Our best weather day ever at the Minnesota State Fair. Temperatures in the 80s, sun, nearly no clouds, met up with friends including Art and his family and Natasha and her’s. We ate lots of our long time favorites and several of the new ones and took the suggestions of some others and ate those too.
Quick recap: $2.50 soft-serve ice cream cones in the Dairy Barn were awesome (thanks for the tip Art!), $5.00 pig cheeks were nothing terribly special, $1 cider freeze wasn’t what I expected (like one of those sleeves of flavored ice you find in basement freezers), the Summit Beer on a Stick wasn’t on a stick anymore, my favorite habanero pickle vendor from Thursday’s Farmer’s Market downtown sells olives on a stick , and the Pickle Dog guy absolutely loved the fact that we had coupons printed from his website for free Kool-Aid!

Yeah, I didn’t really get my socks knocked off with the pig cheeks either. My favorite was just enjoying the last of the Summer Shandy at the Leinie’s Lodge in the nice sunshine.

Mmmmm, Summit. Even without the stick, it was pretty tasty. It was great seeing you guys. Girvans next Sunday!

I don’t know if I’ve ever had food at the fair that was truly amazing. I’ve always found food that I enjoyed, but nothing that knocks my socks off. That being said, I did like the pig cheeks. The sample I had was well cooked with a little char on the outside and still very tender on the inside. The glaze was nice, and had a little kick to it.
I’m not sure what I thought of the Sunnies in a Boat. Mine were well cooked and had decent flavor, but I’m not sure if I liked the berry sauce.
I also tried the alligator sausage. It was good, but like most sausage, it could have been made from any variety of meats and I wouldn’t have known the difference.

I don’t know if it was the saltiness of the fish or the fact that my stuffy nose was really bothering me by the time we got to Giggles, but I actually enjoyed the sauce. It complimented the dish nicely–for me.

As I did last year, I’m posting all the new foods which will be available for everyone to try and I’m going to ask what you think you’ll end up going after from the list knowing that it’ll likely catch a super premium price.
