Even though Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz continues to believe that “everyone” in Burnsville agrees with her plans for the Heart of the City, there are several others running who believe the Burnsville taxpayers want something else entirely.
According to the Star Tribune article linked above, Jerry Willenburg said:
“We had hundreds of people coming forward to say, ‘Don’t do this!’” he said. “We pleaded with the city for a referendum. A majority of the council said, ‘We don’t need to do that, because we know the citizens want it.’ And I’m going, ‘Excuse me? Because I can’t hear you over the voices of the 150 people who’ve turned out tonight to say we don’t.’”
While I don’t know if 150 voiced their opinions against the project, twenty certainly did and with the Anderson Builders backing out and now talks with the Hilton hotel franchise have fallen through, it looks more and more like Kautz’ baby is falling further and further into the sinkhole that she has created to make a name for herself.
Perhaps if she would spend less time concerning herself with the Republican National Convention and instead with the problems her fucking pet project is causing Burnsville and Dakota County taxpayers, maybe everyone would be a bit better off.
Are you a Burnsville voter? If so, please share with us your feelings on the Heart of the City debacle and the mayoral race. If you aren’t interested in discussing it publicly, please make sure that you at least get out and vote in the primary elections on September 9th!

I am not a B-ville resident but used to live there and never understood why they felt building all of those townhomes, etc made sense. I definitely do not understand this whole Heart of the City project either. What’s there to attract tourists to Burnsville over any other suburb? I like Burnsville enough, I just wouldn’t go out of my way to visit there. I just think it’s silly. Sorry. :(

There are really so many other things that I would rather see the city do than work on “Heart of the City”.
I dont hate the idea, I just dont think that creating a downtown from scratch is really a build it and they will come type of thing, and it appears I am correct. There is still no cornerstone restraunt in the corner of that big apartment across from the park. Hilton turned them down, etc. I think that a Water Feature Park about 4 times the size of the one they have created, with an outdoor venue for small concerts with an adjacent community center/pool would have been a MUCH better use of that space than a PAC that only a few snobs want, and the vast majority will never use.
I love the park they built, with the exception of the size. If they would have truly built a wonderful urban/suburban park, I think people would flock to the area.
There are dozens of other things I would love to see happen, first among them, Noise Barriers along 35E/35W.
Just my 2 cents, but I have only been in Burnsville for about 3 years, and I just dont see where much of what they have done with Heart of the City has helped me. Maybe in 10 years, it will be a different story and I am just short sighted?
