7.95 to $9.25).

The restaurant wasn’t terribly busy, being Sunday at noon on one of the first nice spring days of the year, so we walked the length of the restaurant and chose to sit in a very sunny corner that overlooked the traffic circle of death and offered a terrific back-warming experience. Immediately our server, Kristen Kristin (I was corrected on 4/11 by Kristin; I’m owned!), came over and took our drink orders. I took a quick look over at their large selection of 30 beers on tap, I chose the Schell’s Dark and Aaron took one of the same. Kim was looking forward to ordering a Sprecher Root Beer and that’s exactly what she did. In short order our drinks were back on the table and I commented to Kim that at least she appeared to be drinking beer for once ;-)

I asked Kristen what she recommended as far as the paninos go and after admitting that she had only tried about 6 of the 20 different paninos her favorite, so far, was the Caesar Cardini (chicken, swiss, parmesan, and mozzarella with romaine lettuce, tomato and Caesar dressing). After some hemming and hawing, I ordered a “Buffalo Chicken” (chicken, swiss, mozzarella, PB Buffalo sauce, celery and bleu cheese) which is listed in the menu as a PB favorite and one that our server had recommended and then I also chose “The Von Braun” (sliced bratwurst, sauerkraut, swiss and mozzarella with spicy mustard). Kim chose to go with a “Steak & Cheese” (marinated steak strips, swiss, mozzarella, and cheddar with lettuce served with a side of steak sauce) but went sans steak sauce. Aaron didn’t see anything that caught his fancy on the panino list and chose their $7.95 garlic cheese bread appetizer with a side of marinara.

While our paninos were being prepped, we chatted at length with our server about the restaurant, the fucking roundabout and all the cars that travel the wrong direction down the one-way street (we saw two failed attempts at head-on collisions today during the hour we were inside) and various other crap like us being camera toting geeks (not her words heh).

Now for the most anticipated information ever to grace my website…the paninos! According to their menu a panino is literally translated as “a little bread” but another possible translation defines a panino as an Italian word meaning both roll and stuffed bread. They say, “put simply, it is Italian for sandwich”. To me, it looked like a fat tortilla or pita shell rolled and stuffed full of meat and cheese. Something like a cheese and meat stuffed breadstick that had been torn open — well sorta. They were warm and soft and heavy as can be. I was surprised by the weight as I picked up The Von Braun.

Being curious, I unrolled The Von Braun panino half-way and peered inside. Nothing out of the ordinary in there, lots of meat, sauerkraut and mustard. I took a bite and found the spicy mustard to not be spicy enough for my tastes (to be honest, I’m a picky bastard when it comes to mustard and I’m partial to horseradish mustard so it just tasted like any old mustard to me so YMMV) but the sandwich was quite nice. I wouldn’t order that particular one again but, to be fair, it wasn’t listed as a PB favorite and one of the reasons I specifically chose it. Later, Josh — the owner, came out and mentioned that it is on the menu to cater to those that might be really into their brats (Wisconsinites staying at the GrandStay perhaps?!). My choice not to eat it again wasn’t for any other reason than I have so many other options to choose from and the fact that the Buffalo Chicken panino was just about the tastiest buffalo chicken sandwich I’ve ever fucking had.

Now, for me to claim something is the “tastiest sandwich I’ve ever fucking had,” has got to stand for something. I have eaten buffalo chicken sandwiches of all shapes, sizes and types at local places, chains, made them myself and never had something quite like this panino before. As I said above, the bread is soft and warm and is filled with cheese, meat, bleu cheese and celery. Josh mentioned that all of their sauces are homemade including the buffalo sauce and the bleu cheese which is Josh’s own recipe. To me, the buffalo sauce was a little muted but my taste buds are fried from all the hot shit I’m happy to burn them with (think blow-torch hot) so I am not the best judge there but the bleu cheese sauce was fuckin’ killer. I’m a big bleu cheese fan and this was quite a bit better than anything I’ve had before. The PB favorite Buffalo Chicken panino comes with the Bill Roehl stamp of approval; take that with how many ever grains of salt you choose :)

I took a couple of bites of Kim’s Steak & Cheese panino and found it to be even heavier than mine were. The steak was tender and the overall sandwich was great. Looking back, I would have liked to have tried the steak sauce now knowing that it would have been made by the brothers themselves… I didn’t eat enough of it to recommend it but I’m sure Kim will chime in later with her experience.

