I have been watching the distant airplane lights at night ever since the new runway opened at MSP in late October, and have never been terribly annoyed with the limited noise that they have created for my home. Granted, I do live right off of County Rd 46 on the edge of Lakeville and am at the southern most point of Apple Valley so my distance from MSP is fairly decent.
I have sat in the parking lot of the 28th Ave LRT station in Bloomington (next to the MOA) and have listened to the roaring engines of the airplanes flying overhead and have actually felt bad for the residents of the various apartments and homes right there. I’m thanking my lucky stars that the approaching aircraft flying over my home are as high as they are!
I was perusing Thisweek Online, the South Metro’s news source, and came across an article about Apple Valley not being properly represented in the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s Noise Oversight Committee. While Apple Valley probably didn’t need a spot back in 1989 during their initial inquiry about the issue, I certainly see it as being necessary now in 2005 with the new run way in operation:
The number of airport noise complaints coming from Apple Valley rose from 43 to 84 from September to October 2005, prompting the city to renew its request for a seat on the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s (MAC) Noise Oversight Committee (NOC).
The new north-south runway 17/35 of the Minneapolist-St. Paul International Airport opened on October 27, 2005. As of November 15, Apple Valley city hall has received 16 complaints from residents since the opening of the runway.
While Burnsville and Inver Grove Heights probably get a bit more noise from the planes, I really do believe that the north side of Apple Valley does deserve to have its concerns heard.
