Earlier this week I was interviewed for an article on the rise in use of GPS units originally slated for publication on Wednesday or Thursday. Sometime later in the week (after I had posted about the pushy teenager selling Star Tribune subscriptions) I got a call from the writer, Steve Alexander that they were looking for a photo for the story and figured I’d be a good candidate. While Steve admitted that he had seen my post about the kid selling the Star Trib, he obviously didn’t do any digging around for my photos or he might have thought twice about my photo appearing in print.
The article is already posted online, sans photo, under the title, “A tool finding its way nearly everywhere: Lower costs, better voice-recognition technology and even a game have helped GPS catch on,” here (link will eventually die because StarTribune’s policy on removing past stories sucks).
I was pleased to see that I was not misquoted and that Steve Alexander did take several of the quotes that I gave him over the ~30 minute interview. The only problem is their link for the Minnesota Geocaching Association actually points to a random Cache of the Month nomination rather than the main page itself. Oh well.
It’s been quite a while since my last appearance in the Star Tribune which was way back in January of 2006 (I guess once every two years is fair!) for an article on WeekNIGHT Caching.
Anyway, a nice article and useful for those that might be interested in getting one of those fancy units that are so popular these days (TomTom, Garmin Nuvi, etc). Give it a read and let me know what you think.

I spoke too soon. I was just notified by Aaron that the picture is now up on the article. I look like a GPS wielding Taylor Hicks with what appears to be much more gray than I actually have.
Woot, check it out here!

Andy,
You’re not going to keep it on the fridge alongside your kids’ projects? Bummer ;)
You own,

You’re still a wuss. ;) A wuss with a pasty face and gray hair at that!

Steve,
At least I’m not a 46 year old wuss ;)

I have to say that the gray had me a little concerned, Bill. I know it’s been a while since I’ve seen you and all, but it hasn’t been THAT long (October?). You look like an old man in the photo. (Try calling me a 46 year old wuss.)
:)

I got an e-mail from a buddy this morning who’s on vacation in Jacksonville, FL. He saw my picture in the Florida Trans-Union and I found this article in the Arizona Daily Star.
I’m now a famous tool finding my way into every newspaper in the country ;)
