Eagan Beats Burnsville at Stopping Prostitution?

According to this article in the Pioneer Press, Burnsville has upped its enforcement of prostitution within the city limits, presumably to clean up the hotels so that they can attract out of state vacationers and those coming for the Republican National Convention.

As many of you know, I have been closely following the Dakota County Criminal Complaints and archive them in text format which makes them easy to read and more importantly, search. After reading the article about how Burnsville has stepped up enforcement, I wanted to see just how many criminal complaints had shown up from Burnsville since I started watching back in January of 2008 compared with other municipalities in Dakota County.

After all of this stepped up enforcement, Burnsville has only had two criminal complaints filed since January of 2008 while Eagan has three. You can check out Burnsville’s complaints (PDF warning) here and here. You can view Eagan’s here, here, and here. To be fair to Burnsville, Eagan’s three complaints all stem from the same crime while Burnsville had to go out and beat the bushes twice to get their two collars. As you can tell from those complaints and the article linked above, both Burnsville and Eagan are using CraigsList postings to track down prostitutes and bring them, their pimps and related individuals to justice.

The PiPress article quotes some arrest stats from Burnsville’s enhanced prostitution enforcement:

Prostitution stings: 9
Males arrested for soliciting prostitution: 34
Females arrested for prostitution: 15
Male arrested for prostitution: 1
Males arrested for promotion of prostitution: 2
Total arrests: 52

While I’m not seeing anything close to those numbers since January, perhaps they don’t show up there or they haven’t gotten that far along? In the article Burnsville Police Chief Bob Hawkins was paraphrased as saying, “he hopes the prostitution stings will eventually send the message that Burnsville is a city cracking down on prostitutes, johns and pimps.” Personally, while 52 total arrests is great I’m sure it isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. If anything, they are just going to get smarter and stay the hell off CraigsList.

Here Piggy, Piggy, Piggy!

From the Star Tribune’s South Metro Police Blotter:

I’m just glad it wasn’t graffiti or then this would have been a really serious crime:

Property damage. Someone reported graffitti on a Minneapolis Police squad car. The graffitti was written in crayon.

I can only imagine how fast the police responded to this one:

Property damage. A resident in the 12400 block of S. Cavell Avenue reported someone threw jelly donuts at his house and vehicle.

Enchanted Free Dinner at LeeAnn Chin

Two freebies to chat about tonight, since other than the pile of tainted dirt from the new Twins stadium site being dumped in the Minnesota River floodplain instead of in the “ultra-secure” lined landfill that will one day be directly adjacent to a nice lake and recreation area in Burnsville, there really isn’t anything worth writing about.

First freebie was a movie rental which we cashed in on Friday night for Disney’s Enchanted. While I had heard the movie was funny I didn’t believe anything I was told. Rarely do I find girly movies worth my time but knowing that Kimmy suffered her way through American Gangster I figured renting that would be an even trade. Unfortunately, it wasn’t terrible even because after the stupid cartoon beginning, the rest of the movie (well, minus the stupid cartoon ending) was quite enjoyable and I found myself pausing it several times to laugh, almost in hysterics and usually out loud, because it really was that funny. If you haven’t seen Enchanted yet and you’re looking to please the significant other in your life that might be into girlish movies, this is one that I promise will be at least tolerable for you.

The second freebie was also a Kim special which was to try out two of LeeAnn Chin’s three new menu items between 4:30 and 6:15 today only. Now, I despise LeeAnn Chin almost as much as I despise anything on this planet and even though I have been called hypocritical by plenty of douchebags on the Internet, there are just some things you must do to please your wife (thankfully, she doesn’t enjoy coffee enough to make me go into Starbucks) and this was one of those times.

We were greeted with a long line stretching out the front door and after we got inside we were offered a small cup of their “excellent” frozen yogurt. Having not ingested frozen yogurt since TCBY’s heyday in the late 1980s I found this taste test to be just like eating really cold yogurt. Before I could even open my mouth to form the words, they had already come out of Kim’s. While I eat yogurt every single day, and for the most part have come to tolerate it, this was pretty nasty and not something I would eat again, especially not in a large portion after eating fake Chinese food.

Their three new options were Mongolian, Bourbon, and Kalbi chicken. The free deal mandated that you get at least one of the three before getting another free but I decided to go with two new ones just for kicks. Anything had to be better than what they normally offer, right? Well, not so much in this case. The new offerings taste exactly like everything else they offer…the same. There are no distinct flavors in anything they serve and the Kalbi and Mongolian chicken were no exceptions.

My recommendation? Don’t bother with LeeAnn Chin, even if your wife likes it and it’s free but definitely rent Enchanted — funny flick.

Final Course Cafe: Northfield, MN

Last night I got an SMS from Josh that said, “Hey, you wanna check out a new place in town, my treat?” Well, I am not going to turn down an opportunity to check out a new place especially if it’s free so I drove down to Northfield to spend the day with Josh while Kim worked.

I got to Northfield just after 11 and after waiting for Josh to get up, get ready and get out the door, we headed over to the Final Course Cafe and got there just after noon. We walked into the small and very new building that’s situated on the corner of a retail complex in the parking lot of a newly constructed group of condos that have not seen much activity since it was picketed during construction.

