In my never ending quest to find the hottest edible substances on the planet, I went searching for the best wings around town. Unfortunately most of my searching revealed sources which just didn’t appeal much to me. I’m looking for the kind of place that has 30+ different kinds of wings and levels of heat from fire extinguisher to “sign a fucking waiver before you eat these”. I’m tired of coming across BW3 or places that serve “mild Buffalo”, “hot Buffalo”, and BBQ and call it a day. I’m really tired of going to BW3 and having the waitress gasp at the fact that I’m ordering 12 Blazin’ wings (they used to be hotter I’m sure–did they dumb it down for mass market appeal?) because, to be perfectly honest, they aren’t even a little bit spicy.
But in my travels today, I found one place that really does appeal to me, Girvan Grille in Brooklyn Park has the Ghost Wing Challenge where you eat 10 wings in 15 minutes and get a t-shirt. The best is their disclaimer at the bottom which reads, in part, “Good hot wings always burn twice. Girvan Grille is not responsible for next day discomfort.” I already have UpWithTheMooses in on a trip up there, any other takers? While they aren’t offering 30+ varieties of wings, at least I know this place will leave me begging for a beer and some ice cubes–especially for round two.
Anyway, that said, what places do you like to eat wings? Do you have any suggestions on where I could find a menu similar to one of my favorite wing places ever? I’m up to any and all suggestions and the hotter the better! So please do share your knowledge of MSP wing joints as my mouth is watering just thinking about them :)

Tough topic. I know no such places in the Twin Cities, but I’ve had some damn good wings at Runyuns (order the Nuclear) and Shorty & Wags. Both are my favorite but unfortunately I get neither of them all that often. My mouth is now watering.

Another vote for Runyun’s. My preference is for hot and sweet and sticky. My favorite was when Major’s was Bilimbi Bay in AV. They had some awesome wings.

LOL! I can assure you they didn’t dumb it down. I struggled eating 2 blazing wings and the fact that they don’t effect you points to 1) you being crazy (haha, eating 12 with no problem is darn close to insane) or 2) you having burned off the sensitivity of your mouth or 3) you’re just immune… haha

IMO, The Blazin’ wings at BW3 are pretty damn hot, BUT they aren’t as stupid hot as they used to be.

Bill, did you ever go to Quaker Steak and Lube in Sharon, PA? If not, that’s where you go for wings. OMG are they good. The Atomic wings may in fact kill you. We used to go there just about every weekend and for sure after finals in college were over. That place rocks and is a must stop on our trips home.

Serums in Anoka has the best wings around. It is well worth the drive. They have 20 plus different flavors to choose from and offer a 25 wing platter that allows you to choose up to five flavors. The China Syndromes are extremely hot, but not the hottest on the menu.

sm, yup and even though I saw QS recently (it’s now where my parents live too) I forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder!

TimW, thanks! That’s exactly the kind of shit I’m looking to see. Now there are two places on the list. Any others?!

TimW, OMFG they licensed Wild Wing Cafe’s menu straight up–including the icons:

LOL. I’m there for sure.

The second best part about Serums besides the wings, once you find your flavor, you can then get that sauce on some of the best ribs in town as well.

I guess you’re only looking for hot wings, but as far as best chicken wings in the metro go I’d have to vote for Ray J’s in woodbury. They are “full wings” (flapper and drumstick) and my favorite sauce is the “drunken sauce” (buffalo mixed with asian). They are really crispy and fiilling.

Not necessarily just hot wings as I do like other flavors–just not nearly as much :) Thanks for the suggestion. After checking out their menu (thanks to Google, the restaurant’s website has a broken link): http://www.ray-js.com/rayj1.pdf it would appear to be one I’d be willing to try even though I don’t like the full and half order designations and the very limited number of sauces.
Thanks!

I was at Babe’s in Lakeville to take advantage of their awesome happy hour appetizer deals (4-7pm daily) and noticed they had several wing sauces available. I tried the standard Buffalo and the “Atomic” sauces.
Both sauces were good, and IMO the wings are done well (better quality than BW3). Although the “Atomic” was fairly hot and made me sweat a bit, I’m pretty sure that the heat in this sauce won’t satisfy our fearless leader Bill.
Happy hour price is only $6.99 for 12 wings with your choice of 2 sauces.

If you go during Happy Hour, you get a full order of wings for the half order price, and that is a shit ton of wings. Considering they come with flapper and drumstick for 7 dollars you are getting like 20 fucking wings.

The best tasting hot wings ever! Made from ghost peppers, found at sussex bowl bar and grill in sussex, wisconsin. Extremely hot but good which is rare.

Bill: Road trip?
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:25 am
We’d have to do it in one day due to the rules now in effect due to pregnancy. While possible, I don’t think that 5.5 hours of driving after consuming ghost wings is a good idea.

Bet we could drive it in four. Just sayin’

[...] I have been going to Wild Wing Cafe on Hilton Head Island, SC for nearly 20 years and when I saw the wing menu at Serum’s Good Time Emporium I immediately recognized it as the same. They are using the same wing flavors, the same icons and a modified slogan (they changed the slogan to “Best Wings West of Buffalo” from “South”). You can view the original menu here (Wild Wing Cafe is now using colors for their peppers instead of multiple peppers but I assure you that Serum’s menu is what Wild Wing Cafe was prior). If this sounds at all familiar it’s probably because I discovered this long ago while searching for the best hot wings in Minnesota. [...]
