Last week’s poll asked what kind of dreams you most often remember having. Surprisingly, knowing the economy as it currently stands, few people chose “more money” but instead went with “Weird/Funny”. I have been sick and taking DayQuil the last two days and I’ve been sleeping a lot so the dreams have been frequent and crazy. How many of you become walking zombies on cold medicine?
This week’s poll comes following a discussion recently I had with The Wife. She has a phenomenal memory for things that happened when she was young. She has asked me several times what my earliest memories are and aside from flashes which may or may not be influenced by photos and/or stories from relatives, I can honestly say that my memories of childhood don’t go back all that far. Thinking back now, even high school is a little thin. The rest, as I said, are flashes. Single moments in time that I remember a few seconds of, or the general gist of the situation, rarely more detail than that.
So what about you? Do you have memories of your childhood going back a long time? Do you just have flashes that may have been influenced by external forces? Would you prefer to go back to that time rather than living in the now? Whatever you have to say about this one go ahead and vote on the sidebar and then comment on below! After you do both of those things feel free to check out our expired polls in the archive or read through the previous posts about polls here.

I have some memories from when I was about 3-4 years old. We had a burgerly in our house, my mothers watch was stolen. I remember the muddy footprints in the hallway, the spot where she left the watch. We lived in house on Watco Court in Sacramento and I have some memories of that place. I remember getting in the car and pulling the emergency brake and going for a ride down the drive way an into an empty lot. I actually have pretty good memories up to about college, then there’s an empty seciton of about 3 years.. then good again until the kids were born, the I got nuthin.
Child brith, infants, small kids and growing family- blocked all that shit out of mind.
Got fun again when they started school.

I have a very spotty memory and tend to not remember much about the past, especially the painful parts. Frankly I think it makes living easier. My earliest independent (i.e. not potentially just remembered frm family stories) memories date back from 1 st grade. My husband however can remember things before age 1 and remembers lots of people and events.

I’ve seen enough photo albums and had enough discussions with my mom, dad, grandma and grandpa in my adult life that it is challenging to determine if the memories I have from my childhood are my own or made up of a patchwork of what I was told occurred and pictures I’ve seen. I remember bits and pieces, different events, the earliest probably when I was 3 when I decided (inexplicably) that rubbing sandpaper on my nose felt good. My grandma found me and just laughed and laughed, so I did too. I have vague images of a scabby nose and a sharp talk from my mother, and my dad laughing like my grandmother. (no scar)
I can remember running through hallways of an apartment building playing cowboys and Indians with my brother, but no recollection of actually living in an apartment and when I see images in my mind. That would be around 4 or 5 years old.
I think people that can remember things more clearly from the past tend to be the same people that are great at telling stories. My grandma can spin a tale, from all the way back to her growing up. I can barely remember a good joke. Google is my* friend.

I remember back to about 3 or 4. I remember the house and yard where we lived up until I was 4. I remember where the furniture was and some events that happened there. Sad thing: I remember already knowing at that age that my parents very much preferred my sister to me.

I remember the first time I pooped in a toilet proper. But that was just last year.
As far as my earliest memory, I remember a bunch of things that happened in the house I lived in until I was 4. Most notably, I remember this kid named Todd (he was 7) stealing my Tonka dump truck from me. He walked by my house the day I saw him with my truck that he stole. I yelled out, “Fucker!” even though I didn’t know what it meant. Turns out it means I have to stand in a corner with a bar of soap in my mouth.
Needless to say, the lesson didn’t stick.

I remember learning to ride a bike when I was 3 1/2, sort of. Real concrete memories start at about age 9-10. I remember my Grandpa’s funeral very well, which happened at 11.
But my memory sucks. I’m currently dating a guy that I used to date back in 2000. He remembers everything about our relationship back then and I remember virtually nothing. It is actually quite embarrassing when he says, “oh you remember blah blah blah” and I say, “did that really happen? God I was a bitch.”

My fiance and I were JUST talking about this the other day. Bill, have you bugged my apartment? I have some memories, but I wish I could remember how it really felt to be that age. Sigh…what a time. Anyway, the fiance remembers all his shit (probably to his detriment), while I kind of block a lot of shit out (even the time my parents almost divorced when I was 5).

I was just talking about this too. I have two memories from when I was 3 or 4 that I can see perfectly in my mind. One was when I was left at home by mistake. I remember running after down the street after a car. The other is of an earthquake. I’m told the earthquake was just a small one but I can still see and feel my whole room shaking, weird. Too bad good memories don’t stick in the mind as easily as scary ones.

I remember seeing Gerry Ford on TV, switching the channels and being very confused that he was on every station. I turned 4 right before the ’76 election.

Here’s one: I remember sitting on the floor in front of the TV watching the news about the JFK assassination. I’m not sure how much of it I understood at the time – probably not much.

My memory is usually very good. My earliest memory is from when I was 2.5. I remember details of the inside of a cabin that my grandparents owned at the time. They sold it shortly after and I had no photos of the interior, so it surprised my mom when sometime in high school I described in a fair amount of detail what the cabin looked like when you walked in, where things were, etc. I have an earlier memory of a flight I took at around 2 years old, but my mom insists my memory of which side of the plane we were seated on is wrong.
I kind of freaked my wife out a few months ago when I recounted day by day what we did and where we ate on a 2-week vacation we took 4 years ago. My memory certainly isn’t foolproof and I suppose I remember what I want to (I don’t think I’d remember what someone wore to an event, for example), but I remember places, things I saw, and events very well.

[...] week’s poll asked how good your childhood memory is. While The Wife’s memory is quite good, mine is terrible. I simply don’t remember much [...]