Aaron mentioned that his garlic cheese bread was good but when I asked if he thought it was worth the $7.95 sticker price he just shook his head. It had a couple of pieces and a nice sized cup of marinara and while I didn’t try it, I must admit it at least looked pretty ;) I would honestly suggest you skip all of the appetizers and instead stick to the paninos but if you insist, at least you know the garlic cheese is pretty good :)

Josh mentioned that this summer they will have a fenced patio where they will be offering food outside. I hadn’t noticed the concrete slab out there because of all the lingering snow, but today the snow was gone and the thought of a patio was definitely nice. It will be an awesome spot for Kim and I to take a walk to, have a snack and a beer and enjoy the first neighborhood bar in all of Apple Valley. Finally, someone who fucking gets it! Unfortunately it took a restaurant owner who was previously located way outside the metro to bring a non-chain that could really be successful to Apple Valley.

As we left the restaurant, Kim was whining that she was full. As soon as I got into the car I started complaining too. Man, those paninos are filling and tasty. This might seriously ruin my diet ;-) This is fair warning, if you’re looking to eat light or are on a diet, I do not suggest ordering a full panino — the panino inos will be more than enough for you.

I must admit that we were offered a handful of poker chips which can be redeemed for free Panino Brothers’ menu items as part of our visit and while they weren’t left on the table, I want to be clear that Kim was the one who took them and not me. I don’t want anyone to think that I can be bribed into giving a review of any kind except by giving me great food the first time out.

I really think that Panino Brothers not only gets it but is one of the top locally owned restaurants in Apple Valley and they have only been open for a little over a week. This family owned business is only going to get better IMHO. Their staff is friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and great. I must admit that I’m nearly in love with the entire idea. If you’re looking for a good beer selection, pretty decent food and a nice place to hang out this is for you. Just remember, this is mostly a bar and if you’re not into that type of establishment, it might not be your thing. While there is definitely room for improvement as there always is, Panino Brothers comes highly recommended by me and I definitely give them two thumbs up. We both feel that Panino Brothers is well on its way to becoming one of our top restaurants but it will take just a few more beers to make certain ;-)

Pleasing the Budget Nazi

Kim and I go shopping every two weeks for groceries. Because Kim is a budget-Nazi, I have been on a fairly tight budget for the last couple of months and have been doing everything in my power to fit everything we (including the dog) need to eat for two weeks into $135.Now, I don’t know how much most people spend on groceries and I am fairly positive that most people don’t pay attention at all until after the fact but being that I am not permitted to go over by even a dollar without hearing it from the wife, I usually spend at least a week planning everything from the general menu right down to the exact items we will purchase and the cost almost to the penny.

I start my research on Sunday and begin with a trip over to one of my new favorite websites, GroceryGuide. You provide your zip code and it shows what stores are available in your area. You select which ones you are interested in seeing the sales for and go from there in any direction you wish. They will do everything up to and including printing a grocery list based on the items you want. Now, this site is by no means perfect and can be slow at times (especially if you’re adding and removing or resorting) but for me it gets the job done without requiring me to go to the grocery stores to get their weekly circulars.

After looking through GroceryGuide, I write down what I’m likely going to be interested in purchasing that week. As I said above, I have a general menu planned out for each day by doing something along the lines of, “I need 8 meat and 6 vegetarian dinners, this many quick lunches in case I forget to make something and this much food for snacks.” Sometimes, like our last 14 days, I miscalculate a bit and we’re stuck eating pasta for two days or scrounging on Thursday for *something* to eat for lunch at work.

Around Wednesday or Thursday, especially if Rainbow hasn’t cheerfully provided me with a weekly circular in the mail along with all the other fucking junk mail that ends up crammed into my tiny little mail slot, I head out to both Cub and Rainbow to pickup their circulars and coupon books (in Cub’s case). I already have a pretty damn good idea what everything will cost and what I will be buying but sometimes I’m surprised with a couple of deals that might not have be very clear from GroceryGuide’s listings. I carefully go through my list, sort by store and list everything in order of how we shop at the store. Rainbow is far less familiar to us than Cub as we only recently started shopping there so I usually spend at least an extra 20 minutes wandering around looking for something that I haven’t a clue where it’s located. You would think that when Rainbow uses descriptive aisle informational signs that read like “eating nuts” that I’d be able to figure out where everything was but alas, I’m not :)

I make sure to ask Kim what she’s really wanting that week to make sure that I make room in the tight list for her. She’s more likely than not to ruin the entire thing by requiring that I purchase such horrible processed foods like EasyMac and tuna lunch meal kits. She also likes to whine about my menu choices but won’t win out until she starts cooking herself. The chef gets to decide what we’re eating after all.