Final Course Cafe is setup just like any small coffee bar that serves sandwiches and they have a menu, ala James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery (also in Northfield), but done with dry erase rather than multi-colored chalk. Sandwich items were in the $2.50 to $7.50 range (PBJ is $2.50 and their BLT is $6.00 but the rest are priced at $7.25 or $7.50) and include a side. We were told if we opted to go without the sides the prices would drop “a couple bucks” but the gentleman behind the counter wasn’t super specific as to what the new prices would be.

The space is nice and bright with two floors separated by a fairly steep staircase. There were a handful of tables on the first floor and another eight or so upstairs where we ate. There are plenty of windows which offered lots of natural sunlight. If you want, they have free wifi which you can gank while sitting in one of their comfy looking chairs strategically placed in the corners near the windows. While the space was nice and bright, it wasn’t all that comfortable and not some place I would hang out to drink coffee and surf as opposed to the various other locations in Northfield that offer the same sort of atmosphere.

We got our food soon after we sat down and it didn’t look like anything all that spectacular. We both ordered their “Robust Genoa Salami” sandwiches which were served on fairly fluffy soft rolls with ham, salami, provolone and munster with a vinaigrette dressing. Josh ordered his without vegetables, as usual but I wanted it as it was intended to be, yet they apparently got a bit confused and mine came sans veggies.

Josh ordered his sandwich with potato salad and I got mine with their three bean salad and the sandwiches also came with a typical and boring Vlassic-like pickle. Even before taking a bite, Josh said, “I already have a suggestion for them: lose the Vlassic pickles.” I was too busy prepping the plate for a photo to even notice but as soon as I bit into it, it was obvious that it wasn’t anything special. While this wasn’t the death knell for this place, the fairly boring and overpriced sandwich was. Honestly, you’re far better off at Hogan Brothers or James Gang Coffeehouse if you’re looking to eat at the same sort of restaurant. Josh went downstairs to grab a side of mayo and I agreed that this sandwich needed something but I really don’t think that even with the mayo, more vinaigrette and the greens would have saved my sandwich. Josh ate half and took half home enjoying the second half again around three and even though I didn’t particularly care for it, he seemed to enjoy it just fine but he did leave a quarter of his pickle behind.

The three bean salad was decent as I’m not usually a big fan of that type but I mostly saw kidney and green beans only receiving one and a half pieces of the third bean type. Josh’s potato salad was nothing for me to jump up and down over but Josh said he was surprised that it was as decent as it was for him. I would seriously be shocked if their potato salad didn’t show up in a five gallon bucket from Sysco. While I thought my side was decent, I really don’t think it was worth whatever extra price they charge for them. Coincidentally, my experience today was very reminiscent, except for the fact that I got a pickle, of my piss poor experience at the now defunct Jan’s Brown Bag Deli. I really wish history would stop repeating itself…

Looking at the menu, they offer coffe (sic), Bridgeman’s Ice Cream, various soups and salads as well as desserts and pastries. I asked if they made the desserts themselves and the guy said that they make some of the pies, bring in some of the items from the greater Twin Cities area, and some come from as far as Pennsylvania. Because I wasn’t interested in dessert today, I didn’t bother for a more specific breakdown but I will admit at least one of the pastries looked damn tasty and I’m sure, if given the opportunity, Kim would have scooped it up without hesitation.

Our total bill (two sandwiches, sides, pickles, and one pop) was $16.50 or so. Certainly not expensive but far more than I thought it was worth. While I won’t go so far as to say that you should completely avoid the Final Course Cafe in Northfield, MN I will say that you should try any of the other locations in town first starting with Hogan Bros.

After writing everything I have listed above, I went to their website to get the address/phone information to post and I noticed that under their about section they note:

We are currently in the training phase of our opening. We will be expanding our menu daily as we approach our Grand Opening.

So I suppose, as is always the case, you should take everything I just said and throw it out the window…or not.

Taggers Busted in Inver Grove Heights

From the Pioneer Press’ Police Calls here:

Property damage: Police responded April 7 to a report of a male vandalizing property in the parking lot at King of Diamonds, 6600 River Road. Police found a 19-year-old man with a backpack full of spray-paint cans spray-painting a toll bridge. Another 19-year-old man also was found spray-painting nearby. They were arrested on suspicion of property damage. It was determined they had spray-painted street signs, utility boxes, a manhole cover, railroad boxes and the side and rear of Advanced Auto Repair, 6592 Concord Blvd. The damaged was estimated to be between $500 and $1,000. The suspects told police that they did it to get their name out in the public and to be noticed by other “taggers.”

Now, I’m against tagging and destroying property and it appears that they were damaging a ton of stuff but being that they mentioned that they were found spray painting the “toll bridge” near the King of Diamonds strip club I figured I’d throw some pictures up of the area and what it looked like a few years ago as opposed to now:

Here’s what the Inver Grove Heights “toll bridge” looked like in May of 2003:

Here’s what that same bridge looks like as of March 2008:
