There has been a lot of hubbub about the upcoming Republican National Convention, as if they can somehow recover from the Bush Administration’s atrocities and public disconnect with a 71 year old fart, including $525 shots of scotch and now the ability for Dakota County “destinations” to “shine”.
According to the article, among the many hotels that are looking to book RNC tourists, there are other opportunities for “destinations” such as the vast and exciting Burnsville Center which is looking to attract hotel guests with some sort of promotion. Perhaps they feel that since very few full-time residents actually go to Burnsville Center to buy anything, thus the numerous empty and/or pointless stores (e.g. The $10 Spot) they might be able to entice them to stop in and shop at the same shitty stores they see at home! I’m sure that people cry when they move more than 5 miles away from the nearest Applebee’s, Panera, Dick’s, Bath and Body Works or Victoria’s Secret!
Maybe Burnsville Center will team up with Internet Exposure, Inc to get the same great vacation destination look and feel that the Burnsville Convention and Visitors Bureau is trying to accomplish by attracting those from outside the state cruising up 35 to the rest of Minnesota.
I have a simple suggestion to attract Republican National Convention attendees: start supporting small, local businesses that offer something different from everywhere else. Oh wait, nevermind, the New Aged GOP loves to support Big Business Interests which include screwing the little guy.
Ignore everything I’ve said and continue on trying to detract attention from the Mall of America and the downtown metro areas. I’m sure you’ll do great — all while wasting your money.

Dear Lord,
Save me from the RNC. Keep them downtown and away from me. I just know they will wreck something or the rapture will start…nothing good can come from war loving homophobes invading our suburban bliss!

Wait a minute, Dakota County has destinations? This is news to me. Scott County wins this battle just by having Mystic Lake and Canterbury.

sornie, clearly you need to get out more:
Does Scott County have a riverfront landfill with a spectacular panoramic view of downtown Minneapolis, a riverfront sandstone mine, and a defunct riverfront driving range? No.
Does Scott County have any brand new old downtowns? No.
Does Scott County have a Hooters? No.
Does Scott County have a wonderfully smooth newly paved unused transit parking lot where children can rollerblade in the shade of massive, massive dirt piles? Nope.
Have you seen how far you have to drive in Scott County to get to the nearest municipal liquor store?? Not here!
In Scott County, if Super Target is out of something, you’d have to have them call around to other stores to check availability. Here, you can just walk to the other Super Target and check. Or the other Super Target. Or go five miles down 35 to the other Super Target.
And if you think watching horses race around in circles is entertainment, pull a lawn chair out in front of the AV traffic circle for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon.
Who needs Scott County!

MSPD,
I am afraid people will start thinking you are a Bill Roehl sock puppet!

Burnsville Center is a huge disappointment for me. So glad the MOA is close to us in Apple Valley. My mom and I tried to do some very simple Christmas shopping at Burnsville this year, and once we arrived we realized that they didn’t have an Abercrombie (my cousin wanted some clothes from there - I know, I know, Abercrombie - what can I say; my cousin has no taste). They also didn’t have a Banana Republic. I thought that these were normal stores found in every mall. Anyway, we ended up having to go to the MOA. I hope Burnsville revamps the mall soon. It’s like a ghost town.
As for the RNC - I’m ashamed that it is occurring in my state.
