According to this article via the Pioneer Press, Jamie Eugene B. Dalton was sentenced to ten years in prison for his part in a Minnesota/Arizona marijuana trafficking operation that netted 350 lbs of dope, the largest ever in Dakota County.
Apparently this was in excess of state sentencing guidelines because of the large amount of pot involved. Now, I believe that when people do something illegal that they should be punished but 10 fucking years for 350 lbs of pot? Please.
Just for reference the minimum for 2nd or 3rd degree murder is also 10 years. Should we really be prosecuting dope smugglers the same as we would for murderers? There’s an “interesting” although fairly biased discussion about this happening over at Topix.
What do you think? Should taxpayers shoulder the burden that a 10 year sentence requires for marijuana trafficking or should the sentence been more in line with what a usual drug trafficking sentence requires (i.e. not as long as a murder conviction)?

The worst part of all of this is that the state agency hosting the sentencing guidelines is doing so in Word format instead of something that makes sense like PDF.
Shame on them.

I agree with you, it’s stupid to put a weed dealer in jail this long.
I think harder stuff they may find a correlation with violent crime or whatever for justifying sentencing…

What a waste of taxpayer dollars! And what a waste of a life. Ten years in prison for something that harmed no one. There is no way that drug trafficking should garner sentences similar to murder.