We start with the store that we’re buying the most meat at or the meat that I really need to poke through to find what I want. After cramming the cart full of 99% of what I was looking for on the list we go through the checkout and see what we’re left with. Sometimes I’m over, sometimes I’m under (like today). We then head off to the next store with a buffer (or overrun) and have to make changes on the fly as we go.

Today was my best shopping day ever I believe. I did so well that Kim encouraged me to write this post because of how much I saved. Now, I knew going into it that we would be saving quite a bit of money because Cub had a nice B1G2F sale on several items. In addition, at some point this week they sent out a coupon that said if you spend $70 you get $7 back. I was trying ever so hard to make sure I spent as close to $70 as possible w/o going over by much to maximize my ownage. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, Kim’s bullshit needs were most of the $6.84 ;-) Rainbow had a great 10 for 10 sale (mix and match) that allowed me to get everything from frozen seafood to hot sauce for a pretty damn good price. I wish they would do that one more often :)

My total at Rainbow before savings was $59.39 and after, $41.11 which gave me a total savings of $18.28 or about 31%. While over 30% isn’t bad, it’s certainly not as great as the complete and utter ownage I pulled off at Cub. My total at Cub before savings was $146.82 and honestly, I was a bit nervous that I wouldn’t make it under the budget point because it seemed like a long ass way to go before those coupons started peeling off the digits… In the end I saved $69.98 or about 48%. The cashier actually mentioned to me, “I was wondering if we were going to owe YOU money.” After we walked outside, I mentioned to Kim that I’m sure they see that kind of shit pretty often and she said that from what she’s heard manufacturers consider coupons advertisements because so many people see them and forget to use them. Maybe the cashier at Cub was actually surprised, I’ll never know.

Anyway, my overall total for today was $206.21 before savings and after recouping $88.26 (43%) we ended up with $117.95 and a surplus of $17. While it’s nothing spectacular, I must admit that I feel pretty proud that I can own that hard ;)

Anyone have any other suggestions or comments about what your family does to tighten up the belt but still come out with enough food to happily feed your family?

South Metro Police Blotter: Ouch!

From the South metro police blotter on the StarTribune. See the original (until the link dies) here.

On March 15th, a kid ignored his mother’s advice and almost froze like that:

Medical. Officer Karen Shaw received a call of a medical emergency at a residence. Upon arrival, Shaw found an 18-year-old man laying on the floor in the living room. “His head was cocked at an odd angle and he told me he was in pain and his neck was stuck in that position,” Shaw said. The man said, “I was talking on the telephone for a long time and my neck is now stuck in this position.”

On March 17th, someone fucked up their car and then people tried to help by picking up the car. I’m not sure what hurt worse:

Auto accident. Officer Karen Shaw was called to a problem with an automobile on a private road in front of Taco Bell. When Shaw arrived, the woman who had been driving the vehicle was standing next to it. A 12-foot pothole had developed and the woman drove into it and couldn’t get her car out. Bystanders had tried to lift the car out of the pothole. A tow truck removed the car. Code enforcement officers are working with the property owner to get the pothole repaired.

Sometime during the week of March 7th and 14th, this guy was just waiting to get on the interstate, why, what did you think he was doing?

Drunk driving. Sergeant Chad Hagen was on patrol late at night when he located a vehicle sitting at a green light at the intersection of 185th Street and County Road 50. The vehicle sat at the green light through the entire cycle and didn’t proceed, so Hagen activated his emergency lights on his squad car and walked up to the car to check on the driver. When he approached the driver, he asked what he was doing. The driver replied, “Just waiting to get on the interstate. Why, what are you doing?” Hagen detected the odor of alcohol and asked the driver to step out of the car to perform a field sobriety test. The driver failed the test and recorded over twice the legal limit. The driver was arrested and taken to jail.
